Hiya,
I'm curious if any of you are installing OS 3.9 on top of an older OS install? I'm considering installing 3.9 on top of a 3.1 install and I'm wondering if this is possible, if so are there any special considerations. My goal is to get 3.9 installed so I can use a 80gb ide drive via Elbox fastata 4000. I haven't decided if I want to retain the scsi system drive and boot from it and use the ide drive for storage or if I want to rid all the scsi drives and use IDE only.
The system is a 3000T with Warp Engine 4040.
Thoughts? suggestions?
Thanks!

3.9 will install over 3.1 just fine, however your best bet for performance is using the SCSI connector on the WarpEngine. IDE on Zorro bus won't be nearly as snappy.

You don't need OS 3.9 for this. The FastATA software in combination with a new file system like SFS is sufficient. OS 3.9 only makes it more complicated.
Also installing OS 3.9 on top of a customized 3.1 might be problematic, either. OS 3.9 assumes an unchanged installation. Any add-on to 3.1 might make 3.9 fail.

What you always should do when you're upgrading an OS, make a backup of your current WB 3.1 HD installation.
When it doesn't work well you only have to format the drive and put your WB 3.1 HD installation back.
My advice is to install OS 3.9 on a separate partition and test it.

I was under the impression that you needed OS 3.9 for it to recogonize HD partitions >=4GB.

Ain't necessarily so. Check out NSDPatch on Aminet.net. OS3.1 in conjunction with it will allow you to place nicely with >4GB drives.
