Title: Has anyone ever tried this out? (web browsing on A500)
Post by: sim085 on July 10, 2009, 10:45:15 AM
Hi,

While trying to see what I can do next with my A500+ I came across this article:
http://peta.mobilserver.cz/amiga/

In this "How To" the author states that he was able to browse the Internet on an A500 without any accelerator card connected to it. I tried to follow through the article but could not find some of the software; such as Mosaic_1.2_AmiTCP.lha. Additionall and mui31usr.lha (Magic User Interface). I did find mui38usr.lha but this can not be installed - gives me an error. I also found the source for Mosaic2.0beta but have no clue how to compile it.

Does anyone know from where I can get these two packages? I do not think they are comercial if they once where on AmiNet! or?

Regards,
Sim085

AWeb works for browsing on my A500, but I had to upgrade it to AmigaOS 3.1 first.  :-)  I have a ROM switcher in it so I can boot either AmigaOS 1.3 or 3.1.

Call me stupid, but I really liked the way Mosaic rendered that yahoo! page. It feels much more Amiga like :) ... I already have Workbench 3.1 installed so using AWeb would not be a problem.

IIRC IBrowse 1.22 was still compatible with 68000. I have tried to update an old demo that came with a magazine with no luck, but v1.1x works

BTW, which datatypes do you use? I tried latest AK-Datatypes for 68000 but I'm unsure about datatypes.library and picture.datatype versions... where did you downloaded it? AK Datatypes require picture.datatype v43 but it seems versions at aminet are not 68000 compatible.

Are you talking about AWeb or Mosaic? At some point in time Mosaic was available on AmiNet because I found plenty of links on the web pointing there. However for some reason or another is must have been removed :(

I did find the source but do not know how I could compile it.

I found Mosaic_1.2_AmiTCP.lha from here:
http://asgard.actrix.co.nz/historical/amiga/comm/net/Mosaic_1.2_AmiTCP.lha

lucky find

I've got IBrowse 1.22 (or is it 1.12?) almost running on my 2MB, Kickstart 3.1 A600 alongside AmiTCP. There are a few more memory-saving tricks that I haven't tried yet, though. The latest AWeb has been compiled for 68000 as well.

The patches to get IBrowse 1.0 up to 1.x were very difficult to find. As I recall, they were on an Amiga Format cover CD. I'll look again.

I'm not sure the picture datatypes are important - IBrowse has internal image decoders - but I had to turn off image loading altogether to save RAM.

So from what I can understand, for the 68000 machines there are IBrowser 1.22, AWeb II, AMosaic and ALynx.

I found it hard to understand what to download from AWeb II website. I'll sww what is available for IBrowser.

The patch to bring IBrowse 1.1x-1.2x to 1.22 (along with some SSL goodies and ARexx documentation) is on AFCD36 in :-Websites-/HiSOFT/amiga/downloads/

The patches to bring IBrowse 1.0x to 1.12a are on AFCD23 in :+Look_here_1st!+/AF_on_the_web/Websites/Omnipresence/support/

AMosaic is disatrously obsolete and probably not worthwhile even for a 68000 machine - historical interest only.

For AWeb, you need the 3.5.09 main archive. Extract it, then copy the contents of the 68000 archive on top of it.

ALynx is a good candidate for 68000 machines, but would benefit from a cleaner port and a more up-to-date codebase.

Are the contents of AFCD23 and AFCD36 available on the net? or I would need to have th original CDs? Also is IBrowser 1.0 still a comercial product? or?

I tryed it a long time ago using AWeb on an A500 with 2,5MB RAM and dial-up connection. I remember it was very frustrating - a lot of crashes and a lot of money required to pay the bills :)
