Title: Recommended joystick?
Post by: hayashi on August 03, 2009, 02:43:10 PM
Hi,

My QuickShot joystick works fine, but feels a bit cheap and clunky at times, and the other working joystick I have for 2-player (Cheetah 125) is somewhat stiff. Does anyone have any recommendations for Amiga joysticks that are easy to use (ie not too stiff) and feel comfortable (as opposed to feeling like a light, cheaply made piece of plastic)?

I like the Wico Command Control and Boss joysticks.  The CD32 control pad is pretty good as well.

I have been using Competition Pro joysticks for years (after trying many other types).  Brand new ones are a little stiff but slacken off nicely with time.  I can't see past Comp Pro's (as long as they are the full sized ones and not the micro ones).  Don't think you can get them brand new any more but good condition second hand ones should not be very stiff and maybe worth a shot.

The Konix Speedking (or Epyx 500XJ in the USA) are the dogs wotsits.

Virtually indestructible, fully microswitched with brilliant ergonomics ... an all-rounder in the retro video game industry.

I wish they still made these :)

Second place here goes to the Quickshot (QS-162) originally designed and released for the Sega Mega-drive.

Hmm, I have a QuickShot on my A1200 right now, and it feels a bit meh to me. Maybe it's just because I've been brought up with modern console gamepads and whatnot, so my standards are ridiculously high or something >_<

When my friends and I started out in 1985 we were quite fond of the QuickShot II it was more solid and durable than the QuickShot II Turbo even though it didn´t have microswitches. We tried a lot of other sticks, but werent satisfied.

One of us bought a Competition Pro 5000 and we did´t look back. Within months we didn´t use any other joystick anymore. While the Competitions were affordable and easily repaired, they felt like a quality product. I still own two of the originals and two of the more recent Speedlink-USB-variants. While the latter needed them opened and "repaired" (i.e. tighten the screws on the microswitches) the old ones have been in constant use for years and are still practically in their original condition.

The one I like best is still a model with a rubber instead of a spring, which makes operation somewhat smoother. Also it has no microswitches for the fire-buttons, which is an advanage, as the mechanics are less likely to jam.

The Competition Pro mini is workable, but less desirable than the full-size versions.

I have not tried Wico or Konix more than once, but found it hard to adapt to their feel. In the end your personal experience makes a huge difference. When you are young your habbits are sort of programmed. Its hard to get rid of them. Maybe this is the readon we still use Amigas?

Though I hear these are good, if not expensive:

This is the best joystick.

I have one, but I've never tried it.  It must be the best, however, because it's the heaviest joystick I've ever encountered.  Like someone ripped a chunk out of an arcade machine.

Nice joystick.

Looks like someone threw-up some white stuff on your carpet there right below the joystick though -.  ;-)

Oh, that's not my pic.  My joystick that matches that one is buried in the garage somewhere, so I googled for that pic.

We will have more new Competition Pro Retro joysticks in stock within approximately a month.

-edit-
BTW, if you have a specific used joystick request, let me know! I have box after box of joysticks, many different types!

TAC 2 are my favorite, with the Comp. Pro being a real close 2nd. The TAC 2 has no switches, in the traditional sense, so there's nothing to break! Great idea!

World's best 1-button joystick is without a doubt the Ergostick.  Reliable, accurate, ergonomical and covered with this soft rubbery substance for fantastic grip with no slipping and no blisters.

Ergosticks have been my main joystick since 1989.

I was honestly quite shocked when Amigakit paid top $$$ to remanufacture those pedestrian antiquated new Competition Pro joysticks that they are offering.  Why not make a new production run of Ergosticks?

Competition pro only. Full sized ones, not the mini ones. :-)
