Title: Amiga CD32 NTSC & PAL?
Post by: Guille64 on July 14, 2009, 08:53:16 PM
Hello,

My Amiga CD32 is NTSC based. Most of the games works good but some games experienced lack of red problem. I've tryied to start with the mouse and the menu changed to PAL, and the result was the same. Is the game itself who changed to some kind of hybrid between NTSC and PAL that my television/monitor didn't recognize?

Regards,

Haven't really experienced your particular problem. All colours are usually way off and/or you end up cropping 1/4 of the picture with incompatible standards.

Does adjusting the tint/hue on your tele or monitor help at all?

Is bad color a common problem of CD32's?

Well, hello again!
I have now a new CD32 but this time I choose a PAL one.
All I have to say is that all problems with colours are solved now and all games that didn't run in the NTSC work in this one.
I guess that most of the games did for CD32 were done for the european market in which the CD32 worked well. But the USA market never received the NTSC ones did in 1994 due to the problems in Commodore and the upcoming fall.

Regards

I don't know if this is the issue but...

The hybrid mode your talk about may be that the PAL/NTSC option is really a 50/60hz option. The problem is that the PAL colour signal is still sent at the NTSC frequency. This confuses most televisions because the combined signal is neither NTSC or PAL - a hybrid like you describe, which most closely resembles the PAL-M standard which is only used in Brazil.

The solution to this problem is obviously to move to Brazil.

Another is to get an Indivision 4000/CD32

Regards,

I forgot to mention, I modded my CD32 so that I have a PAL/NTSC (really 50/60hz) toggle switch. Most of the time I just left it in PAL.

I can find the details for that mod if you would like... It does not fix the problem - as still does not change the color frequency. It simply changes the default mode.

Yes, please find the source of your mod to switch between NTSC & PAL standards on your CD32 and share it with us.  I assume it is different than using an early boot menu to switch between NTSC & PAL.

I think you remove R203 and replace it with a switch, but I can't locate any solid info on it. I have no idea where I originally found this info. I thought it was in the CD32 FAQ but I read the whole thing again and did not see anything.

This mod is NO different than using the boot menu. It is just is a little nicer because its persistent.

So no it is not a real fix for running a NTSC CD32 in PAL mode.

Hope that helps...

Yes, R203 will do the trick (it's a 0 Ω bridge more or less pulling down Alice's _NTSC pin).

Possibly the composite encoder is switchable as well (R205) but the PAL stuff needs to be present (U33, Y451, ...).
