Its an os that runs on cheap x86 hardware.  Its Amiga OS clone and runs re-compiled amiga software. So is not binary comptabile.

No, you can't. You will need UAE like on Windows.

There is a version EUAE for AROS though and somebody is working on making it sorta of intergrated into the OS

UAE integration is nearing completion so you will be able to run most of your games seamlessly once you have UAE setup properly in the not too distant future.

+1

For the most to the point neutral AROS description I've seen.

@carvedeye

It's a nice open source effort, and you can download the VM edition from the Icaros homepage to try it out under windows.

@ arnljot

Except he failed to mention it also runs on SAM440 (some what on EFIKA) and shortly ARM.

Hi. AROS is a open source effort to bring the beloved AmigaOS philosophy and structure to modern platforms, providing a clone of it that runs natively on new and cheap hardware. This means, however, that programs must be recompiled from their sources to be binary compatible with current processors. In order to run old games, you need an emulator instead, a virtual machines which provided both the OS (or at least the kickstart and original ROMs) and the hardware emulation, which AROS doesn't provide. You can run UAE or EUAE on AROS to play old games, as like as on any other operating system, the advantage to do it in AROS is that you get the same familiar environment also outside the virtual machine. If you want to try AROS in its current shape I suggest you to download Icaros Desktop Live! or Light, and try to run it natively on your computer. Check the http://www.icarosdesktop.org (http://www.icarosdesktop.org/) website for more informations and download options.
