Update on conversion :- Dudes! The conversion with the a1200 and the compaq desktop is coming along really well... but i have hit a flaw. I have done the actual case conversion, the mobo is ready to be screwed in, i have moved the PSU, angle grinded the case, mounted all the drives.. etc but the damm psu wont work unless there is a mobo attached to it (i thought this may happen).. Now i remember somewhere that there is a way to trick a PSU into thinking there is a motherboard on it.. Any ideas? Its one of the older PSU with the split mobo connecter on it. PS.. I have taken photos all the way through the conversion, so i will post them on a.org for you all to splender!

I'd like to see some pics of your Frankenstein.
'He's alive.....ALIVE!!!' :-D
-
No problem - once it is sprayed there will be a full series of before / after pics posted on my website. Damm it looks like a frankenstein at the moment, but it will look good :-)
-
Very easy.. connect PowerGood (usually orange) with +12v (usually yellow), that's it. :-D
-
Any of the +12V??
What should i get when i measure PowerGood with a multimeter? (So i know i have the correct wire :-)
-
The following links will probably provide you with all you need.
ATXspec (http://www.compute-aid.com/atxspec.html)
And from the Aminet Hardware Hack:
Readme File (http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/aminet/info/www/dirs/aminet/hard/hack/atx_psu.readme)
ATX_psu.lha (http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/pub/aminet/info/www/dirs/aminet/hard/hack/atx_psu.lha)
-
Connect up hard disc, floppy, cdrom to the power connectors, this should be more than enough load to power up the psu with out the mobo attached.
-
Hmm its an AT psu...
-
Yeah ill try that later :-)
cheers chaps

Ooops!
Ok try these sites:
http://members.iweb.net.au/~pstorr/pcbook/book5/power.htm (http://members.iweb.net.au/~pstorr/pcbook/book5/power.htm)
http://www.amiga-seal.freeserve.co.uk/aos/TOWER.HTM (http://www.amiga-seal.freeserve.co.uk/aos/TOWER.HTM)
BTW I hope its not the A1200 tower that you are kicking in your Avatar :-D :-P
-
Nope its an AMD K6-2 450 to be exact.
-
Aah!
The joys of non-standard power supplies.
Well the Info you require is probably in one of these Compaq technical manuals on this FTP site:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformation/techpubs/maintenance_guides/
Too many documents to search through though. It would probably take ages to find.
So I suggest you wait until someone else comes up with a better answer. :-)

Hmm its ok i have lots of PSU - i think either JC's fix or the one with the PowerGood is going to fix it - after all its just a standard PSU looking at it. The wires seem the same as the one on one of the above websites.
-
If it's a standard AT psu (then one of the cables going to the motherboard will have the color combination orange PwrGd, red +5V, yellow +12V, blue -12V, black Gnd, black Gnd) just wire up the PowerGood with any of the +12V whires. I've done that like on 4 AT PSU's by now and so far everyone have worked like a charm. If you can't find an orange line then it doesn't follow the AT standard but you can just open the PSU and look at it's board cause they usually mark it on there aswell (PG, PwG, PwrGd or simular). :-D
-
Cheers mate - will try this later.

What !???
PSUs have lethal voltages inside :-o
Don't do anythin silly man.
Safety first. :-x
-
The electricity doesn't really live in the box, it comes there via the cord... ;-)
-
@ CF, dude tis ok
i have openend many PSU in my time :-)
Always lick the coil before you touch it. That way you drain the voltage.
Heh Heh
BY THE WAY. THATS A JOKE. PLEASE DONT TRY IT AT HOME

Change your name to GoogleMastah !
or you could try gettin a life :-D :-P

I appriciate the help :-p
-
10 points to JCamper - putting load on (connecting drives) kicked the PSU into life. Well Done :-)
Time for the mobo...
