Finally got around to hooking my Casio CDP-100 up to one of my Amiga's via MIDI.
I've got Deluxe Music Construction Set (which crashes every time I try to "notate"
from the Casio btw) and Bars & Pipes 2.5. It does not appear I can simply load a .mid
file from the internet into either of these programs, which is what I was hoping to do
so I could learn to play certain songs easier.
Since neither of these programs want to deal with .mid (or .midi for that matter) files,
it would still be nice to hear these files played through my keyboard.
Is there an OS1.3 or OS3.1 friendly MIDI playback program? A quick search for MIDI
on Aminet revealed too many MIDI-esque programs. And the few I checked out all seemed to need
an 020 or better. The MIDI files I'd like to pipe through to my keyboard are only about
30-50kb in size, so it's not like I'm asking too much out of my computer, am I? lol
-
Did you try the MIDI datatype (http://aminet.net/package/util/dtype/MidiDT)? I've had good luck with that on my 4000T and under WinUAE.
DeluxeMusic 2.0 should be able to open MIDI files directly.
-
Thanks Matt_H, I download the datatype and the camd.library (realtime.library is part of OS3.1). Still can't get .mid files to play. But... even if I did, the other programs still wouldn't know what to do with them. I don't simply want to play a MIDI file on my Amiga using Paula... I want to have it play through the MIDI box and into my Casio digital piano. I'll see if I can "track" down (pun intended) that Deluxe Music 2.0 program later. Version 1.0 definitely doesn't know what to do with them.
-
That's what the MIDI datatype does - plays through a CAMD device. I assume your MIDI box is hooked up to the serial port, but did you remember to use CAMD's MidiPrefs to enable it?
I'm not aware of any way of playing MIDI through Paula, other than GMPlay, which is incompatible with CAMD stuff.
-
Oh, I've got to take a closer look at this then. Off Aminet, the camd.lha file does not
have a camd.device or a program that lets me set prefs of any kind. Just camd.library.
There is a Midiports icon though... is that what you are referring to?
Oh and yes, MIDI box is hooked through the serial port...
-
A CAMD setup should consist of camd.library, realtime.library, Devs:MIDI, and MidiPorts.
Create the directory Devs:MIDI (no problem if it's empty). Drag MidiPorts to Sys:Prefs and run it. Move the internal serial driver to the enable column, save, and you should be all set.
Open a MIDI file with multiview and it should use your MIDI box for playback.
-
Great, she seems to work now - thanks a million!! Had to enable the serial port
was my problem and didn't know Multiview was the gateway :-)
Do I need to change the serial prefs at all? Baud rate and all that good stuff?
There's one MIDI file that crashes my computer, but the others seem fine.
So there's no program available to play .mid files with all their instruments for
the Amiga?
-
Great! Glad you're operational.
I never adjusted the serial port prefs. Don't know if I should have. Matching what the external box expects probably wouldn't hurt.
There are plenty of MIDI players (just browse aminet mus/midi or search for midi or camd), but I haven't found one that I like other than the straightforward simplicity of Multiview and the MIDI datatype. There's also, as I said, DMusic 2.
Opening a file directly in B&P is probably possible, but I haven't figured out how. Maybe if I get around to reading the manual...
-
There is a Bars and Pipes tool on Aminet for loading MIDI standard files (search for SMF). Also I recommend Black5 SMF player. No need for MIDI datatype or Multiview. It just interprets them in the raw and sends it to your internal serial port.

In my search for these files on Aminet, I discovered Midiplay. That's just what the doctor
ordered for playing back these files on a 68k based A500. I was happy with Multiview at
first, but found MOST of my midi files would not play back. In fact, they'd cause the
program to crash. I even upped the stack size, etc. Midiplay rocks.
Haven't been able to find the plug-in or tool off Aminet yet re: Bars and Pipes and Aminet
doesn't seem to know what Black5 is either. Outside of digitising sounds, real music done
on the Amiga is new to me.
Would like to play around with Deluxe Music 2.0 if anyone wants to sell a copy...
-
I couldn't find those tools either.
DMusic is legally available (http://www.exotica.org.uk/mirrors/ami_sector_one/deluxemusic.htm), however.
-
Thanks once again Matt! Good 'ol ami_sector_one :-)
-
Sounds like you are going to play them through your keyboard which is probably the best route.
Brings back memories though. I used to play all my MIDI files through Paula. It might have been the GMPlay program on Aminet, but I can't remember.
I know it came with tons samples for all the standard MIDI isntruments. You could change them around to make the MIDI file sound how you wanted.
It was a great way to listen to MIDI's I remember that. This was long before AHI or anything like that. Pretty sure it was my A1200 and I must have had the 030.
Have to go play with this!!
-
Yeah, I'm having a blast with this stuff. Thanks for the info. I've got a music room of sorts and
now the Amiga is officially part of it! lol Midi sounds soooo professional through my keyboard,
but as nice as my Casio is (hammered & pressure sensitive keys, Grand, Baby Grand, strings,
harpsichord, electric piano, etc.), it's not a full fledged synthesiser. Very limited in what
instruments it plays.
Have it hooked through a Peavy amp with a nice set of speakers. Can easily play my
drums to the music and I love not having to contend with the sound of studio percussion,
vocals, etc.
-
Sorry you couldn't find these files.
If you are interested in an efficient Shell player then search Aminet for B5MIDI.
The Bars`n`Pipes tool is actually an accessory (sorry my bad). It is on Alfred's site http://www.hansfaust.de/barsnpipes/download/sMerFF3_3.lha

I always liked Dr. T's TigerCub for midi on Amigas...I also had their more powerful version of it but cant remember the name! :)
-
Okay, so I downloaded and installed Deluxe Music 2.0, but cannot get the MIDI function to work. Set it to 'active', but no sound. Is there a midi.device I'm missing that needs to be put in the Devs:Midi drawer? I notice when you install DM, it asks what kind of Midi device you have out of ONLY 2 choices. I've selected both and they both drop icons in Devs:Midi, but neither work.
My Midi device is a ECE box hooked through the serial port...

If you want to go to the next level, get a MIDI Sampler.
I have a Akai S3000XL and it works great with my OctaMED setup. You can get one now for about a £100 now so it`s cheaper than a Zorro sound card. It has stereo outs plus 8 individual outs, so if you put it through a desk you`ve got 10 channels to mix live. They were £1800 when they came out in 97.
See my previous posts. :)

See you got me haning on your music room wall :)

Indeed, I'm a HUGE Keith Moon fan and I like Animal just as well!
I won that little guy shooting cans at a 4H fair here in town a couple
years ago. Couldn't believe they had Animal! Decked out in the Pirates
theme for the Disney franchise, but still... :-)

You also need to set your instruments to a MIDI channel under "Set Instrument...", which I think is a separate window from the "MIDI Active" checkbox.
Think of Devs:Midi like Devs:Monitors or Devs:AHI. The contents don't do anything unless the correct hardware is present. So if I pull my CV3D card out of the machine, my CVision3D driver will still be "running", but as far as the screenmode database is concerned, it's not there.
There is no midi.device, just MIDI devices that go in Devs:Midi. If your box connects to the serial port, use the built-in serial driver. The Checkpoint and OneStopMusicShop drivers are analogous to CVision3D and Delfina.audio - if you don't have the hardware, they don't do anything.
