Title: Word Vs Word Perrrfect
Post by: ElPolloDiabl on June 23, 2009, 08:11:35 PM
Round 2: fight!

Hi aFans, PCultists, PeeeZoelitists and McMacinationists:),

Which do you prefer Word or Word Perfect.

I want to give M$ (read Microsh@ft or MicroShlock if you prefer) some credit... I do like M$ Word. I use to prefer Word Perfect or Final Writer (Amiga only), but Word perfect has a difficult learning curve. Plus you need to use it regularly to remember all the codes.
Word takes dumbness to new levels. I can be creative on it, without knowing what I am doing.

So does M$ have a winning formula or is the sadomasochistic relationship (with M$) to go on?

I prefer Word.

I stopped using Word Perfect in the early nineties when they introduced the Windows version at the office. It was slow on those machines. Next thing I knew, I was using Word. Plus, Word had this 'everything in your face' presentation instead of embedding everything behind endless menus. It made it easier.

Who needs a word processor when you have Google Docs? ;)

Because it's easy to use it's dumb... pfft.
It's clear what people prefer, MS Office stomps mudholes in all other commercial office suites. I'd bet most people didn't even know Corel still makes Word Perfect.

If you write something in a word processor that you want someone else to read, you'd better be saving in Office format.

BTW, silly pet names used to show your anti-Microsoft sentiment is stupid, especially when you use their products.

I like pages better than either of those two. For anything that doesn't need to be stylized, emacs.

I use a Unicode text editor like Notepad most of the time, but when I need complex formatting, I use Word. Like many others, WordPerfect's "reveal codes" feature is the only thing I miss about the product. It's not difficult to emulate in Word, though.

I install OpenOffice on my family's computers because it's free. I like Google Apps, but it's blocked at work (and rightly so).

The forced switch from WordPerfect to MSWord in the office I used to work in was a disaster and took years to get back to the same level of productivity.  In my mind, WordPerfect was and is superior to MSWord and it was just one more stupid managerial decision made by a couple of new people at the top, that were not used to using WordPerfect and were not aware, or satisfied that WordPerfect could save to the MSWord format, that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost productivity and the initial cost to purchase MSOffice for over 400 employees.  There were several business practices that had to be changed, simply because MSWord could not do all the things that WordPerfect was capable of.  It was a huge f**kup.

I'm afraid they've had a "winning formula", *pause for silent whimper*,
since they introduced the office-package and gained world-domination.

I've used Wordworth7 and another older app that I can't recall the name of
right now (seems the brainwashing works) and liked them both.
The latter had a function I haven't seen in any other wordprocessor, in which
it graded the document as to how readable it was.

Now with the latest officepackage, Word has a very different layout, and
takes some time to get used to, but it works faster and better than any
previous version (which was incomaptible with itself).
M$ has even learnt that the os may crash Word from time to time, so
they have implemented a function that re-creates documents after
a bomb.
If we f.ex used Mac's at work, I'd rather use them instead, no matter
what wordprocessor they use mostly (isn't word ported there too?).

Ah! I think the other Amiga-app was called Pro-Write3 or something.
I liked that one alot, but It's really really old!

I really like Word, a lot, but only up until 2003. I have to use the 2008 version at work and I despise it. I used to use Open Office at home, but I was having issues with older docs I had made with 2003, so I just uninstalled it and went back to using 2003. I do, however, like OpenOffice. On Amiga, which my Amithlon box is now deceased, I used Final Writer.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Open Office Writer yet. It's free and up to most word processing tasks.

It's so funny how everyone has an opinion on how a word processor should work.

For Amiga, I *LOVED* Final Writer.  Everything just fell into place, and it had some nice features like the integrated dictionary/thesaurus that other entries never did do quite as elegantly.

For Windows, I tolerated Microsoft Office 97, 2000, 2003, and Open Office.  I can beat them into submission and get a reasonable document, however, it always feels more like I am battling the software than using it.

I actually like Microsoft Office 2007 a lot.  The rethink on the interface is really well done, and I seem to find everything where I'd expect to.  I find that I swear at it a lot less than I did at previous Office versions.

In fact, I think I may have actually developed a new way to rate word processors.  I propose the ACWUPD score.  (Average Cuss Words Uttered Per Document)

When I got enough money, I'll buy the newest WordPerfect.
Nowadays WordPerfects have the charm of both being WYSIWYG as well as being able to edit the text style (editing the document 'underrwater'). So from the very beginning you exactly know what you're doing.
Plus, everything just feels logically to me with WordPerfect, in contrast of Word and OpenOffice.

3 user license for MS Office home edition for $129 retail is pretty cheap for what you get: Word 2007 Excel 2007, Powerpoint, One Note.  Yes free is always cheaper but $40 bucks per license for 4 quality major apps IMO is well worth paying.

I always use OpenOffice Writer. I used to use Gobe on BeOS and Zeta, but tbh OO just works, regardless of the platform I'm working on.

I use OpenOffice because it's available on linux (of course), windows AND a windows portable version. I can import spreadsheets and other wierd things like that, save to pdf files, etc. I don't write or print very often so I don't need bells and whistles, but it's nice to know they are there

For those interested, we just listed Word Perfect 2000, dirt cheap and easy to try out.  You can always get newest version if you like this one.  For $15 including shipping to US and likely most of the world, you can't go much wrong.  This is slightly used though.

Word Perfect is nice.  Word is ok (used mostly due to people at work).  Open Office Writer is nice/neat, good to use at home.  But then Excel is better that Open Office Calc Spreadsheet, especially if you use it at corporate/work level.
On Amiga, I'd say: Final Writer 97, AmiWriter (from Haage&Partner), Wordworth 7, ProWrite (nice & simple) in this order.

A few months ago I was sent a 60 page document in Word format, which I opened at work with openoffice.  Unknown to me openoffice re-formatted the page numbering and clauses.  When referring to the page numbers, the original author and I got totally confused as we were talking about different things in the document!!  It took a while to work this out though.  After that I think i'll stick to Word, I think.

I guess it's down to document complexity. I know that recent editions of word do pose problems with OpenOffice.

If you're only doing the basics, OO.org does the job. Might be tempted to get that WP though at that price.

We should send this thread to Microsoft. It's the only way they will learn how to make good software.

I use AmigaWriter/WordsWorth/FinalWriter on Amiga, NeoOffice on Mac, OpenOffice elsewhere, but I have to use Word when none of them is available, e.g. at work.
