Genesi is pleased to announce that it has discontinued the sale of the $99 EFIKA 5200B in anticipation of the new EFIKA based on the Freescale MPC5121e which includes the PowerVR MBX 2D/3D graphics engine and audio processing DSP.
The EFIKA 5200B and Open Client (http://www.genesi-usa.com/openclient.php) models can still be ordered through your local reseller, such as Directron in the USA.

Has the new EFIKA's price been anounced yet?

Who cares? The SAM440 End user version goes for sale at the end of the month and looks like much more fun. :-D ......and I'd rather give my cash to a proper company, not one that rips off its own developers like Genesi do.

"pleased to announce"? A discontinuation of a sale could only be pleasing to the people who are losing money because of it. Let me guess, when the Efika2 shows up they'll offer an upgrade plan. For two weeks. Then they'll discontinue the Efika and it's Peg1/Peg2 all over again. (Yeah, I know it lasted longer than two weeks, but I'm still pssd at missing the upgrade.) Then Efika3 will be announced, but something completely different will be developed, and there will never be an Efika3.
:)
Make an new (Efika2) Open Client with dual video, flash drive, and 1Gbps, aggressively market it with Morphos/RDC (or Linux/VNC) as a thin client device for under $400 (affiliates program? viral marketing? free 30-day trials?). There's nothing out there that comes close graphics-wise for that price. Focus on this market. With virtualization and awareness of potential power savings in the spotlight, this could be the killer box. They won't have to offer discounts: They can just drop the price because they're selling so many of them. The rest of us who want it for other reasons will benefit as well.
Why dual-video and 1Gbps? I work at a university-based non-profit research company. The lowest resolution machine we have is 1280x1024 - and that's a CD duplicator that sits unattended in the basement. Most people have 1680x1050, or 1920x1200, or dual 1600x1200. We just sent back a brand new $1500 30" Dell widescreen (2560x1536) just because it didn't have dual inputs (oops!). *All* the machines in question will be virtualized within a year. And by then, we may be running at 3840x2400 or something even more ridiculous. Our network is rated for 10G, but right now we only have 1G switches. This too shall pass. People aren't just running Word anymore.
(Obviously, my Mom won't be buying many of these - sell her the current model at the same price but include mouse, keyboard, monitor, an external DVD/CD-RW drive, and some lite apps - she'll be fine with that.)
(Oh, while your at it, add a line of customizable graphic anti-static skins that appeal to everyone from corporate bigwigs to Japanese teens. And my Mom.)
The more features at a competitive price, the more sales, the longer before truly competitive products show up, and the quicker the price drops (which means more sales, faster introduction of even better products, etc.)

....and then maybe, just maybe they can pay the developers.
-
Efika2 will only be interesting when there's a reasonable shipping rate - not in the scale of the board itself.
-
I guess its a good job I got mine for $99.
Its a cool machine but I'm not doing much with it just yet.
my 9999 cents...

You could throw a bit of beer money to Tigger (http://thenostromo.com/teamaros2/?number=46) for his AROS porting work. :-)

Lord forgive me for being a happy EfIKA owner and Linux developer who doesn't fell ion the slightest bit ripped off. I had a great deal of fun making my EFIKA system, and am continuing to have fun now with it... Must be something in the water around here eh? ;)
The issue is Genesi are a small company. Really small. They can't afford to push out more than one product at a time. They don't have the manpower or resources. In order to progress they have to stop making the old product and introduce the new one shortly after. At least they haven't done what a lot of Amiga oriented companies have done and priced and run themselves out of business because they can't cope.

What's fun in Linux?
-
Why was it discontinued before MorphOS was released for it? MorphOS would have made that board sell well, (if it wasnt selling well already).

I'm going to reply to your obvious troll, even though you are trolling.. but Sam440ep is for a different market. Not everyone wants to pay a significant amount of money for a board just to play with. And conversely, not everyone wants to buy a board thats as limited as the EFIKA. Different markets!

TROLLING, F******G TROLLING!!!

@ hooligan
Fair point, but we will see if it happens. When it's out, I'll buy one. If it's vapour I won't. 'nuff said.
