Hi all,
This is weird. I can't get a 256 colour workbench on my A4000D with kick 3.1 and workbench 3.9 BB 1 & 2. The most I can get is 16 colours using ScreenMode prefs - the slider only goes to 16 for a Highres screen. In devs I have PAL monitor. SYSInfo shows DMA/GFX - ECS Agnus - 2 meg; Display AGA Lisa Chip. When I run SysInfo on my A1200 it shows DMA/GFX AGA Alice - 2 meg and for display AGA Lisa. What's happend to Alice in the A4000D?
Anyone got any ideas?

Most likely just a software screwup with your workbench install. SysInfo just reports it's best guess of what it sees. Wasn't there another thread about this happening around here, recently?
Check your setpatch version.
Check your monitor driver version. (and make sure it's compatible with AGA, and make sure it's compatible with the version of Workbench you're running, and make sure it's compatible with your setpatch...)
Make sure you don't have an L:system-configuration

Yeah, there was. I don't remember if it was solved though.

I second that. Although it's Devs:system-configuration, not L: :)

Stepatch version 44.38
Monitor Pal version 40.4
Had a system-configuration file in Devs: have deleted it but still no joy.
How can I tell if the version of setpatch I have is compatible with the version of workbench I have? How many other versions of setpatch are there?

A lot. A whole lot of versions of setpatch are floating around.
You seem to have a fairly new one, but I'm not sure it's the newest. You might want to check the boingbag archive and make sure the version you're running is AT LEAST at that level, since you are running BB2.
Also, make sure you've got the proper "AmigaOS ROM Update" file in your DEVS: for that version of SetPatch.
Also, do the same for your PAL monitor driver.
Also, you may want to try deleting ENVARC:sys/screenmode.prefs and overscan.prefs. (The screenmode and overscan tools will make new ones when you click "SAVE", anyhow.)
If everything still checks out, try booting the system with no startup-sequence and from the basic shell, try c:setpatch and see what output you get from it. There shouldn't be any errors, and there should be a line about "Advanced Graphics Enabled" or "AGA Screens Enabled" or something like that.

If the software appears to be OK, it could be that a hardware fault with shift register U975 is resulting in the software unable to check the hardware configuration, resulting in only ECS modes being available. This can happen if you have battery leakage/corrosion in the real time clock area.
Read my notes about it in this post (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=38655&highlight=U976).

Castellen,
Thanks. I had battery leakage and so removed the battery and cleaned the area with a PCB cleaner. I guess the damage was more extensive than I thouhgt. What's the best way to fix this? Send the board to Amiga Centre France, or does anyone know of anyone who can fix these boards in the UK?
