Title: A few SAM440 AmigaOS config questions
Post by: blakespot on August 11, 2009, 02:56:34 PM
So I got the SAM up and running with 4.1.  A few things.

How can I tell if SWAP: is actually mounted?  It's not listed with 'info' and I did not actually format the partition when formatting the other two -- I don't think I saw it in the list.

Does AmigaOS include the capability to mount .ADFs as virtual floppies?  Wondering what's the best way to install Deluxe Paint V and some of the apps that came with my Amiga 1200 (PPaint, etc.) on the SAM - they're all on physical floppies.

Is DVPlayer supposed to play DVDs?  I throw a DVD in and tell DVPlayer to open a DVD and it just hangs, saying "Opening DVD Menu..." - frozen.  This is the one that's bundled w/ OS4.1.

Thanks.

Open RAMDISK: you should see the size is 3GB if you have set it up right (with 2GB).

Not sure on your second question.

DVD should work fine, I cant remember now, was there a problem with sound not working. Or was that CDPlayer, ?

There is software on OS4depot that lets you use ADFs and even Mac-DMG-files as if they were ordinary devices. It is called "diskimage device".

You need to install (an) additional codec(s) to use DVPlayer for DVD playback. I installeed a52_avcodec.lha and dca_avcodec.lha from os4depot.

Oh, and well - I had no luck running Deluxe Paint (V or III) on Samantha :-(
Personal Paint runs great though. Maybe you could run DPaint through UAE. There is a new bounty to create a GUI for UAE-settings on OS4.

Ah, cool.  I guess I need to get pretty acquainted with OS4depot.

My A1200 '060 is on the LAN, as is the SAM, so should be good to image the disks on the 1200 and transfer to the SAM.  I should setup PARnet between that 1200 and my 2000, to allow some back and forth there.  (I used to have a Zip drive on my 2000, and would sneaker-net it from my G4 Mac (with Zip), but I have that tower away...)

Hmm.  I setup something like 3.6GB of swap.  I open RAM: and it has 4096B used.  Bytes...

Did I need to actually format the SWAP: partition?

I have a 2.0GB swap partition. I can see it in media toolbox but I've no idea if it is actually working. I guess I need to shove a big file in RAM:, that ought to answer the question :)

One thing worth checking is whether or not the swap partition has the right layout. In media toolbox, check that it has 4KB blocksize, has the SWAP filesystem and has the device name SWAP.

That said, mine checks out but I still can't tell if it is enabled or not.

Its working then, cause I default it to 2GB and it shows me 3GB (2 for SWAP and 1 for actual RAM).

If your machines are networked then why not install the applications on the A1200 and take note of any assigns written or any extra libraries installed...

What I would do with anything extra is make directories in the (for example) DPaint program dir; libs l c etc whatever is extra and put it all inside before arcing it up with lzx or later tar then bz2 whatever... you'll probably want to use lha...

then ftp the file across and unlha it on the SAM... move or copy (which would be easier) the files to the corresponding SAM sys directories or assign the extra files/libraries/commands prior to launching the Application...

Than transfer disk images and then mount them?

I know a bit of this may seem strange but that's what you get when you spend twenty something years with AmigaDOS ;-)

good luck!

p.s. there is an ftp program on OSDepot that is rather easier to set up on the SAM... then just use your fav ftp program to connect with the SAM...

If you can get hold of a copy of Envoy, you can actually mount your A1200s floppy drive over the network as if it was a local drive.

I have a utility on my a1200 desktop tht can mount adfs as if it were the real disk. I used it to install games that were problematic with whdload and used the original installer with this app. Also for installing old diskmags like grapevine. It works perfectly, the only drawback is that disks that were no readable in workbench(some ndos disks from games) don't work.
I downloaded it fom aminet and among adf it could manage several disk formats, including the rare sinclair QL. I will look to see the name of the app and list it here, because already i don't remember its name.
