Title: SD card, Amiga 600?
Post by: circlip on August 05, 2009, 05:16:35 AM
Hi all,

I have an Extreme III photofast SDHC card, and IDE to SD adapter. The adapter can take up to 32Gb, I have a 4Gb. I also have a 2Gb SD (not SDHC) card, if the photofast won't go.

I am wondering, what tools can I use to make the card work? I have tried the tools with WB2.1 and also HDInsttools. HDInsttools says it is a CF card, and the options are greyed out, and automatic install did not work.

I have also tried cfd.lha from someone elses post, and loaded "CF0" but it seemed to still not show up in any tools. Do I have to load specific drivers? (and as a relative newbie, I don't know how to do this)

I have winUAE, Amiga Explorer (I know how to use both) a IDE to SD adapter, a USB to SD card adapter, and of course Windows.

Iam thinking about HDToolBox, try and read the config of the harddrive (SD card) and define a harddrive in HDToolBox.

Load HDToolbox.

Click on "Change Drive Type" to continue. Note: HDToolBox (and most of the Amiga system) will refer to a hard drive as a SCSI device, even though in this case it's IDE.

The Amiga has to be told about the drive's parameters, so click on "Define New...". A list of drive parameters will be shown, initially filled in with default values that do not relate to the drive you've installed. To read the correct parameters from the drive, click on the "Read Configuration" button. HDToolBox will tell you what it's about to do. Click on "Continue" to proceed. Check that the drive parameters (and mainly the drive's size) are correctly reported. Note that drives larger than 4Gb will give incorrect size values but can still be used in most cases. Change the "Filename" entry from "drive definitions" to "Ram:junk".This stops HDToolBox from writing the drive's parameters back to the Install disk as they are not required from here on.

Click on the "OK" button to continue. Your drive will now be listed properly, so click "OK" again. Default partitions will now be shown. It is suggested that these are removed and your own partitions created. To do this, click on the shaded area on the right-hand side, representing one of the default partitions. Click on "Delete Partition" to remove the default partition. Click and drag the blue triangle to adjust the primary partition size. Workbench doesn't take up much room, so 10Mb to 20Mb is a fair size for this partition, and is very manageable.

Change the partition name to "DH0" - this is a good choice as some very early Amiga software may refer to this name explicitly. Ensure the "Bootable" gadget is ticked before continuing. Now click on "New Partition" to define the secondary partition. Click on the right-hand unused area. The maximum partition size for a standard Amiga using the standard file system is 2Gb (2048Mb). If your secondary partition is larger than this, click and drag the blue triangle to adjust it downwards Note: failure to do this may cause file system corruption and/or loss of data later on! Edit the partition name - "DH1" is suggested - and ensure the "Bootable" gadget is not ticked.

Click on "OK" to proceed. To commit your changes to the hard drive, click on "Save Changes to Drive" then click on "Exit"

Reboot your Amiga (to allow Workbench to recognize the new partitions) - leave the Workbench disk in the drive and wait for the Amiga to load.

You should see two further disk icons stating "DHx:NDOS" or "DHx:" followed by some random characters. This will vary depending on what was stored on the drive before it was placed in your Amiga.

Format both of your newly created drives as outlined in your manual.

Thanks guys, will have to try it out. The Miggy is packed now as we're moving house, so I will have to wait until we get there!
