Title: Spirit InMate no go
Post by: Iggy_Drougge on October 28, 2003, 09:44:03 PM
Our user group has come into possession of an
A500 equipped with a Spirit technologies InMate RAM/SCSI board, which sits in the 68000 socket
(See http://www.amiga-hardware.com/inmate.html (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/inmate.html) for a closer description).

The problem is, though the card claims to support RDB and AutoConfig, it won't boot off a freshly formatted drive off an A3000. What little info that still lingers on the net suggests that the set-up (it's got a fair bank of DIP switches) is rather complicated.
It wouldn't happen that someone else has some experience with this card?

What version of Kickstart does the A500 have?  If it has 1.3 and the drive is being formated on the A3000 using the FFS option in Workbench 2.0 or above then I don't think the A500 will be able to read the drive.

The A500 uses KS 1.3, but that shouldn't pose any problem, since autobooting and FFS on hard drives is one of the original 1.3 features.

I believe KS 1.3 only supports OFS and is not capable of reading FFS  floppy or harddisks.  I believe FFS didn't come out until 2.0.  I can rember FFS floppies could hold several Kb more on a disk than OFS and I wished I could read them on one of my KS1.3 machines.

edit: Found this...

"A replacement for the Old File System that allowed more to be stored on a disk. On Kickstart 1.3 this was stored on disk meaning that it was impossible to boot directly from FFS disks, but since Kickstart 2.04 it has been stored in ROM since version 2."
