Hello
I'm pretty new to the amiga system(A1200). But I'm trying to learn.
I'm trying to find a list of must have programs, and what they do..
I'm using WB 3.1
My list so far.
Kermit. (file transerfer serial cabel)
DOpus (File browser)
IDEFIX97 (Hardrive and cdrom with exstra hardware)
LHA (unpack program)
UNZip (unpack program)
Amiga Explorer (File transerfer program)
Amirc (Irc programs)
WHDload (Load games made for diskets from hd)
What nettwork program is best, and what's the diffrens?
AmiTCP
Miamidx
So I need a music program. I have bougth the mp3@64 card.
And probaly a lot of other stuff you maby can guide me to.
I want the amiga to play old games and maby lisen to som music. And it would be fine to get the network up.

I think you have all the main ones there... For TCP stacks I'd go with AmiTCP as it seems to be faster on low powered Amigas. MiamiDX is more powerful, but I doubt you'd ever need the extra features - AmiTCP will do everything you need to access the internet, transfer files, email, browse the web (slowly), chat on IRC etc. For playing music, you can use most players with the MP3@64 and supporting libraries. I'd recommend Amplifier with no skin for basic use - most skins won't look very good on standard AGA. A good browser for basic use is AWeb, and if you have the machine set up on the network, use RC-FTPd instead of serial cable transfers - much more friendly, and faster too!

SnoopDOS - For whenever the aforementioned programs fail unexpectantly.
I always Leave Out SnoopDOS for quick access.
Wouldn`t go anywhere without it!

Go for EasyNet and a (compatible) [wireless] network card. You don't even need to use AmigaExplorer then as you can add shared (PC) network drives directly to your WB desktop. I'd also recommend iBrowse over AWeb, it runs much better on my 1200.
What HW are you running?
If you've got a Blizzard you'll also want to install Blizzkick.

I miss my A1200. Enjoy yours Bro!

as an alternative, you can get the ClassicWorkbench which comes all the essential software setup already. just google classic workbench.

ToolsDaemon, MagicMenu, MCP, NewIcons, etc. for sprucing things up a bit?

Thanks for the list.
I will try to setup a god newbie software list as I install.
Any god advise on programs to emulate adf disk on the amiga. So I can install programs withaout moving them to a disket first.

The most important thing that you must do is register the wonderful WHDLoad!
It is the single greatest gaming purchase you can make for your Amiga..

Re: using Kermit
If you are serious about file transfer, you have to get a PCMCIA ethernet card and driver. For years I used my PCMCIA for a CD drive which finally stopped working recently. I tried a network card instead and now I'm wondering how I ever managed without it ;)

I think THE must have program should be OS3.9 !!!
x303 :D :D :D

Get a copy of DiskSalv4 before you really need it! (and you will...) The free version - DiskSalv2 does work as well, specially on newer OSes.
-
KingCon, Reqchange (maybe built in in MCP?), AmiTradeCenter and/or AmFTP..
-
LZX
AWeb/Ibrowse
ABackup + XPK libs
PFS3
Visage
MooVId
RiVa
and a lot of speed-up patches ;)

Just get classic workbench for whatever hardware specs you have.
