Hello, I am fairly new to the Amiga scene, so please be gentle! :-)
I have just aquired an A4000/040 desktop with a 2GB hard drive running off the IDE port. I have tried to add a 54x speed CD-ROM drive to the system, but I cannot get the Amiga to recognise the CD drive. I have placed CD0 in the Devs folder so that it automounts, but still nothing seems to be happening? Can anyone help me please? :-?

What version of Amiga OS are you running?

Version 3.1

you need either
os3.5 + / idefix or asimcdfs
I've been trying to get mine to work for months but no joy with 3.9

Is there any step-by-step guide for IDE CD drive installation anywhere on the Net? :-?

Hmmm... It should be working with a basic 3.1 install. The built in CD drivers are crap, but they do work. Make sure CDFileSystem is in L: and check the CD0 tooltypes to make sure they're set correctly. If there's nothing there, edit the CD0 file itself to change the device and unit numbers. You'll want scsi.device unit 1. Also, are your master/slave jumpers on the drives themselves set properly?
You should try to replace the CDFS with something else ASAP, though. Try AmiCDFS on Aminet.

No, it does not work. The built-in IDE driver does not recognise CD-ROM drives.
You need IDEfix to begin. IDEfix has an installerscript that does all for you (provided that you have the hardware installed all correctly).
Without a running CD-ROm drive you cannot install OS3.9, so you need at least the demo version of IDEfix on the first run.
Bye,
Thomas

Ehm, scsi.device in 3.0/3.1 doesn't support atapi devices as far as I know, asimcdfs or idefix is the solution if you ain't aiming for a newer OS that is. :-)

Downloaded IDEFix97 and my CD drive is now up and running. Many thanks to everyone who helped. :-) :-) :-)
