Title: Battery acid damage, A500 512k expansion
Post by: mikeymike on August 28, 2009, 09:57:43 PM
I got my A500 out of storage.  I was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't any damage to the side of the board I could see.  Switch it on, caps lock light went on/off, power light flickered, then nothing.

I switched off the expansion, it booted (well, didn't check for the kickstart screen, but it sounded happy).

I pulled out the expansion, turned it over to see some battery fluffyness, but the main thing IMO is that the circuit pathways to (particularly) one chip have changed colour, so I assume that won't work any more.  I'll take a picture once my wife finds the camera.

Had exactly the same here happen a while back and never managed to fix the expansion.

Cleaned it up, all the tracks appeard OK, but it was dead.  Infact i finally binned the expansion yesterday.

They're usually all over eBay for not a whole lot of money.

..but who knows what's under that cover.

I'd shop around for one with a nice clean shot of the board and lack of battery damage.  Seems like every one I come across has acid eating away at it.
