Title: cpu/fpu crystal socket

I have a most embarrassing problem where my crystal keeps falling out :confused:  . I have one of these new A1200 accelerators from GVP and they put a socket on the board for the clock crystal, usually a nice feature.

But in my case, pun intended, the accelerator's components all face down. And thus the thingy can and does fall out.

Has this ever happened to you? Right now, for a temp solution I have stolen some foam from some where - and used this to support the crystal.

I really don't like it when foam touches my crystal, I guess I could just take the socket out and soldier down the crystal and it would be rock solid.

Know any kind goop or good idea ?

I'd bend the pins of the crystal around a bit to make it harder for them to pull out.

If there's enough of a gap. use a zip tie around the socket/crystal.

Many years ago Eyetech used some silicon on mine. They put it over the top of the crystal and down the sides of the socket.  I had already tried slightly bending the pins but after a while the crystal still slid out, being as you say its face down.

Thanks guys - I have bent the pins, holds for awhile, but as Clint said, gravity has its way with the thing.

Hmm, I might have some ties long and skinny enough (automotive). or a insulated bread tie???

FYI - I did have some baby zip ties, and it worked perfectly, tucked under the socket and over the top, snipped the extra stuff off - it's not going anywhere and is all reliable now

if you are good with a soldering iron i say change the sockets for new ones remember their come in different pin sizes,or if your happy with the speed just solder them in.
