Amiga.org is currently looking for an active moderator for the news and forum section.
The Job
The most important thing to know about being an Amiga.org moderator is that most likely, you don't really want to be one. Being a moderator is not a glamorous position. It takes a great deal of hard work, and dedication. The overall amount of time a moderator spends on Amiga.org, he or she will be reading posts, editing posts (keeping things civilized) and scouting for news.
You will spend numerous long sessions of several hours moderating blatantly trivial disputes. You can't just tell them to go away, or to simply shut up. You have to stay civilized at all times.
A moderator is entitled to his or her opinion on any subject, but in the interest of keeping the view of this site balanced, we would prefer someone who isn't extreme in their opinions, who generally doesn't let arguments get personal, and can work professionally enough to not let their opinions get in the way of the role.
The Payment
There is none ... Everyone at Amiga.org is helping out on a voluntary basis. You will however become a member of a great team of nice people and sometimes obtain information that is not ment to go public (yet).
How do i apply ?
If the above text didn't scare you away ... you can send a mail to kees@amiga.org and apply to the job. Explain why you want to help out and why you think you are the best man/woman for the job.
If you have any questions, you can post them in this thread or e-mail one of the staff members.
*******
Any posts/comments that contain complaints/putting down candidates will be deleted with no hesitation.
-
That would be cool :-)
-
I'd apply but I think that would just entice a small riot.
-
Hi,
I bet Kees would throw in a pair of them Amiga.org socks. :-P
Coder

I bet its a lot of work, :-)
-
@ coder
Like i just told you on #Amiga.org (http://warpzonebbs.com/cgi-bin/cgiirc/irc.cgi) ... I only have one pair ... you don't want to have them ... :-D
-

Nope, not when you used them. No matter how many times you washed them. :-)

I'd love to help but I fear I wouldn't be able to dedicate enough time
to it.
Good luck in the search guys. :pint:
-
I'd like to apply, but I fear that I would attempt to end all arguments with:
"You're both wrong, AROS is the best, you suck, AROS rox :-P " :-D
Well, I say good luck to whoever gets the job, 'cos it's not going to be easy especially with OS4 just around the corner!
-
I would...but
You will spend numerous long sessions of several hours moderating blatantly trivial disputes. You can't just tell them to go away, or to simply shut up. You have to stay civilized at all times
errr...
also, I don't think I am enough of a member of the community, being a returning user, who knows jackshit about Amigas on the grand-scale of things :-D
plus, I already don't have much of a life... :-D
edit: plus I have a propensity for foul language, which flies in the face of the TOS :-P
-
OK, you've talked me into it... I'll do it!!! :-D
On a serious note, if I DID do it then nobody on ANN would be able to accuse Amiga.org of being biased anymore ;-)
-
Hmm.. Perhaps I'm not suitable candidate for this vacancy. ...
-
@Kees
I'm with Wilse (don't have the time) and Downix (it would probably cause a riot :-P ). There are enough people on other sites who think my spending eternity in the fires of the Underworld is not punishment enough for having the temerity of expressing an opinion.
But seriously, I have way too much on my plate already and would not be able to give it the time it deserves.
Good luck in finding a suitable candidate. I'm sure the right person will turn up soon enough.
-
I... won't apply :-> Im too rude, so is my english. Hope You'll choose someone that is not a ,,camper'' ;-)
-
Hmm.. Perhaps I'm not suitable candidate for this vacancy. ...
Yes, You're. ;-) Go for it.
-
@Joanna
I think you'd be great! Send in an application!
-
It may not be glamerous Kees but it does give one some "kudos" which must be nice.
I'd apply, but dispite the amount of time I spend looking over the threads each day I know virtually smeg all about the new Amiga stuff and fear I'd make a tit of myself quite frankly.:roflmao:
-
Umm, is somebody leaving? Or are more moderators needed?
-
@Kees
I say put it to a vote in a thread where one person is only allowed one post.
After the recent comments made over some moderators here and help keep the site balanced, I suggest each candidate should post in less than 500 words why they should be the moderator.... then put it to the vote. This way the community gets to choose the moderators, not some people behind closed doors who may or may not have a hidden agender.
my 2p :-D
-
I'd love to, but I just haven't enough time for it. :-(

Nice idea! I'd go along with that :-)
-
As much time as I spend here reading posts every day I think I may just give it a go. I'll have to shoot off an email to you. Heck If been here a long time, even though my account doesnt show it. I've been an Amiga user for ages and still search for all the news I can get my hands on.
-
If you would like to apply .. you will need to send me an e-mail.
:-)

I left. sniff sniff :-(
Yeah more moderators would probably help the guys. Moderating AO can be alot of work, and at times you will have people lose their temper and have a go at you, but there is a great team in place to support whoever decides to come aboard.
-
I'd give it a go if my English wasn't bad :-(
-
(http://www.armourarchive.org/ubb/bump.gif)
-
My english is lacking, and I'm hardly unbiased enough. :-)
It'd be a nice and probably painful occupation though.
-
i wouldn't mind doing it if some other people did it as well, cause my moderation would be on and off...
my ranks a bit small :-(
maybe have "mini"-moderators for each topic, and then a few un-employed rich people to be 24/7 for news and whole sections?
-
Kees, I'd be uber keen if being a Moderator came with a free subscription to Amiga Org Magazine!!! :-D
That would be better than being paid!!!
-
Yes, but Amiga.org moderators have to actually WRITE for the magazine, so there's a trade off. :)

Then I'm sure I could be convinced to write some AROS related Articles ;-)
-
Well I put in for it. Heck I would love to write for the Mag too! I have to much time on my hands!!
-
Job Opening @ Amiga.org
Give it to "DoomMaster" :-D
-
I would apply if I:
1) Was less biased.
2) Had more time.
:-)
-
ummmmmmmmmmmmm, this should be sticky until some1 gets the job
i've applied, some1 else should too :-D
-
Hmm.. Yeah, Kees needs help badly... Seeing he's beginning to mix up people ;-) (Kees knows what I mean)
I'd like to apply, would help to forget my current state of affairs (so to speak) but I'm afraid I won't be onboard to long if everyhtings turns ok for me..
So Kees, how many applied ? Any lurkers out there take the bait ?
-
All those who say `Doomaster` say.........
Aye !!
Aye!!Aye !!Aye !! Aye !! Aye !! Aye !!
-
OK, I accept the position when do I start.
:-)
Well, don't rush to your mailbox, there's no e-mail there.....just kidding.
But to all those of you who figured you wouldn't be qualified, you are all qualified, in my opinion. Send Kees an e-mail if you are interested....don't disqualify yourself.
Speaking as an amiga.org regular reader, I would be glad to have any one of you as a moderator.
-
aye! :-D
-
But to all those of you who figured you wouldn't be qualified, you are all qualified, in my opinion. Send Kees an e-mail if you are interested....don't disqualify yourself.
I've changed my mind now, I want the job! - just like I wanted that IT tech. job i wasn't qualified for. :-P
-
I would be the perfect moderater!
* Never used an Amiga or amiga emulator in my life
* Have made about 4 posts on Amiga.org
* Only joined to say a few things in the "Atari ST, our old nemisis" thread, because I use Ataris
* I spend most of my time on Atari site and ebay, not Amiga.org
That's as unbiased and objective as you get! *cough*
Seriously, I hope you do find a good moderator... good moderators are really important for the spirit of an online community I think. They should certainly not be in it because they want power just for the sake of having power. Those sorts of people are usually the worst! Amiga.org seems to have a pretty good spirit to me. Hope it stays that way!

Well, I applied. Figured since I got the time and do keep myself civilized most of the time... :-D
jokes aside, I think a moderator should be able to see something from every angle and not put his or hers opinion into the decision wheter to keep posts free or to change them, and I'm good at seeing things from all sorts of angles.
-

Alright, stop being the suckupalready :-D
-
I would apply, Kees, but I like having a girlfriend and as much as I love amiga, amiga doesn't put out. :-P
Seriously though, I lost a lady 'cos of my Miggy before, so whoever takes the job, I wish you all the best. You have strength that I never could. I'm WAY too much of a hornball.
-

You shouldn't be amazed at how difficult that is.
For starters, if I'm on any of the sides in the AOS/MorphOS/AROS split, I'm more inclined towards AOS. Because I know what troll posts irritate me to a certain extent, I know they'll irritate the more rabid AOS fans far more. However, I'm not a MorphOS/AROS fan, so I don't know what kind of comments would irritate me (beyond the obvious '.... is a load of crap', or something), so I tend to let another moderator pick up on those. I might draw other moderators' attention towards particular potentially-suspect posts as well.
(Hypothetically speaking now) Then, the balance needed is altogether different. From that perspective, AO staff ought to be 'aligned' to different sides to begin with to provide a balance.
(More reality speaking now) I think the above paragraph needs to be part of our (AO staff's) focus in finding a new moderator.
All of that aside, I try my best to be an 'outside onlooker' to content in these forums. I try to judge them from how a techie stumbling on this website would think of the forum content.
-
mikeymike mindfullymentioned:

;-) That would be the best approach, I think.
 The position is tempting, and I feel somewhat qualified because it involves skills that I use to make a living, but I'd have to place myself in the "not enough time" camp.
:-? Actually, now that I think about it, how much time per day / week does the positon require?
-
Actually, now that I think about it, how much time per day / week does the positon require?
I don't spend that much time on amiga.org (I think)... if I'm not getting involved in particularly deep discussions, I think it comes down to about an hour a day, two all in all if I am posting more than a couple of comments. Moderation is generally done quite quickly, the occasional discussion with other staff.
Even the "hour a day" estimate is amongst my usual visits to other techie/news sites. If I do any moderation, I keep an eye on that thread a bit more.

Personally I want "NoFastMem"... Damn, I love that guy
I've been married for 17 years, but a guy like that can turn a guys head... What a guy...
If you get lonely in the night, I'm in the old chateau, no pressure ;-)
-
"I mean to have you now if it must be burglary!"
"It's as big as a rugby ball already, it will die, it will DIE!"
-
Before I consider the position I need to know,
Do you guys press charges?
:-o
-
Hope you find your new moderator, Kees.
It would be interesting, if I didn't have a couple of stars (the
real, gasseous variant) to look out for at the same time ... ;-)

There will be no "jobs for Blackadder quotes" scandal here :-)
-
I think that may be the gay lieutenant from 'allo 'allo, thinking about it...
I thought it was Monty from Withnail and I at first, hence my post above
-
It's out of the episode "Private Plane" in Blackadder Goes Forth. That's where I know it from anyway. The one with Rick Mayall (sp?) and the other guy out of the series Bottom. Very funny episode.
-
Ah yes, I know the one, with Adrian Edmonson as the Baron...
Ah, when will comedy be like that again, eh?

The top quote is from Red Dwarf (fourth series, I think, were we first meet Ace Rimmer). The lower one, you are quite correct, is Ade Edmonson as the "What a poof!" German Air Ace from Blackadder goes fourth :-)
Blackadder and Red dwarf are both avaiable on DVD now :-D
-
heh heh, while i was still in school, and in the chamber choir, we went to a contest, lost, and lo and behold, the guy who made the red dwarf theme choon came along and taught us the song :-)

:-) Thanks for the vote of confidence, sir. I'll think about it. At an hour or so per day, it should be feasible.
@All:
:-? What do you think?
@Kees:
:-? How long before the decision is made?

How long before the decision is made?
well it's been quite a while already...

well it's been quite a while already...
The "spin the bottle" tournament is taking longer than expected. There were complaints that the bottle wasn't quite regulation size, so we had to start all over again.

Hey since someone brought this subject up again, whoever became the moderator?
Personally, I think everyone has moderating qualities, and by that I mean, for one, you just have to moderate yourself.
Secondly, when if 20 people questioned the need for boozing pictures, probably it wouldn't happen again ;-)
just kidding.
