Title: Parallax Propeller
Post by: ChuckT on June 08, 2009, 02:29:49 PM
I bought a Parallax Propeller because it is cheap, it comes with a manual showing how it works, and you can do it yourself as a hobby.

I plan to play with it and if I like it enough, I'm going to develop software and hardware designs around it.

Yes.  They have a starter kit which has a port for VGA and a keyboard.  It comes with a manual which teaches you all about the processor instead of being left in the dark.  It runs at about 80 MHZ.  There is a new crystal that would get it running at about 100 MHZ.  There is a low cost board for about $30 which you would populate with chips and there is a professional board for about $160.

They are developing a larger or bigger chip which would run faster, have more memory and would address more bits.

They make microcontrollers so the possibility of interfacing this with other processors is endless.

If you go to Xgamestation.com you will see that someone has already made a computer with it which includes a 6502 chip and they already have Basic on it.

I may develop my own system with multiple processors on it.
