Title: Amiga 4000 rom 3.1 unable to read workbench 3.1
Post by: eXidy on June 30, 2009, 09:26:34 PM
I just got 3.1 roms for my amiga 4000 (had 3.0).
Now it wont read my 3.1 install / workbench disks.

They work in my A600, but not on my 4000.

Am I doing something wrong :)?

Does your A4000 show the purple boot screen with the floppy animation? Does your A4000 load other floppies than your Workbench disks?

If I place the INSTALL 3.1 disk (or workbench 3.1) It wont boot from it.
But it will if I place the the 3.0 disks.

Since I have an HD, it wont show the boot screen with the disk animation.

I presume you have a working 3.0 install on your HD then?

So we have established that you have the roms inserted correctly. What happens if you pop in the Install 3.1 floppy after you boot from HD? Does the system recognise the floppy?

You could have a bad floppy that happens to work on your A600; time to make a backup on your A600! Or your A4000 floppy drive is going bad or is dirty.

Yeah, I have a working install of 3.0 on my HD.
im actually formatting my HD now just for the hell of it.

if I pop in the floppy into the HD it does NOT recognize the disks.

my workbench "about" shows:

3.1 ROM
Kickstart Version 40.68
Workbench version 39.29

The floppy's arent bad though, because I confirmed they work in my A600.
The Floppy drive is working fine because I can boot my 3.0 Disks fine in the drive.

From your sig you appear to be using a PPC so will have an 060 CPU. In which case you will probably need the 68060.library in the Libs drawer. If I recall correctly you can delete the 68040.library from the floppy to make it possible to be able to boot into the 3.1 Intall disk. But that would mess up being able to do a full install of Workbench from the 6 disk floppy set.

(sorry if this doesn't help or confuses you.. lol)

Heh, heh! I have my setup working fine!

Anyway, let's just first get some things clear:

- With HD I meant hard disk.
- You have correctly installed the roms: 40.68 is correct for kickstart 3.1.
- If you don't have an 060 card (if you don't know, you probably don't have one) you can ignore A4000_Mad's comment about the library files.

Now some questions:

1. Have you now formatted your hard disk or floppy/floppies?
2. In case you didn't (which would be most convenient now) can you boot into a working Workbench 3.0 environment?
3. If you can; what happens when you insert your 3.1 floppies into the floppy drive? (I don't get the "insert floppy into HD" part of your post. Do you mean High Density floppy drive or indeed Hard Disk; which would make no sense...) Does the drive ignore the the floppy disk totally or does it show DF0:???? or a different comment?

Your conclusion that your disks are fine, sadly doesn't always fly old Amiga floppy drives. Your findings are just that. Your WB3.1 floppies can be read by your A600's drive and your WB3.0 floppies by your A4000's drive. Floppy drives can become picky, dirty and fail. Some disks work in one drive and refuse to work on others. The problem can then lie with the floppy itself or with the drive; it has nothing to do with the roms.

When I stick the 3.1 disks (any of them) in the drive, i get:

DF0:????

@eXidy

Sounds like a disk drive that does not work 100%.  Take the drive out of your A600 and install using that drive.  We also sell new drives if you need one - have several.  Also the only way to verify a disk is to read it from track 0 to 79 - using tools such as transadf.  My guess your A4000 drive needs alignment/cleaning - that service we offer also.

Well im not sure about that quite yet.

I used all the same disks for 3.0 and 3.1 (all a brand new batch maxell 2DD)

One set reads 100%
the second set reads 0%

in my 4000

however, the 600 reads all the disks.

Ive tried each and every disk and the only ones that dont read are the 3.1 disks is my 4000.

Hi,
You don't have High Density disks formated as Double Density do you? They will work in your 600 but not your 4000 unless you put tape over the extra "hole".

Tape, a wonderful technical workaround, fixes almost everything.
I just might try using some on my finances.

No problem, I did the same thing myself when I first got an A4000.
