I understand that the internal A1200 IDE can support two devices without additional hardware. I therfore looked for a cable which would allow this and came across:

If I plugged this into the A1200 header, and attached a normal 3.5" IDE cable to it, and use a Hard Drive and CD ROM? I guess I wouldn't have to attach the included power cable to anything.
My A1200 is in a DIY tower. I know that with the internal header, a shorter cable is better. I currently use an HD off the internal header and the CD off an Alfa Data A1200 (PCMCIA) adapter, but want to free that up for a 3-COM network card which I have tested and confirmed works in my Amiga.
Thank you.

It will work without any problems, but the piece where the power lines are mounted might get in the way of actually mounting it on the IDE header on the A1200. You can trim it off though, and it will the fit. This one (http://cgi.ebay.com/2-5-to-3-5-IDE-Hard-Disk-Converter-Adapter-Power-Cable_W0QQitemZ250475939452QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCA_Cables_Adapters?hash=item3a5187867c&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14) fits without any problems.
And you are correct, the power connector must not be connected.
