Here in the states, there's an article in the June edition of the magazine "MaximumPC" which lists the, "10 Failed Technologies We Wish Had Survived." Number "3" on the list is The Amiga. They say, "OK, OK! We recognize the significance of the Amiga! Stop emailing us already!" By the way "1" was HD DVD.
-
Why not post the whole list?
-
I don't wish HD DVD had survived. BluRay was always cooler, what with using the newly invented blue lasers and whatnot. Besides, Amiga wasn't "failed". Sheesh.
-
no i read that. no 1 was mr blobby.
-
I agree with weirdami. I never liked the specs of HD-DVD, BluRay is far better in many areas.
And Amiga wasn't failed. Amiga Inc. yes!
-
Love my HD DVD player....no plans to replace it with a BRay.
-
@beller
Love will soon turn into neglect when you can't buy any new titles for HD DVD anymore.
I am glad that at least one format has won. Whether it was HD DVD or Blu-ray that doesn't really matter to me.
-
Is there a link to this article somewhere on the web?

I am glad that at least one format has won.
Why? When dual format players would certainly have become the norm. And we would have had the best of both worlds and continued competition.
-
@flashlab
No..still love it. As TIME magazine pointed out on introduction, the HD DVD player is the BEST up-converting player out there. Older DVDS look nearly as good as HD/BR disks which cost signficantly more for the same movie.
I have a HUGE library of standard DVDs which I can watch. Personally, the future of HD movies for the home is already here...downloading. I'm doing this via an Apple TV. HD movie rentals from my couch for $4.99/each. As I said, no plans to buy another format player. Seems like a giant waste of scarce cash to me!
Didn't mean to get into a BR vs HD DVD discussion.
-
Yes please, i would love to se the whole list

Looks like it's only in the print magazine. I can't find a reference in a search of the site.

Which months edition is it as there are a couple of torrents over on demonoid?

Is this true? And just how good to normal DVD's look?

I read in a lot of the tech sections of the newspapers that the biggest obstacle to BlueRAy wasn't HD-DVD but in fact DVD: HUGE installed base of players, enormous number of titles, movies look as good as most people want them to be. One reviewer said: its the content not the quality that matters: people wint pay $4000 to get the hardware to have a better look at an actors pimples..

article in the June edition of the magazine "MaximumPC"

Due to popular demand the complete list:
1. HD DVD
2. Apple Newton
3. The Amiga
4. Tube Amps
5. CRT's
6. DVD-Audio
7. MiniDisc
8. Rambus
9. Keyboards with real switches
10. Knobs
Sorry about not including the complete list but now I'm sure everyone will want the whole article so they can better understand the magazines reasoning.
-
That's a stupid list.
-
Rambus??? When did the PS3 loose the console war?
-
Knobs? WTF (crosses legs nervously)....
-
No wonder no one has heard of the magazine, it's a random list of unrelated things.

MaximumPC is the only PC magazine I'll read. It's my one last bastion of flair in the boring world of PC compatibles. It reminds me a tiny bit of the original Amiga magazines I used to be able to read.
For all of you that want to read the article for free - maximumpc.com will have the full issue as a PDF in a few months on their site.
http://www.maximumpc.com/articles/PDF%2BArchive
I wish we could have the remaining Amiga magazine sell us a PDF online. I can't afford shipping overseas plus the subscription but I likely could afford a PDF version. I won't even ask for it to be free like MaximumPC is after a few months.
:-D

Indeed, how can you say CRT is a failed technology? Tube amps too. They are both things which were really popular at the time but have been phased out purely for cost/practicality reasons.
You can only call a technology failed if it was still a valid technology but died for silly reasons. Like company mismanagement, poor advertising, bad reception from the customers, etc.
Also I have to agree that HD DVD while being much more organised (all its features work on ALL HD DVD players, something Blu ray cannot claim) is/was in the inferior format.
Blu ray made big claims and it seems will (eventually) deliver on those. The problem was always cost and the fact Blu ray being more ambicious was missing most of its promised features when HD DVD was already finalised. But once the players actually WORK, Blu-ray will be an excellent format.
I already love the fact that its REALLY hard to scratch the disks because of the hard coating they had to put on due to the data being so close to the surface. Sure it makes them more expensive to manufacture but it also forces them to manufacture them well, because a shoddy disk will not work at all whereas on DVD I have a ton of DVDs that were not glued together properly and I am sure will start to separate and fail in years to come.
HD DVD on the other hand stuck the layers together the same way as DVD so still left it wide open for poor mass production.
Blu ray disks just feel so solid compared to DVD/HD DVD due to the thicker back layer. Its good to be able to accidentally drop a disk and them brush the dust off with an easy wipe from your clothing, without leaving a single spec of dust or scratch on the surface because its so glossy.
