Still not having been able to get a hold on a new working set of Workbench for my A1200'a istarted to look in other directions.. somewhere along the way, someone sugested to try something rather simply... take the harddrive, connect it to the PC, and run WinUAE. Install Workbench from there... Could it work? I am going to try, i think there might be "things" about how they read the drive, but that should be limited to a few different modes, should it not? The drive in question is a smaller drive, 1Gb IBM.
Happy for any sugestion.

why not just buy os3.9cd ?
beyond that i doubt it will work (using uae and install it) .
os3.9 is still for sale and has os3.0/1 and 3,9 on the cd.
if thats hard to find then you only search the wrong places.
goodluck and welcome to amiga.org

Hi and welcome...
What exactly do you mean by "a new working set of Workbench"?
What are you trying to get to work?
OS3.9? -or what...
A PC can't just read/write files from a HD you formated with you'r amiga...
-
Problem is, my Amiga Workbench floppies for my A1200'a have died.. offcourse, being 10 years old atleast... Floppies never was the best to store stuff for safe keeping, i been trying to get a hold on a working copy, but as it turns out, nobody has any, or want to copy it to my disks, not even to the original disks, even tho i have to admit, sending the original disks in the mail, bad or not, sounds a bit stoopid...
If i only had a running Amiga, problem would be gone, i need nullmodem cable setup to a computer with internet, or the amiga itself connected t internet.. get a adf reader, and have it simply write out the darn disks from adf's.. Seams im stuck, i just dont wanna pay the somewhat to high price for something i just wanna get running for the fun of it...
I mean, im not that huge a Amiga fan, it is just for nostalgic reasons really.
Sorry

If you own an amiga a1200, surely that came with a set of WB disks right? Then Legally im sure your entitled to a copy of wb disks to copy onto your original disks. Someone please correct me if im wrong.
-
Hmm...
If you don't want to buy a copy it's going to be darn hard to get someone to give it to you for free... :-)
Hmm...
Have you tried eBay? There's very often cheap amiga soft/hardware... You could give it a go there...
But if you want it *just* for nostalgic reasons I'd recommend winUAE on your PC...
-
Try to find the Amiga Format CD 50, 51 or 52. They have Workbench 3.0 disks on the CD. AF had a special premission to put it on this CD's. The disks are packed in DMS format.
-
Thats why i said nobody even wanted to copy it to my original disks, even if i wanted to ship them to someone, so i tried getting someone in town, but no luck...
And also, where is the nostalgia in playing your amiga, from the emulator at the PC ?
The nostalgia is in the tac 2, the TV, and the panic you get for swapping floppies... I was bright enough to save all my floppies as backed up compressed disk immages, on cd, now problem being i cant get them back on to disks without a working installed OS.. PC and Amiga dont write to floppies the same way, remeber?
*sigh* i just so wanna play K240...

Oh, new post missed.. Um, those cd's wont help my much, as i cant read em on the Amiga, need an installed os to read the cd on my PC, and ship it over by nullmodem....
Am i missing something here?

If you get the latest WinUAE you can in fact read Amiga formated hard drives with it. You can aalso install WB to that drive and put it in a real Amiga. I have heard of several people doing just that. It was even talked about in a thread here a few days ago.
-
Yeah, rumor said so, im going to try, better look at that thread... thanks.

I've got a spare set of AmigaOS 3.1 (floppies and manuals) you can have if you pay the P&P...
-
Um, not totaly sure, but i think the A1200'a runs on #ickstart 3.0, that would mean i need to get a hold on new rom's, right?
Feels like im chasing my own tail...

OS3.1 does work on 3.0-ROMs.
OS3.5/3.9 require 3.1-ROMs.
-
Then that probobly means i would be much intressted, unless i get this WinUAE to install properly and then run the disk in the amiga.. i'll have a go at that first..

I did it with WinUAE and it worked out great. Like you
said when you have 10 year old disk, I don`t see anything wrong with a backup of something you already own. The way I did it was I formated my drive on the Amiga, (a 520 meg) then put in the PC. WinUAE took it alright. It was perfect to restore my system and install some good stuff from Aminet.
-
I cant seam to get it to find / format the drive on the amiga, i was guessing it had to do with it not being correcly partitiond, i might be wrong thoo, any ideas?
Also cant seam to get WinUAE to use the darn drive, probobly for the same reason..

Try to add it to WinUAE, in the add harddrive settings and use a workbench.adf to boot up, also go to Aminet, and get IDEfix97. Have it unzipped and set up on some place on your Windows drive. Make shure you add that to you winUAE harddrive settings.
After WinUAE loads up Workbench, use the find device in IDEfix97. It should find it and let you partition, and format the drive.
-
Hhum, cant seam to get it to work anyway, guess im getting tired, it is getting late here. That, or im just plain not thinking in the right way... I think they call that being stoopid... How do i add the idefix97 to the harddrive settings? itseams to have no place to go?
Oh well, just like me, needing pictures drawn up, so i can find my way fron the bedroom, to the bathroom (just next door)
Thanks for all the effort you guys are sending my way.

-
Oh just unzip it into a folder then, make shure you add that folder to the drive setup of Winuae. It will
look like it is a drive. Open it and just run Find Device. It should find it, and let you set up your Amiga harddrive
-
Well, so far its simple enough.. problem is i get this funny little thing, where it wants me to select something, and there is simply nothing there?
"Exec device" only option is "uaehf.device" and in the large box to the right, there is clearly stated "nothing to select"
Um, try this, walk me, like a baby, step by step, should the drive be partitiond at all? should it be formated? what way if at all? should it be master / slave, does it mater? should it ... any ideas?
Its a 1Gb IBM 2.5" it works perfecly well, in the old laptop i butcherd it out off atleast... Same in my P4C2.4Ghz.... might it be the Gigabyte "raid" chip that stands for the ide interface thats messin? it IS set to run as standard ATA aso it should be ok, but?
I dont know, you guys are probobly better at this then i am..
