Title: A4000 and GVP scsi
Post by: Gaeokerena on October 31, 2003, 06:17:41 PM
PLEEEEEEESEEE HELP ME!!!!!!

I have just installed a GVP HC+8 Scsi II card in my 4000 and the fastest transfer I can get is 700k/s, while the IDE goes up to 2.5mb/s

How can I get the card to go full speed

My system

A4000 desktop with 3640 rev3.1
Cybervision 64
Buster 11
IDE Hard drive and Zip Drive

700k/s doesn't sound that bad for the HC+8. Remember, the card is a ZorroII/16bit card and just isn't very fast.  I think I've seen benchmarks showing slightly over 1M/s but nothing more.  (and, that might have been the result of a GuruROM)

My old a2000hd (no, not military grade  :-) ) managed to reach 1.2mb, so i think 700kb is a bit slow

btw my 2000 died because of battery leakage, a tip for everyone to check their batteries  :-o

Are there slots for RAM on the card? Adding RAM there can help. It'll probably need GVP SIMMs though, and those are rare and expensive.

I stand corrected.   I thought the Zorro II bus limit was less than it is (a little over 3.5M/s).

However, a quick search reminded me of the Zorro II DMA problem with certain versions of the A3640 (rev 3.1 and before).  The GuruROM documenation mentions this also.  I'd look here first.

I meant to look into the A3640 DMA problem first.   Sorry, my post didn't make much sense.  If you want to upgrade to a Guru ROM, they still show at www.softhut.com.  But, I think it won't help your problem.  I'd suggest upgrading your A3640 to rev3.2

Hey folks, a bit off the original topic but reguarding the A3640. I am toying with the idea of fitting my A3000 with my dead 4000's A3640 rev3.1. (lacks the LARGE heatsink) How hard is this really. I think Im in the clear because its a rev.3.1. And what should I fear with heat issues?

I thought the DMA problem was eleviated with rev.3.1 + anyhow..am I correct on this?

@Gaeokerena:

What kind of SCSI-drives have you used when measuring the speed?

The story is simple:

The GVP-SCSI (just like the A2091) is a Z2-DMA-card, and can therefore
only do DMA to the 1st 16mb address-space. The only RAM you will find
in there on an A3000/4000 is the chip-mem (or RAM on Z2-cards).

Everything outside will cause an error and a switchback to PIO.

It will fit physically, but it mightl run a bit hot.  I'd watch the temps and see if they seem too high, and add a fan if needed (you might be able to find a 486 fan/heatsink that will fit under the drives).

According to the Big Book of Amiga Hardware rev 3.1 has the Z2-DMA bug.
