Hi Guys,
Due to getting another request for me to do so, I have taken this from a thread I posted it in a few months ago and put it in this tutorial section.
An A.Org member had started a thread and said:-
I've been mucking about with my A1 for the first time in ages tonight and was hoping to burn a CDRW of some midi files.
I've forgotten how to do this with MakeCD.
Do I select Add > Image file?
Also, blank CDRW is showing on WB screen as uninitialised. Is there a way to rectify this?
Hi,
My own method is to put all the data I want written to CD into a drawer called Container. The plan being that the contents of the drawer Container are written to the CD.
Firstly I launch MakeCD and click on 'Add'
Then I click on the arrow circled red in the screengrab below.
Then I click on the arrow at the top right of this screengrab to give the CD a name ("Midi Files" in this example)
Next I drag and drop the drawer Container into the top left window. ("Dir Container:" highlighted in blue)
Now I click on 'OK' at the bottom left of the screen.
I click on 'OK' again at the top right of the next screen.
Next I click on 'Write tracks.....'
Now I change 'Test mode _on_' to 'Test mode _off_'
change 'Session' to 'CD-R' and click on 'Start'.
Finally I click on 'Update + OK'
After exiting MakeCD it appears the newly written CD-R shows up as "Uninitialised" until it has been ejected and re-inserted.
:drink:
.................................................................................................................................................................................
This is by no means a complete guide to all the functions of MakeCD and anyone can feel free to add to it of course.
Oh, to backup your Workbench partition to CD-R you would simply drag and drop its icon into the window instead of the draw called Container.
:)

Brilliant! Thanks for this. I use MakeCD once in a while, but I usually waste much time retraining myself how to use the program. But I won't complain too loudly about the steps being non-intuitive since the author/publisher was kind enough to make the software free for all to use.

I wish there were some ImageFX tutorials like this.

@A4000_Mad
Nice!
Just a couple of remarks. If the directory he wants to burn in the CD contains too many files, i think it's better to choose "use image file" instead of "Direct to CD writer". Also, in all cases, the partition where the directory/image file is located must have enough disk buffers. Usually 1000 are enough. Fast file systems like PFS or SFS are strongly recommended.
This will improve writing speed and decrease the chance of a buffer underrun.

Nonsense! I always burn my CD's with the "Direct to CD Writer" option, use not more
then 32 buffers on all my FFS partitions, and I never had any issues with it.
Not even with my little 68000 CPU A600!

uh! you must be a very patient man then! :-)

Indeed I am! :biglaugh: (Only with my A600..., My A1200 & A3000 are fast enough though)

Nonsense!
This isn't nonsense. It's a fact that the tips i posted WILL improve writing speed. But, even if you object, i really don't understand your aggressive attitude. Should i call you an ignorant and make myself look like you? What is it with some people?

I was just saying that you don't need 1000 buffers (strongly exaggerated and memory eating) or another filesystem than FFS to burn a CD. So, call yourself an ignorant.
I'm not the one who's having an agressive attitude, but your reaction is
to provoke a flame-war. It's by people like you that the level of this site
drops below zero. Your arrogant attitude makes me sick.

Very good explanation of MakeCD!

Now, look who's talking about making "the level of this site drops below zero"!
I remembered who he is. This is not the first time that he behaves in such childish and provocating way. It's something that he does out of habbit. He and gertsy were the 2 reasons that got me pissed off in the past and made me to delete my tutorial:
http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27171&page=2
http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=27171&page=3
And i bet that i will find more provocating posts by him if i search the forums, but he is not worth it. The "dude" just can't help it...
He either has a personal problem with me or serious personality issues. I think the second. Eitherway, this is not my fault and i don't have to take his crap any more.
So, SERIOUSLY, it's people like him who are hurting the forum by discouraging other members to post something meaningful, because they know in advance that some prick will rush into the thread to post something offending, in order to ease his inferiority complex.
THIS HAS TO BE STOPPED.
@ A4000 Mad
Very good explanation of MakeCD!
See? Another example of what he is made of.
One day later, he remembered to give credits to A4000_Mad just to make clear to everyone that he is a "nice guy". What a slug...
Somebody stop this kind of people.
-
I have just reported him. I don't see what else i can do.
mind you that i'm a member since 2005 and he is only the second person i report.

I'm also a member since 2005, so this makes no sence! I reported you too, dude!
This is not the first time you're starting a flame war, I remember now.
You're displaying anti-social behaviour. I suggest to go see a shrink.
maybe he can figure out what's wrong with your head. I think he finds
1000 buffers in your head that causes you to behave like this.

Ladies!
Don't make me have to start whipping out infractions here. I don't want to do that any more than you want to receive them. 3 infractions in 10 days and you get a day off from the site. More than that, and your vacations WILL get longer.
We're all humans, we should all be rather civil to one another, and if you can't handle it, maybe it's time for both of you to take a break. Perhaps it would be best if both of you walked away from this thread (and perhaps each other) until calmer heads prevail.

We're all humans,
I'm not so sure of this.

I just wish he keeps himself away from me, since he doesn't like me or whatever the reason might be that makes him to behave this way. I have been harassed too many times by him and i think i've had enough.

Please consider it from an outsider's point of view. I'm just coming into this situation, and all I see is the two of you riding each other about who is worse. Frankly -- and I truly mean no disrespect -- you might be too close to the situation to see how childish it seems.
Believe me, I've had more than my share (and your share, and his share, and well, hell, everyone's share) of enemies, so I've been in the same boat.
Both of you, walk away and if you come back later and still can't get along, why not go into your UserCP and put the other person on your ignore list? That way you never have to be bothered by them again.

Who is harassing who here? I just didn't agree with him and gave my opinion on
the matter. But because he can't handle criticism, he accuses me of being aggresive,
offends me and starts a fight:
But, even if you object, i really don't understand your aggressive attitude. Should i call you an ignorant and make myself look like you? What is it with some people?
Everyone can read the thread and see that I was not reacting aggresive when I replied
to his post.
That's the last thing I have to say about it.
-
Everyone can read the thread and see
Thank god for this!
-
Seriously guys, if you can't get on, add each other to your respective ignore lists (see User CP)

AmigaMance, I think you saw insult where none was really intended. He was just stating the he does it with less, even if slower.
AmiDude, What you posted was irrelevant as this topic is about improving and achieving high performance. Not just what works. Also you didn't need to return in insult in kind. You obviously realized his mistake in taking what you wrote as an insult and then instead of being nicely explaining the error. Returned in kind. Starting and feeding a flame war.
Just turn and walk away from the topic.
