The new slim has removed the Linux support feature from what I understand, so does this mean now Amiga OS for the PS3 either?

Where did you ever get the illusion that Amiga OS was in development for PS3?
-
Personally, having linux install on a PS3 defies the whole point of a "play"station. I guess the majority of the people out there want a PS3 for just one reason ... play, and not to experiment with it!? However I am intrested to know why a linux may be needed on a play station :) or AmigaOS ... always open for new ideas :)

He probably got it from the article on ARS Technia by OS4 advocate and wannabe journalist Jeremy Reimer where he claims it is being tested on PS3:

"A Hyperion developer told me that not only has the OS been run on a PS3, but they have even tested support for the seven SPU units in the Cell processor. "

With Linux on the PS3 you can play all of your favorite emulators (nes, snes, mame). You can also rip blu-rays and play video formats not supported by XMB.
UAE on the PS3 is a bit of a disappointment though.

ROFL. Right on. There's one person who does nothing but plagiarize other people's work and fancies himself on writing OS4 articles, pretending to be an expert lol.
Back to the topic, absolutely no Amiga OS for PS3, not now, not in the past, not in the future.

I thought this was a rumor/movement from when Amigans were desperate for hardware.

:lol::lol::lol:
I have to be honest in saying when I first read that article I thought it was some form of elaborate troll.
Even if it isn't, the fact that people believe it (and in some relatively recent threads actually cited it) just makes it all the more hilarious.

Amigans have been desperate for hardware for the past 15 years haven't they?
:)
Anyway, no...there was never much chance of OS4 coming out on a PS3 or XBOX 360 or Wii or Mac or PC (ok, I'll stop now).
;)

Hopefully the non PS3 Slim will not loose it's install alternate OS feature with the 3.0 firmware upgrade.
-
Since they are announcing the PS3 Slim to be a more power-efficient version of the PS3, I'd suspect that they left out more than the Alternate OS firmware. They probably scrubbed the whole da*n hypervisor just to save a few gates in the die shrink of the CellBE processor and graphics chips.

Even if this were true (and it may well be), it doesn't mean they are/were going to release it. Just because something is technically possible, doesn't make it good business sense to market it.

What I can not understand is this; Does this mean it will be impossible to install linux for PS3? I mean if a Linux distribution is developed to work on a PS3 (I think YellowDog do that stuff) then will it be impossible for me to install it? What will stop me?

Also, what about self booting Linux DVD's. Will they still work on a PS3 Slim?

It appears I was a victim of dis-information. Sighhh...

Don't worry about it, in fact think of it this way: You didn't end up getting hoodwinked out of your cash for the privilage of finding out...
