Finally got everything working on my A3000 then i notice i lost 3MB of ram then another 5MB. Guess its time to buy some new Zip ram chips, does anyone have 16MB worth? shipping to Sydney Australia.
Also i noticed underneath the Zip ram slots there are 8 Chip slots what are they for are they another type of ram i can put in and if so what part/model number are they?
And will it be better to get that type instead of the Zips
Thanks in Advance

Call or email softhut, they usually have zips.

Amiga.org member 1985BMWK75 also had some of this RAM recently, at a fair price.
edit: hey, and he's even in Australia as well. That should make for cheap shipping.

you can use use DIP RAM there for fast RAM but only as much as 2 mb. You should get ZIPs as I'm not sure if you can mix match them.

Fast RAM for Amiga 3000
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Via the U850D-U857D DIP package Bank 0 Sockets...
256Kbit x 4 20 pin DIP 80ns 8 1/1MByte
1Mbit x 4 20 pin DIP 80ns 8 1/4MBytes
Via the U850-U881 ZIP package Bank 0-3 Sockets...
256Kbit x 4 20 pin ZIP 80ns 8 4/4MBytes
1Mbit x 4 20 pin ZIP 80ns 8 4/16MBytes
These should all either be Static Column or Page Mode.
As noted above, some A3000's shipped with 1MByte of FAST memory in
DIP package, waiting to be transplanted into the sockets for CHIP RAM, once
more FAST RAM was installed. Those FAST memory sockets are the U850D-U857D
20 pin DIP places, Bank 0. This bank is electrically mapped to Bank 0
U850-U857, 20 pin ZIP sockets. As a result, one can make a three megabyte
A3000 configuration by putting 256Kbit x 4 chips into the FAST RAM DIP
sockets without buying ZIPs. Or a six meg setup, using 1MBit x 4 chips.
The DIP FAST sockets cannot be used with the ZIP sockets all together, as
the two Bank 0 areas are basically pinned to each other (as noted by the
same component numbers, one set with a D for DIP). One could have 4MBytes
of DIPs for FAST, then another 12MBytes of FAST in ZIPs placed into Banks
1-3, but not 4MBytes in the DIP area and 16MBytes in all four ZIP banks.
256Kbit and 1Mbit banks cannot be mixed. One cannot have 4MBytes of
1Mbit chips, and then 1MByte via another bank of 256Kbit chips. Of
course, one can't mix individual chips either! All four banks are either
low or high density banks.
Yeah i read that too 4MB in DIP and 12MB in ZIP.
But doesn't say part numbers will check my MB since i has 2MB CHIP ram but i have sent an email to software hut asking for prices for 16MB ZIP (dam my stupid zip chips i could be working on my A4000 by now) .
OH well the joys of owning an Amiga (i wish Clone-A, Natami or replay would be finished already)!
Here's a link I should've found earlier.
20-pin DIP DRAM memory chips
(8) 1meg x 4-bit dips make up a bank of 4mb.
An example would be Toshiba TC514400AP-60.
Other manufacturers might use the following base part numbers:
Fujitsu MB : 814400
Goldstar GM : 71C4400
Hitachi HM : 514400
Hyundai HY : 514400
Micron MT : 4C4001
Mitsubishi M5M: 44400
Alternatively, forget about ZIP RAM and grab a ZIP->SIMM converter. DJBase might have some available (http://www.amigaworld.de/hardware/simm-zip-ram-adapter/).
-
Thanks Mate i was looking into those convertors but didnt know who makes them, thanks heaps Matt
I think simm is slightly slower than zip memory, but maybe more cost effective. I never owned that simm adapter.
-
I'd think SIMMs of the same speed rating as the replaced ZIP chips (60ns, 70ns, etc) would be about the same speed-wise. (if both types were FPM, at least.)
-
well i will be ordering a convertor from DJ just waiting on finally price of fastest shipping. I have heaps of 72 pin ram lieing around including EDO stuff. and as for the speed decrease i wouldnt think it will be that much speed difference.
I found some Zip Ram for A2000 SCSI card from these guys.
All of the DRAMs in common Amiga sizes they list seem to be DIP or SOJ.
-
Thanks but i ordered one of JB's Zip -> Simm adapters that way i don't have to worry about Zip chips going bad again.
@ Retro_71
Can you post how much that ZIP to SIMM adapter costs? Also the postage/shipping charge.
I'm sure other people would be interested :) I know I am!
DIP chips or PS/2 SIMMs are no slower than standard (fast page) ZIPs - speed depends solely on the RAM controller RAMSEY, if the RAMs are too slow the machine will simply crash.
However, static column ZIPs can run slightly faster with the original '030 CPU (2-15%) as RAMSEY supports burst transfers in this configuration. Static column chips simply don't exist in DIP form or on PS/2 sticks.
With very fast DIP or PS/2 RAMs (not much more than 50ns) you can try to gain some extra speed: set J851 to 1-2 (16 MHz position). This removes the extra wait state that's usually required for 25 MHz operation with 80 ns RAMs.
You can just try if your 60ns RAMs are fast enough, nothing will break. If it crashes you'll have to switch back to the normal 25 MHZ setting. But do test your 3k thoroughly before running any real work on the machine. :hammer:
Has anyone heard of DJBase recently? I've ordered (and payed) the SIMM-ZIP adapter
from his site AmigaWorld (http://www.amigaworld.de/hardware/simm-zip-ram-adapter/) but he never replied on all of my emails after the payment was done. :(
The money transaction was on July 24 with SEPA IBAN/BIC, so I know that he did get the money within a few days because I payed like this before lots of times.
@Retro 71
Did you received your SIMM-ZIP adapter, or are you also still waiting? :confused:
-
Never mind, he contacted me yesterday. The SIMM-ZIP adapter is on it's way! :)
