Since the Classifieds section was meeting with very limited success, I made the executive decision to try something completely different.
Specifically, I thought it'd be a more fun thing to go auction-style. Since you guys are all used to buying and selling on e-Bay, allow me to present...
VBay -- the Amiga.org auction house
URL : http://www.amiga.org/forums/vbay.php
Please note that the classifieds page is still there, and still free at http://www.amiga.org/forums/classifieds.php to bring you the best way to both sell, auction, and buy your Amiga gear.
Hope it helps, and good luck..

Nice, is there an option to have more inputs for shipping costs (like for Europe, Asia, America, Africa)? Not sure for other countries but I would have 3 options in my case, domestic, europe and world but I can only set 2 of them.

I'll look, but unfortunately it might only take the two options. You should specify that stuff in the description as well, just to be clear on it.

Quite cool, Wayne. It's nice to have a new auction site, other than Ebay. Maybe we'll get more usage on here, instead of there.
-
Think maybe I ought to open it up to more than just Amiga stuff? I do have a complete garage full of crap to clear out... :)

It's your site, Sir. You do what you feel is right or necessary.
-
Just popped some zip sticks on there. Would be nice to have other currencies too but hey..... THIS AUCTION SERVICE IS FREE!!!!!
-
@tony,
You might actually want to describe the memory sticks, rather than just saying "zip sticks". How many, what size, working condition, etc.. Maybe even a picture? that's kinda what it's all for.. :)

Hi Wayne, they are joysticks not memory. I guess I can edit the description.
EDIT
Changed the description... can't change the title though.

I don't think this aution style marketplace here is a good idea, there's ebay for that, I think this goes against good-intended people willing to trade/sell/buy amiga items for reasonable prices in a first-offer gets it basis...
Just my $0.02

sigh.
This is a perfect example of "can't please everyone". Even if Bill McEwen appeared out of the holy cloud handing out blessed complete systems, someone would bitch about it not including all the software ever made.
-
@Wayne,
I like the auction site, but are you a licensed auctioneer? Do you need a license or something?

Well, I don't think I'm the only one. I just said I don't think it's a good idea, I never said remove it, I hate it, etc. I don't like/do that kind of "bitching"... I'm pretty sure there's other people in this site sharing my opinion but they probably won't even bother to comment on this. I just think the nature of auctions makes items *sometimes* sell way overpriced which goes against reasonable dealing between fellow amigans "my trash is your treasure"...
Sorry Wayne, I didn't meant it like that.
Cheers...

I didn't take it personally. I'm just flustered at the whole "can't please everyone" aspect of running this site. I wish I knew who nailed it when they said "being an Amiga webmaster isn't about pleasing everyone, it's about pissing off as few people as possible".
Besides, someone would have to actually participate in an auction for any of this to matter.

I'd joke about "did I mention how much I hate you all" but you might not get the Eric Cartman impersonation through a forum post.
The Classifieds tab is now "Buy / Sell" and leads to both the auctions, and the classified pages.
"I hate you guys"... :)

Great idea Wayne, thanks for continuing to expand and improve A.org's site. It seems to me that you have been putting a lot of time and effort into the site lately and I for one really appreciate all your hard work.
I will now always look on A.org's auction site before going to eBay to look for something. When I am ready to try selling again I will take advantage of this free service.
Thanks again!
-
I think the auction thing is great. People post stuff for sale all the time on A.org and handle the whole thing via pmail. This looks like it makes the process easier.
-
Blimey, there's something new being added to the site every day :-o
-
My question is:
Wayne, when are you putting Karlos up for auction? =D

Huh? Eh, what? *looks around nervously*

hey Wayne..awesome idea! I suggest you make it for all retro computing..this way guys can buy/sell all their stuff here instead of coming here for their amiga gear and ebay for the other stuff in their collection...

I'm not sure expanding beyond Amiga and Amiga-like items is a good idea;do you really want to poach the C64,etc. sites?
(I'd like to think this will be used to get stuff in the hands of those wanting to use it;BUT I know there are a few ebayer always looking for "some fool" selling a complete system which the ebayer will snap up and then part out for maximum dollars.I've even noted certain ebay sellers buy complete ham radio setups from someone who insists on selling dad's station "to a person who will appreciate it",a week or two later the station is broken into 19 new auctions with even the manuals and connecting cables sold seperately.(I'd insert FLAME,Pissed, and other smileys here if I remembered how)
-
I Went ahead and posted an auction for Utopia. I thought I'd give this a try.
-
Very good idea.
Is there a chance for a "buy it now" button? (Final prefered price by the seller).

When you create an auction, buy it now is an option.

Amiga.org is the best site out there, period. I hope it is expanded as it could expand our userbase. Besides it would not be poaching but rather taking a piece of a bigger pie, good for all.
-
Pretty sweet Wayne, I will test drive it as soon as I get some free time! This will help me unload some lower priced items without the eBay markup.

This is so cool.
I know I have some stuff in the basement next to the yard sale stuff. I've been working up the motivation to put it up on eBay.
-
Hi All :)
Im a long (long!) time lurker but decided to create and account so heres my first post!
I noticed on the classified ads currently on that there isnt and "item location" bit. Am I missing something or isnt this field available? If not, I think that'd be good :)
(wow that was painless! ;)

@taj
Please note that this isn't e-bay. You don't have the ability to comment or question sellers via the vbay system either. You do however have their name if you want to click on it and ask them any particular questions.

Referring to that post about expanding it to include anything else 'via your Garage considerations' Wayne, perhaps you can just have a mirror site of sorts? A completely different auction tree for anything not Amiga... this way when I want to search for Amiga stuff I don't need to worry about Amiga Keywords or worry if someone has omitted these words from there auction altogether...
Also, have you run the necessary maths and/or consequences of the potential extra load on your servers if this was to Erupt over night? ;-)

We have no problems with the eruption of anything on the servers at the moment. Unfortunately, since "putting up a mirror site" would entail spending $300 or more for software (vB, etc), I can't see it really taking off. Especially since the software we're using for it isn't something I wrote and can't really expand a great deal.
