Computing these days just doesn't seem as fun. Windows PC's have no personality. My iMac is nice, but sometimes I wish I had my A500 and A1200 back. Heck, my one regret is I never got to own my dream machine...an A4000. Memories...

Hmmm...tempting. All the ones on eBay are usually going for a ton. I've been waiting to see if the Natami ever gets released but it's looking more and more like vaporware.
I think I miss the camaraderie as well. I used to love going to users group meetings back when I was in college. There's just nothing like that these days. The worst thing that ever happened was Windows killing off everything. :(

Amiga were/still are fun ... PC's in the earlier days like when i had my 486DX2/66MHz and my 14400Baud modem to connected to BBS's were fun too ...
Now a PC can be fun , but it is more of a nessestity as in we would be lost without the internet and we would be pissed of if we had to browse the web , download etc.. with the speed of the Amiga .

I think I'm just feeling nostalgic since I turned 40 a few months ago. Maybe I'll pick up an A4000 one of these days just to play around with and relive the old days.

I've tried UAE a few times but it just seemed like there was something...missing. I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
I've actually ran about every operating system under the sun at one time or another including DOS, Windows, Beos, freebsd, and various flavors of Linux. I like to tinker.

Same with me. Bored with Win-Lin-Mac. There's still a hope for new stuff you know. AndroidOS is coming, also you've got mobile oses like BlackberryOS, WinMobile or Symbian. I like Symbian s60.
But you're right. It is not the same. I use UAE until something comes up on Mac Mini this very year. But again, no personality nowadays. To me comparable stuff - Symbian maybe.
Get OS4 or MOS and you'll see the difference! :lol: Plus the miggy!!

I actually played with the livecd and was impressed. I think a Natami with a 68k version of AROS would make a nice machine.

Wholeheartedly agree. That's why I like to keep a stash of old Compute! and AmigaWorld's nearby :-)
Compute! rocked. Today's kids nary have anything like it. Some programming rags exist, but they are highly specialised and do not have the personality (games, apps, etc.) that programming on an Atari, Commodore or TI (to name a few) had.
"Computing" (if that's what you want to call it) today pales in comparison. But then again, so does most everything else. Freedom from choice is what you want and freedom from choice is what we got ;-)

oh heck... an A500 is cheap as peanuts these days... and an A1200 not much more - if you want a basic machine... just go get one :-)

WebOS looks kind of original too. I'm interested in picking programming back up because of it. Now I just need a good idea.
I'd also like to see a game toolkit for it.
Although, I have to say - you are not alone in your feelings for the Amiga. While a lot can be said that raw computing power as surpassed the old girl - I for one, don't feel that the flair has. For me modern computing is functional but soulless.

Just buy one now. :) I'm on the same kick myself. Can't quite explain why but I am enjoying it. Also using WinUAE, plus my A3000 is on the network so if I need to get something to it from my PC I just ftp it.

PC's have no soul.. i am surround by Quad core/Dual Core and a few I7's BUT it's like a barren waste land.. lifeless.... but as soon as start to mess around with one of my miggy's my fingers start to tingle. Dont get me wrong i need my PC's for home and work (lots of info and stuff on them) but they are just tools. nothing get my heart pumping more the playing around with Amiga's (yes even when i am trying to fix them). Ahh the good old days.
I also agree about the magazines these days..... remember when mags had cracks/hacks/mods and fun things you can do or program with your computer.. now days the mags are all dull not worth the time to even read them.

Back in the DX-66 486 days, we (me and friends) only used C= machines
for everything that had with BBS's to do, MaxBBS, *sigh* what fond memories! :)
Regarding speed, how true... But it's still fun to see how fast it actually is considering the low MHz!

I remember dialing in to local BBS's with my trusty 1200 baud modem and my A1200. Of course, I also remember using my college's network to get on the internet back before the world of web browsers even existed. This was around 1990.
I installed winuae last night on my MAME cabinet and played a few of the classics. Lemmings is still quite possibly the most enjoyable and original game I've ever played.

I think part of the problem is the way we see our computers these days. Back in the day, having a computer was the whole point, now it's just a means to some other end. Not that we didn't do practical work on those old machines - I did a user group newsletter on an Atari 800- but the computer *was* the hobby. Now, I use my pc for mundane tasks, or for doing my other hobbies. It's a tool, hard to get excited over a screwdriver... ;-)

I'm member of a computer hobby club. They got a monthly magazine too, and it got many similarities with the old magazines (well, I got quite a lot of old German computer magazines).
Maybe you should try that :)

With a wife and a two year old son, there won't be any Corvettes any time soon. Besides, I'm saving that for my 50's. :)

Yeah i feel the same, present computers are a bit boring and same for games, te amiga times was very funny and with out internet!... swaping games with friends, listen modules, experiencing with protrackers or other applications, its part of the fun... yes i can make the same with a pc or mac but its not the same.
I need to reassemble my 1200 and back to feel all of this, hope that morphos for macmini came with the 50% of this feeling at least.

Ahh Nostalgia...
I dont see the Amiga (or any other platform) as separate from computer tech in general. I liked the Amiga and C64 a lot but when their time came I moved on to other things became familiar with those and continued to enjoy my hobby.
I understand why many people would look back on the C64 and Amiga (and other retro platforms) fondly:
-they were used primarily for fun/play,
-they were easy to learn,
-the hardware was less complex and understandable,
-there was friendship among owners,
-the video game scene was small and exclusive,
-personal computers were new and interesting.
It's not so much the hardware as the users that have changed, today computers are everywhere and most of us use them for work. After many years it's no wonder some of the wonder has faded.
