STAY AWAY FROM 1.02 , it's VERY BUGGY!
1. Installer Doesnt work anymore (default amiga installer)
2. System gets very unstable , crash alot on boot up
3. Redraw speed is alot slower than compared to 1.00.
i used all day today to find out that powericons 1.02 was the problem. , so i now moved back to 1.00 .
A BIG TIP TO ALL , STAY AWAY!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrRR!
-
Yes, I noticed 1.02 is very buggy. I switched back to v1.01 and all seems ok again.
-
Is that warning for version 1.02 or 1.03?
When giving out such warnings, it's vital to be accurate.
-
bbhogget: 1.02 as its stated above!
-
bhogget: i have no idea where you got 1.03 from but i didnt mention it at ALL did i?.
1.02 = BUGGY
1.01 = dont know because i havent bothered to touch it as i wasted 1 friggin day on 1.02 (installed yesterday but didnt notice the extreme bugs until today)
-
There's a new release 1.03 on Aminet...
1.03 (25 Oct 2003)
-Loading very little PNG icons (16x16 or so) could cause decoding buffer overflow with consequent system crashes. Fixed.
Download here. (http://www.aminet.net/aminet.cgi?string=powericons)
-
obviously there is an 1.03 out, i didnt know that until now since i downloaded mine yesterday..
Short: NEW! 32bit PNG icons on your Amiga !!! (68K and MorphOS)
Uploader: uni-dea@jumpy.it (Elena - www.elena-fractals.it)
Author: uni-dea@jumpy.it (Elena - www.elena-fractals.it)
Type: util/wb
Requires: AmigaOS 3.5/3.9, Hi/True Color Workbench
Replaces: util/wb/PowerIcons.lha
Version: 1.02
PROGRAM HISTORY
----------------------------
1.02 (23 Oct 2003)
-Default icons got wrong size with icon.library < 45.10. Fixed.
-Improved Workbench dragging of PNG icons using a white rectangle. Please don't ask
me to improve it further since it's only a drawback for WB.
-Added SWAPTEXTCOLORS option
-Using GHOST=100 no additional calculation will be computed for default icons,
so people thinking that the ghosting effect slows down scrolling may try this
(even if I don't believe that)
-Fixed some dangerous alignment problems that could cause crashes under some
circumstances and problems with Amidock.
-Overall code improvement and optimizations. Scrolling might be a bit faster now.
this is the buggy one. (1.02)
and madmatt just told me he tried 1.03 and same bugs in that one!
so i am back to 1.00 ..and i wont go upgrade till the problems are fixed....now you all know!
cheers

Didn't ever test 1.02 but 1.03 works perfectly here, I've changed all my icons to png and never going back to the old ones...
040/40, Mediator&VirgeDX 4mb, OS3.9bb2,....
-
I'll pass this one, too much fuss for little gain. OTOH for some that is exactly what they want out of computing.
-
And bitmap icons are just so passé anyways, these days it's animated vector icons that count. :-D

Before enforcing that just try a recent whd game installer. It calls upon icons to show you what icons you can install for the game. Powericons 1.02 and 1.03 is crashing the system when this action is called. There are probably other issues but this is the one that stands out for me. Tested on real Amiga and uae, same effect. CrAsH / Recoverable alerts!
1.00 and 1.01 doesnt seem to have this issue. Before blaiming the installs, keep in mind that its PowerIcons thats the massive hack and breaking stuff. Ill keep on using 1.01 for now since it seems most stable.
-
here here, (for the first post)
-
I was never going to use that program anyway, too hacky for my liking
-
OH !!...we must advice Elena Novaretti, so i don't understand why this version contain a few bug.......
-
Anyone tried contacting the author, rather than complaining here  Maybe your time would be better spent in sending a bug report.
-
@ lempkee
so i am back to 1.00 ..and i wont go upgrade till the problems are fixed....now you all know!
Yes, you wrote this "A BIG WARNING" in capital letters on the front page, so now we all know. But does the author know about your problems as well? A silent bug report would have been a little nicer IMO.
-
author has been messaged about it , and besides this is a forum and telling people to stay away from a buggy software like this , YES i think thats the way to do it!
i wasted 1 day on this issue and i wasnt very happy about it.
anyway this problem is for both 1.02 and 1.03 , lets see if 1.04 is better when and if that comes.
if its wrong to tell people that a program is buggy then why do we have "SOFTWARE ISSUES" thread? and why must i be silent when such a thing happens?
i have got heaps of PM's with people telling me the same happened to them and thanx to my post here they found out why their system rebooted instantly when they clicked on an install ICON!
-
>if its wrong to tell people that a program is buggy then why
Your rude style leaves a lot to be desired and is not very helpful to encourage the author to help you. Instead of having grrrrr fits in a forum, what about reporting to the developer privately in a friendly tone rather than making her look bad publicly? If a bug is so serious that a public warning is warranted, you can always do that in a tone that does not automatically annoy.
-
well dietmar, its normal to get very upset after wasting 1 day with copying back all of your system because a simple thing as an installer stops to work, and i didnt even consider powericons as the issue because 1.0 worked fine!
if i was rude , sure maybe i was , but i responded as a normal person would and i got upset because of people asking if it was 1.03 when i had allready said 1.02 "3" times!.
hiding issues like this is never a good thing, and when it comes to such a wonderfull patch/hack as this one, i will never move away from it but i wont use later ones unless i know they work as they should.
and i am sorry if i hurt anyones feelings , my plan wasnt to spam the software , just warn the users about it, and when i did... several said the same thing about 1.03 aswell, so what would happen if i had'nt done it?
i remeber back when people talked about the buggy os3.9 installer! , people was then allowed to say it was buggy , i might have not been that rude in that thread because of several reasons i guess.
anyway i don't see what i have done to annoy anyone in this thread with the first post! , sure my second and 3rd was annoying and i agree totally on that because i was very annoyed when that was posted.
(i took that as , HOW CAN YOU BE SURE that this is a bug or not...bla bla kind of assumption, thats why i got very upset , my fault.. and i know i will try to stay abit more calm if such a thing happens again.)
cheers.
pps: there was 3 updates in 4 days! , and i reported errors on the first release , i can work around that so its ok for now, but 1.02/1.03 i cant work around, thats why i posted it in the forum here to let people know! (other than that i messaged the author about all issues)
pppps: and i dont think we can make her look bad, she has written some of the finest patch/hack on our system + given us a great program (Z.E), if it had been crap i wouldnt have bothered to email her/visit her guestbook + reported the issues here.
-
Lempkee: At this point I'm happy I don't need to rely on hacks for Png Icons.
Essentially this all boils to fact that AmigaOS has a lot old and klunky parts that are years late of major rewrite. This icon interface is limited to shared pen icons, anythign beoynd those causes a lot of work and carefull planing/testing to allow old programs to work while making new formats possible.
-
joannaK: yes this is very true and i couldnt agree more with you , but in the long run you benefit on running this patch/hack.
because you dont have to remap icons anymore , you dont loose chipmem (its always at max here now) and stuff like that , + old icons are now faster (no remapping) and you can use highcolor icons or 256color icons without having a pen crash or what ever.
so all in all this patch/hack is great and i wont ever move back to the old one , unless its for os4 on an amigaone where chipmemory aint a crucial problem.
on a pegasos with morphos you dont really need this patch but its available for it and i guess it will be fully integrated or? , or why is there a mos version at all?
(that part is abit confusing, but i doubt its there for no reason at all (powericons morphos. )
cheers

@ All
As you should know, this patch is a hack, it is relatively new and it is still under improvements.
So, i suggest you all, to read carefully the PI readme docs, before useing a new program/patch or otherwise, don't use it at all.
The bug under PI 1.02, was due a problem useing 16x16 icons and it was been fixed, in PI 1.03.
Enjoj with those great patch or . . . don't use it at all :-)
Ciao
-
framiga: nope , its in 1.03 also as i allready said! and madmatt said etc.
it crash on installer packages!.
and yes i am aware of that its a hack and its under development , but 1.0(1) is the best so far.
goodluck on the bughunt!.
-
Lempkee: I don't belive this patch to do much good to MorphOS 1.4 on Pagasos. These machines allreasy have PNG icon support and working installer...
But there are stil people using older versions of MorphOS on their PPC-turbos. Those versions didn't have full Ambuient on them. So for them (and 68k Amigians) that patch is indeed having nice potential.
-
joannaK:ah ok so thats why this patch is for morphos also? ... ok..
thanx for the info!
-
Elena uses a wierd 68k/PPC mix of MorphOS and
AmigaOS 3.9 on her Pegasos, that's why there's a
MorphOS version, so that SHE can see PNG icons
at reasonable speeds after all:-)

PowerIcons for MOS, it is ONLY, for the people that want to use Workbench 3.9 on MOS 1.4 instead of Ambient.
PI 1.03 under Amiga WB 3.9, works perfectely here.
No problem here with Installer too.
Ciao
-
Yep. Heard that on Irc.. Anyhow.. This one tells quite a lot about MorphOS compatibility if someone is using OS3.X Workbench right atop of PPC-native Morphos on Pegasos.
Otoh: I'm having a lots of 68K stuff in this machine like: TCP/IP stack, Fat95, Amirc, TVPaint, Sid4Amiga, IBrowse, Rebol.. So it's not so big surprice that Workbench might work too.
-
@lempkee
you were right
With some install (ie WHDLoad or other icons related) the system crash, with PI 1.03.
Sorry but i've never used it bedore :-)
Ciao
-
@framiga
well its good to know that we were right, what ya think, the thread was put up just for a laugh ?
it was put up as a warning because we know it was broken and to tell others, not to ask if it is broken as we already knew it was ;)
-
framiga:yep, and remeber same on 1.02 also, i got an email from elena now and she got the same problem also, so things are getting sorted i guess.
cheers

i just got the newest 1.04 version here is what it says:
1.04 (30 Oct 03)
-"Virgin" icons associated with executable files were loaded as Projects rather
than Tools. Fixed.
-Fixed a very dangerous bug in PrepIcon() that could lead to serious crashes and
system instability loading single-image color icons via GetDiskObject(New)().
-Added a workaround for a bug in the original IconControl() function which could
lead to crashes in conjunction with some single-image icons.
-Sometimes using TextMode=1 the icon text was not completely erased leaving a
vertical line at the extreme left. Fixed.
-Improved DrawIconStateNew(). Icon and text alignment should be more precise now.
-PNG icons for drawers without proper drawer data were passed to WB as tool icons,
thus the associated drawer could not be opened. Fixed.
-The example PNG icons included couldn't be loaded into paint programs because they
still had a wrong crc (most of them was created and snapshotted under the old PI
1.0). They're OK now.
-I created and included PowerIconsLogo.jpg: now PI has its official logo :-)
haven't had time to install on my WinUAE yet, but i am willing to try - one icon at a time!
-
1.04 , sure install it..
i was helping her with it , trying to get the issues fixed and it seems 1.04 is atlast very stable here (compared to 1.02) , anyway 1.04 holds the same quality as 1.0*/1 did, atleast for me and my setup.
i wish u good luck on trying it , its a great patch , but it has its downsides (no scalos and dopus magellan support) but it alsi has many big ++++++ :D
cheers
