Hello everyone, Im new to this forum and this is my first post. I hope I dont make an ass of myself :) Im pretty new to Amiga, but I own 3x 2000's and 1x 4000/040.
I recently picked up this 4000/040 and know nothing about it. I purchased a 1950 monitor & a vga adapter with it but cannot get the monitor to sync correctly. I have posted pix.
While im at it, I was wondering where I can get the 3.1 roms for it and a keyboard. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well I don't know if this will truly help, but Big Book of Amiga Hardware had this to say about the 1950.
"Common Problems
A sync problem may be caused by the monitor detecting sync on the Green input and then disabling the horizontal and vertical sync inputs. Removing the 10K R854 resistor or the 10uf C812 capacitor on the small vertical board may fix this. It may also cause problems of its own, so be warned. The analog/TTL switch appears to be prone to failure. However, if switching the switch brings back the picture, it may actually be that the 74LS123 (IC805) on the same board is failing. The suggested course of action is to replace (or at least resolder) this chip first, since it's a commonly available part. A defect in the way the 74LS123 is mounted may be present; there should be +5V on pin 3, but the way the chip is mounted or the board is manufactured, it may be intermittent. There should be a PCB trace between pin 3 and pin 16, however, pin 3 is not soldered to this trace, but only friction-fit (non-plated-through holes?). When the analog switch is moved, it causes intermittent contact between pin 3 and the trace. A soldered jumper to pin 16 is an easy way to fix this, or you may be able to solder to the trace already present. Another common problem is the failure of a multifunction sync chip. Replacements should be available from Sony. The high-voltage boards may crack; this can be one cause of the monitor that starts working when you hit it. A 1 megohm resistor in the second power supply's startup circuit goes bad, causing the monitor to remain dark. Replacing the resistor with a higher wattage one may help prevent the problem in the future."
If I understand what they are saying, it appears that a syncing problem is a common issue with the 1950 monitors. Do you have any 1084's or other commodore monitors you can check to make certain that there isn't something wrong with the video output? Also you might want to check and see what monitor you are using in the prefs screenmode section. Might be set from something that won't display on that monitor.

Well, I have a 1080, 1084 and a 1084s. Those all seem to be RGB monitors. Can I hook up a A4000 to RGB? I do have the cables, but I cant see anything when using those monitors.
Jon
After reinstalling Workbench 3.0 I was able to use the 1084.
I still need the newest ROM available for this along with a keyboard, please email me if you have one or both available. thanks

Hey Jon, welcome:)

Thanks again Scott for the disks!

The display problem could be with the 1950 monitor not the A4000. Do you have another monitor?
Use 1084 monitor. Before using it, set workbench screen to something low like 320 by something...
pm send.
DO NOT FORGET TO REMOVE THE BATTERY !!! (the cylindrical shape thingy will leak and damage your board).

Plug it into another monitor on DoublePal/NTSC res. Also plug a different computer into that monitor.
-
Not a problem:) Anytime!!
-
you said that you didn't get a picture at all when you attached a 1084 to it? Kinda sounds like you had the screenmode set to DBLNTSC or DBLPAL which would make the screen out of range of the old 1084. After you reinstalled 3.0 it reset the monitor screen mode to either NTSC or PAL. the 1950 should sync as low as 15KHz, so now that you have reinstalled *edit* the OS, try hooking the 1950 back up and see if you get a picture.
Sorry, left some words out.

Here is what has happened:
I managed to get a 1084 to work, but im still curious why im having probs with the 1950.
According to the VGA adapter instructions, I am to drag the different frequency files (DBLPal, DBLNTSC, Euro72, Super72, Multiscan and VGAONLY) into the Devs/Monitors drawer.
The strange thing is, after re-booting, I dont see the new DISPLAY MODES listed.

Can you send a screenshot of your monitor drawer?

Jon,
Looks like this issue has come up before. This link was posted with not much reply. Just thought that was courious.

Thanks for the help! I ended up fixing it.
I formatted the HD, reinstalled Workbench 3.0.
Dragged all the video modes into the dev/monitors directory on workbench
and its perfectly clear now!
thanks

Thats great. Just to be fair to Commodore engineers, the 1950 monitor was more meant for Amiga 3000, in fact all marketting material we have shows it on top of A3000.

Well today I tried to use a Sony Multisync monitor, I couldnt get it to do anything :)

Hi
When you obtain any Amiga the user-startup file probably should be your first port of call to try and work out the history of the computer and see just how the previous user used their machine. Also Tool Types can be edited and various scripts written. Customization is the great strength of the Amiga, but can be a touch puzzling when machine and peripherals become severed.
Hope that makes sense.

I got an A4000/040 and it has this weird key place on the front. The person I bought this from didn't include the key thing and I want to know what this does. Will not having the key disable functions of my computer?

It is a generic keyboard lock key. If your keyboard works, your good! Anyone who had a A4000 that I knew never used the key and usually lost them! ;)
As for trying it out while not haveing a keyboard... Well, you could find a generic BIG-din to PS/2 style adapter and plug in the A2000 KB you have... Heck, find an old KVM switch and your set!
-
It has keyboard and a nice mouse. I'm sure there's something that isn't compatible between it and the A520 and that's why it's not showing up on the screen. I have a feeling this computer is all good. I may have to install OS 3.9 or whatever newer Amiga OS I choose on it, but really I'm just really anxious for a monitor. I don't understand why it's not compatible with the A520 (in thread search A520 to contribute to that if you want :p), but knowing Amiga stuff, I'm guessing there is some reason...:griping:
Monitor coming is Commodore 1960. This monitor sounds nice but I heard there's some stuff that can go wrong with it too. Does that ring-shaped magnet you use on old CRTs help at all with small display anomalies on old multisync monitors like this? A teacher at school was showing some various cool stuff like how to discharge a CRT without getting electrocuted and also he showed this magnet. One of my old monitors has a "degauss" button on it. Is the circular magnet the same thing?

Good for you, and hello. I snagged a 1950 for real cheap recently, but, it needs some work to display as clearly as yours.
-
by the way: thanks for the reassurance about the key. I was pretty sure it was needless to worry since you can either adjust it with a needle nose pliers or just disconnect it from the mobo. i just wanted to make sure!

Beautiful looking setup!
BTW, I like your avatar and screen-name..... I spent enough on that game (venture) to probably buy an A4000 & 1950!:)
I remember chatting with you in the past on rec.games.video.arcade.collecting!

I thought that avatar was familiar. I remember it from the arcade forums. Haven't been there for a few months now (can't afford all of my hobbies at once).
I'll move back to the arcade stuff once my new garage/gameroom is finished.
What are your plans for the Amigas? Games, just tinkering?
