Title: Where the devil can i get these brackets from?
Post by: CU_AMiGA on November 03, 2003, 12:17:00 PM
Hello!

I was cleaning and dusting my Amiga 1200 the other day and i noticed that a few cables were hanging out of the back of Amiga through the slots at the back of my Power Tower, these cables being the Silver Surfer Cable and the Blizzardvision cable. I remember thinking to myself at the time "well #### me! This Amiga looks like a complete and utter ####ing mess! I better ####ing do something about it quick! Before the whole thing ####ing blows up like a ####ing time bomb! Then i would be completely in the ####!"

I hope that everyone knows what i mean. I am not too good at describing stuff, but hopefully everyone knows what i mean, if not then i am doomed! :-(

Regards,

Do you type the swear words and wait for them to be censored, or do you type lots of #s?

You mean PCI blanking plates? You could buy an ancient PC (or get one from a skip) and harvest them from there, i guess.

@ CU_AMiGA

You're not a Derek and Clive fan, perchance?

Yes! You've got the point! :-) But i can't seem to find any. :-( Are there any poeple that would kindly have any spares for me to buy off them or point me in the right direction as in websites. I guess another alternative is to look in boot sales or computer stores/shops.

@CU_AMiGA

IIRC, DoomMaster has helped in the past, 3M or Matsushita (don't recall well) in the development of that brakets.

Ciao

Thanks for that, but where do i get these from? I am pretty desperate for these, as my tower looks like a complete mess at the moment.

One suggestion-

Put an add in your local classifies (Newspaper or Trading Post) offering to take obsolete PCs off ppls hands for disposal!
When the first usable case/machine appears, say "thanks", retrieve the TANGS, and any other usable parts, . . . .
What you do with the rest is up to you! ;-)

If you mean these blanking plates(http://64.95.118.51/images/opti/87/32/217263-elec_lg-resized80.jpg)

Then There are loads of them in the technical department where I work.

If someone came in asking for one, I would give them half a dozen for free. They are just lying around.

Just check at you local PC builder, I'm sure they should have a few spare. At most they might ask for a few pence.

It would be cool if we could configure xoops to insert geeky/stupid words like "jeepers" or "crikey" when filtering out swearwords :-)

"zoicks!"

Anyone with a few PHP skills could make a hack to do exactly that. (If it hasn't already been done before)

Afterall where it is told to insert '#' signs you should be able to tell it to insert random words from a  list.

Like Gazoinks!!!
Or
"Billions of Blistering Barnacles!! :madashell:

It would be realy hilarious ! :roflmao:

Nah!

I know it wouldn't be that great in reality, it was only supposed to be a 'tongue in cheek' suggestion. :-P

Hey, thinking about it, why wasn't your subject line:
"Where the #### can i get these brackets from?"?

I got some from PC World ( I just like going there to ask stupid questions to the spotty geeks that work there..honest guv). Have a wonder over to their "Component Center", they`ll be amongst the fan grills and PSUs.

If they don`t have any, have a look in your local Maplins. Whatever you do, don`t try and phone an order in, it`ll take you hours and then they`ll say " Sorry Sir, I can`t find any item matching that code" even thought it`s in their blinkyflipping catalogue.

Cos that would have sounded a bit rude!

@Doobrey

Thanks, i will try that. I have a local PC World, but not a local Maplin. I will look on their web site.

Well i searched my local PC World, Titan Computers and other little shops but couldn't find the ones i want. Not the ones that my Blizzardvision VGA socket and Silbver Surfer socket will fit into! :-(

Anyone on the org have any for spare!?

Are you any good with a Dremel?

Why not make up some custom ones from ordinary blanking plates?

Mmmmm
VGA and 9-pin serial havethe same size, so it should be good
enough if you find one belonging to an old muti-IO-card with
space for 2 9-pin-serial ports.

Got a bunch of them flying around, but I doubt that they would be
worth P&P .....

Can you give me the specs of the holes, I have a pile of backplanes here from onlder AT's I'm sure something would work for you. You pay the postage, and they're yours for nothing.  :-D

Hello Jagabot!

That's a very generous offer. Thank you. :-)
I am useless a technical stuff. So i will describe them.

I need 2 blanking plates with holes in, at different sizes. The hole on the first blanking plate must be the size of a VGA socket, so the Blizzardvision socket can fit through on and screw in place. The hole in the second blanking plate must be the same size as the Amiga serial cable socket, which is the same size as the Silver Surfer one incidently, this must also screw into place as well. Speaking of would you happen to have 2 screws for the Silver Surfer socket, so it can screw into place.

I hope that you know what i mean, thanks again.

So it is one hole for SUB-D-9 (same as SUB-D15) and one for SUB-D-25.

Or in other words:
1 9-pin serial + 1 25-pin serial or parallel.

Unbelieveable that these shoul be so hard to find  :-o

edit:
took me 15 secs to find one  :-P

Yeah! Its probably just me! I seem to have to do stuff the hard way! :-(

Best way:
Search a flea-market orsimilar for an old ISA-IO-card
(or even VESA-local-bus).

These should have 1 parallel, 2 serial and 1 gameport, with either the
2 serial or 1 serial and the gameport connected via ribbon-cable
to a 2nd bracket. Most cards have 1 serial in 25pin and the 2nd in 9 pin,
leading to a situation where either the bracket on the card or the 2nd
one would fit your needs (allways the one without the gameport).

But i only need the blanking plates. I don't really want to be lumbered with a graphics card or something. Plus it is more money that i am already paying.

I assume you mean the screws that allow your monitor cable etc to screw into them? Sure, no problem I have the exact plate you want, and I'll toss a couple of the screws in (or do you need all 4?). Where does this thing go (ie: your shipping address)  :)

@jagabot

Yes! That is exactly what i need! Well done! As for the screws i was meaning the 2 for the Silver Surfer Serial socket, as i already have screws for the Blizzardvision VGA socket. But that doesn't matter, you can send me all 4 of the screws, just incase it doesn't go according to plan. I will PMail/ email you my address. Thanks again.
