I just had to ask the question after seeing an Amiga A4000T go for over $1000.00 on fleabay (I think that's what we call it here). Is that a resonable price for it? I'm new but have read that for a collector it would be rare cause of the number that were actually made. Any thoughts from the collectors(Here) would be greatly appriciated cause I am looking to purchase a ton of Amiga in the near furture and this would be something I would want.
Thanks everyone,
LoBai

Let's put it this way: Would I pay that amount? No. If it was a Commodore one (only 200 made) I probably would though.
These can still be bought new from Softhut. (or at least, a year ago)
I do collect Amiga's, and all things around them but part of the fun of collecting is getting bargains. Like 3 A4000CR's and a 4000T for € 350,-.
-
Wow that is a high price !
I wonder what my Commodore A4000/030 Desktop is worth .... mmmm i paid about 85 Euro for it about 4 months ago .
-
Sure, I've paid that for some Amigas in my collection... last A4000Towerised one I paid for that amount however had a 233mhz PPC 604e board as well... I run OS4 classic on it... though haven't booted it for awhile... SAM took over...
You pay what you want for whatever... I have around 90 Amiga Systems and never sold anything Amiga... but over the next year or so I am going to start compiling good systems and selling them off... I just haven't got any room any more... LOL
I have two SAMs and I want more... the classic branch will fund the future branch... beautiful ;-)
-
Thanks for the feedback. I will keep an eye on the best value as I might go broke paying this kind of cash lol.
I also want to dable in the PPC, can you install a PPC board in a A4000T? I think that would be very cool.

Yes, you can.

Just checked out the prices of SoftHut and they are very much in line with the $1,000.00 ebay auction, so I guess paying this isn't to unreal. Systems with nothing starting at $1299.00 USD.
Thanks,
LoBai
-
Absolutely. $1000 is a bargain for A4000T. They are not easy finds either.
Anyone dreaming of paying less can get either lucky finding one, or can continue to dream hehe.
-
Thanks nishtek,
I have to agree with you after reading a ton on the A4000T. No one had anything bad to say about it on the net. I can't wait to get mine:) Have lots of plans for it!!!
-
I got mine with "Buy It Now" on ebay for £250 :-)
-
Depending on the condition of the unit, that was a great deal!

For an Original Commodore A400T... yeah, probably worth it... but for that amiga Tech one... I really don't think so, the A1200 offers better value for money with better and cheaper upgrade options.
-
I really like the A1200 and will get one soon and I do agree it has a ton of stuff to put in it. I also like having tons of exspansion slots like the tower has. I guess I will just have to get both:)

My question is more, why the 4000T over the regular 4000 (030 / 040 / 060)?

Jon
It's the only Amiga with both SCSI and IDE on the motherboard!
Though I really think it's just the cool door with the tinted window. That's why I bought mine, anyway.
But seriously, way more room in the 4000T case, probably a whole lot less of them made than 4000s, and no NiMH or NiCad battery to leak on the motherboard (all button cells from the factory, I believe.)
-
So when you use IDE say connecting a CD Drive in the A4000T do you have limitations on what type of IDE hardware you can use?
-
Tone007: yep, the 4000T has a coin-shaped lithium battery standard, and also has terminals for attaching an external battery....
LoBai: I actually never used the IDE on my 4000T, but I would assume it would be similar to that found on A1200's, etc. I don't think there are too many limitations beyond the usual >4GB issues for HDD's with some OS versions... ugh, too tired to post links ATM, just search for it.... CD drives shouldn't be a problem, assuming you have a suitable filesystem....
Other cool points about the 4000T are the 2 video slots, the room for drives,etc... (mentioned already) and I actually thought the headphone jack was handy.... Too bad my 4KT is pretty much dead ATM..... it's a great machine, When it Works...... :furious:
My 4000T is still not booting, it's in pieces, sitting in my living room.
As for upgrades for any Amiga, it's all about the accelerator.... that's the expensive bit......
-
All of the world's problems would be solved if everyone had a 4000T.
-
I'm satisfied with my towerized A4000 - it's worth at least 3k.

@zipper
My Amiga 4000T with 68060 is worth $1350. That includes all costs in it. At $1000 and fully working its a bargain. I'd agree with you though, that its worth at least $3000. Market value wise, realistically about $1000-1500 with 040 cpu.
Its major pluses:
- the battery
- the SCSI & IDE controllers (you can use both). SCSI is faster.
- nice unique case
- well designed board
Its the only Amiga that is the way Amiga should have been built. Only thing missing is the flicker fixer (which was included in A3000). A1200 don't compare to it as they don't have any zorro slots.
Actually A1200/600/500 are in class of their own, i think its cool today to have a keyboard with computer in it.

Agreed, I had to work and spend a lot to make a better one ;-)
-CSPPC, Prometheus, Voodoo3, PicassoIV (because of the flickerfixer), CVPPC
-the fastest SCSI + 2 slow IDE interfaces
-big lithium battery
-biiig ugly tower with looots of free slots
-3 UWSCSI + 1 IDE drives
-2 HD floppy drives
-X-Surf
-I'm nuts...
-
Thanks Marc,
I just purchased one will be getting it on Friday of next week so I can't wait!! You guys have me so excited.
Anyone have a good accelerator for sale for the 4000T? LOL

@LoBai
The Amiga 4000T is likely the best Amiga 680x0 made. Some argue the A3000, because of the build in flicker fixer. However the A3000 is too tight to expand inside, while A4000T has plenty of room.
Either way you'll be happy. The accelerator is a bit tough to find these days. But perhaps the new GVP ones from softhut might do? The 68060 is plenty speed (unless you can find PPC but thats risky sometimes-thinking Phase 5)

The GVP one should fit (it resembles the old CBM68040 board), but check with Joe of Softhut first for some photos.
I do strongly recommend putting a low-profile heatsink on the ALICE chip, which is known to get hot on all A1200/4000 series.
And you likely will need an external flicker fixer (the white, external indivison ones by individual computers, lots of people offloading them), graphics card such as cybervision, network card such as xsurf.
If you need the heatsink or kickroms drop us an email: support@nishtek.com
We also have a few spare 68060 CPUs for backup. you might drop us an email anyway, as we're compiling list of A4000T users, those that may want to upgrade the machine (internal flicker fixer if enough interest exist) and the occasional parts for it.
have fun.

Worth every penny I would say. No Amiga can out'purr'form an A4000T fully loaded. Great machine.
... So did you buy it ?

@LoBai,
I got my A4000T from either an AO or AW member for $1000. It was loaded with Cyberstorm MK3 060 both motherboard & accelerator loaded maxed with memory, a Cybervision3D W/FF-SD, Toaster 4000, Delphina sound card, X-Surf and more. This was about 5 years ago. Worth every penny.

Hi, is it a philosophical question or your offer? :)
-
@Bloodline
Unless you need to run a Video Toaster 4000 & Flyer.
-
Unless something has changed Software Hut hasn't had A4000T for several years. Last time I checked it was about 2005.
-
IMHO an A4000D is much more sensible if you dont want multiple 5.25" and 3.5" hardware internally mounted.
The A4000T is a bit of a monster, yes its gigantic but in comparison with a typical PC big-tower it can not take nearly as much 5.25" and 3.5" hardware. The case is strange IMHO, it is designed to work as a desktop and a tower (that is why the two 5.25" units are 90 degree turned).
Though I can understand why it was popular in professional environments where a heavily loaded Amiga was running 24/7, I guess if thats what you want to do an A4000T is a great solution. For myself a loaded A4000D is plenty fine :)
-
Yep, Amiga is no longer a poor mans hobby, it's moved to the collectable price range and as equipment dies and supply becomes more scarce it will only become more expensive. Ironic that a machine that started out as a "people's machine" ends up as just the opposite.
Me, I'm out of the market. I'll keep what I've got but if it dies I'm not replacing it, UAE is so much faster and better that I no longer can justify the price spread.
-
Am I the only one who think's it's really stupid how people pay this ammount for old computer gear? Don't get me wrong I love old Amiga's with their feel and charm that you don't get from other machines, but they are just going to hardcore geeks that are clearly obsessed with getting anything which has the Amiga and/or C= badge (more money then sence maybe?).
It's a shame such a simpleton/tight git like me will never own such a nice machine at a resonable price. Besides i'm happy with my A1200T and A4000/040.
