TRange how blackfriday means different things in differenet countries. In USA I beleive that its the last friday shopping day before xmas.
In the UK its the last friday before xmas but realtes to the trouble usually caused in pubs wne clubs by the amount of people going out who dont normally drink
-
It's actually a fairly recent term for a rather old practice - it refers to the first (Fri)day after Thanksgiving, generally the most insane retail shopping day of the year and the "official" start of the holiday shopping season.
If I'm not mistaken, the term originated with the stock market crash in 1929 that initiated the Great Depression...
EDIT: Nope, nevermind, that was a Tuesday...
-
Yeah but as I said black friday in uk relates to the amount of fights, and the hell woking in pubs in clubs either behind the bar or on the door on the last friday before xmas.
Myslef and lots of people I know will not go out drinking on blackfriday beccause its carnage

The carnage is an international phenomenon, just on different calendar days and for different reasons. :-)

Yeah but as I said black friday in uk relates to the amount of fights,
So you have seen news footage of "black friday" in the US then. :-) Pushing, shoving, and in some cases fighting. I was told yesterday by a neighbor that a fist fight broke out over the last digital picture frame that was on sale at the local store.
In the past few years black friday in the US has come to describe the friday following thanksgiving thursday. Many retail stores open as early as 4-5am with lines waiting out side to grab up items with deep dicount prices. Supplies of the most popular items are always very limited of course, so competition can be ugly.
PS.
Here's pretty good example of a tame store opening yesterday morning on youtube. (friday)

As correctly stated before, Black Friday is the name given to the official start of the Christmas retail shopping season on the day after Thanksgiving. Traditionally, Thanksgiving weekend is the busiest shopping weekend of the year.
The "Black" part of the term is to indicate that this is when most retailers will return to operating "in the black," as opposed to "in the red," meaning dismal sales the rest of the year.
I worked retail for many years... sales are FUN

Is it not also the title of a track on Peace Sells, by Megadeth ?
