If you have an ide cdrom connected to the a4000 ide interface on the same cable as the ide harddisk and you have one set as master and one as slave, then you can use idefix97 demo from aminet. Its probably the easiest way to get going.

If you have it connected via scsi then you may need a different package, amicdfs or similar?

yeah, its IDE.
Ill try it, thanks!

Welp, as you know.. Im pretty much an amiga newb.
I have a question, according to the instructions I need:
Amiga Installer 1.24 or better is required.
It has to be located in the system path,
otherwise the installation tools will not work.
im not even sure what this means :(

installer is usually installed in the C folder on your system. What os are you using 3.0/3.1???
http://aminet.net/util/misc/Installer-43_3.lha

im using 3.1.
Ok, so I downloaded the installer now.
and have the CacheCDFS and IDEfix files.
what do I do next? (sorry about all the dumb questions)
When double clicking the Installer file I get a small window.
I tried typing Installer IDEfix and I get error line 0

When you ran the IDEFix program it should have identified the CD-Rom Drive. If it didn't you need to look at the drive setting for Master/Slave on both the Hard Drive and the CD-ROM drive. On two of the IDE hard drives I have here, for some reason they do not allow Slave drives to function properly even when set to Master with Slave. I would recommend that you set the hard drive to master and the CD-Rom to slave if possible. Once that's done, you need to re run the tool to detect CD-Rom drives that came with IDEFix, and you should see your cd-rom drive listed. With CacheCDFS, I don't know as I haven't used that program.

I double clicked the IDE-FIX program
and it says "demo version of IDE FIX".
do I agree? I click YES.
then nothing happens.

As posted above, make sure that the hard disk and cdrom are set as master and slave respectively by using the jumpes on the back of them. HD = master cd = slave.
then unarchive idefix97
run the install program from the folder, this should (from memory) show list of cd drives that are connected properly to the system, then once selected it continues the install of idefix to the harddisk, when wb reboots you get the demo version prompt and once you click ok you should be able to insert cd and workbench will show on desktop.

I did find this link:
http://www.pcguru.plus.com/uae_cdrom.html
shows how to do it, but again... Im pretty much a newb, so I still dont know how to unarchive it.
btw, i do have my HD set as master and my CDROM device as slave.

Ok, I figured it out.
Winzip wouldnt unzip the files right, so I had to use WinRAR and all the files appeared.
Special thanks to Lobai

If the file is compressed by LHA, it's best to use the Amiga to uncompress it. Sometimes Windows will work ok, but sometimes it trashes it.
