Because of personal reasons, Ian Chapman, the founder of the Big Book of Amiga Hardware, has given his seven years old compedium in new hands.
Amiga Future is proud to announce to become the new maintainer of the BBoAH. The compendium will be the same as known, but only a few optical adjustments.
In future, the BBoAH will further exist in two languages - english and german.
Unfortunately, Ian Chapman is not able to free the well known URL "http://Amiga-hardware.com" for the BBoAH in the Future. Because of this, the BBoAH ONLY can be reach at http://hardware.amigafuture.de. Please update your bookmarks!
The Amiga Future team also will work on, to open the (licensed) driver downloads page again, which have to be closed since end last year.
NOTICE: For submissions only use the following Email: hardware@amigafuture.de
About Ian:
After nearly 8 years of running the Big Book of Amiga Hardware, I've decided it's time for me to retire from maintaining the site. The reasons are many and varied, but personal. The project started in January 1999 and since then has grown to be what it is today. This wouldn't have been possible without the hundreds of contributors that took their time to help out, many of who sent hundreds of photographs over the years.
Effective from today, The Big Book of Amiga Hardware will be officially maintained by 'Amiga Future' in conjunction with Mario Misic. Mario has maintained the German mirror for several years. They will continue to maintain the site in a similar style with some modifications but will hopefully be able to give the project more time than I could. In addition they hope to translate the entire site into German. Please give them your support.
The new official page is http://hardware.amigafuture.de as I am unable (for practical reasons) to transfer the ownership of the domain. Please note, that this site (http://www.amiga-hardware.com) will still remain available on the web but will not be updated. All submissions should now be sent to the email address hardware@amigafuture.de. Thanks again to everybody who has helped out.
"So long and thanks for all the fish."
Ian.

Hmmmm... Best wishes to Ian - you've provided a great service over the years. Thanks to the AF team for keeping the site going.
I hate to be critical, though, but can we get the old color scheme back? The red and white makes my eyes bleed.

Mega-Thanks Ian and best wishes for the future!
also a big thanks to the new maintainers! this site is too precious!
-
Please keep the site in English and dont convert it onto a German site with occasional English updates.

BBoAH is in german and english

it is great that the site may live on with new maintainer and all i realy like that as it is one of my most visited amiga sites over the time. However "but only a few optical adjustments.":madashell: :madashell: :madashell: the site looks not that good anymore and have taken away the whole feeling that BBoAH please change back. This only my opinion though thank you for the affort...

Good luck to Ian and thanks for providing, supporting, maintaining such an excellent resource for so long.
Hope that whatever those personal reasons are aren't too serious.
All the best.

I,m with Matt_H on the colour scheme :)

I wrote a Firefox search plug-in for BBoAH last year-ish. I don't think it was ever accepted by Mozilla :-( I wonder if it will work if I update it for the new site...
One thing I have already noticed is a LOT of the pages, while primarily English, contain a LOT of German.

when you like, you can translate all pages to english :) we are happy for every helping hands :)

Well, I have to agree... try not to mix German and English on the pages that are supposed to be in English, it doesn't look good.
Though, it is great to see that the site will live on. It would have been a shame if it were to be no more.
Don't forget about the Amiga Hardware Database (http://amiga.resource.cx/) which is a nice alternative to BBoAH. The pictures of the hardware to be found on the Amiga Hardware Database is simply brilliant (it would be nice to see that on BBoAH aswell).
But, I wouldn't like to do without any of the two sites. What either one lacks the other one seems to offer.

That's a great OSS response: "If you don't like it, submit a patch yourself."
Sorry, I don't speak German well enough to translate. And even if I did, it's not my responsibility to do so. Even so, I seem to recall that the original site WAS in English. Check the logs, you'll see that I have contributed quite a bit, so I have put in my time for this wonderful and free resource and feel that I have a position in this.
While the world itself speaks many languages, not all people individually speak many languages. Web developers who want to provide service to the world would do well to remember this. Otherwise, you run the risk of alienating parts of your user- and/or fan-base.

Here is what I found without digging much deeper:
Go to the English site, click on "Recent Updates." It shows up with German in the page. Click on any link and you'll see a page with mixed English and German.
In my case I chose the AdIDE40, and this is the text from the bottom:
Provides a 3.5" IDE Connector which connects into the 68000 socket in A500, A1000 and A2000 series machines. The card must be fitted underneath any accelerator which also occupies the CPU socket. Please note that the card may not work if you have an accelerator in the A2000 CPU Fast Slot. It also contains an autoboot ROM, however there have been reports that this board does not like many Western Digital and IBM Hard Disks.

Hope that helps.

ohh, nice bug.
we fix it
thx

A big hand for Ian - he's done a tremendous job for the past years! BBoAH is the compendium on Amiga hardware: accurate, detailed, but not overdone.
I wish the new maintainers all the best to follow up on him. Please get a native speaker to check up on the English texts - 'Denglish' wouldn't really fit to the quality Ian has treated us with all these years. I'm not a native of course, but I'd be willing to volunteer if nobody else wants to. :inquisitive: ;-)

Thanks, Andreas. I'll make sure to let you know of other problems if/when I find them. As was said here as well, we are all hoping to see this continue on in the spirit under which Ian created and maintained it.

Hi all,
this is Mario Misic, the maintainer of the old german mirror.
I'm responsible for maintaining the BBoAH now.
I'd like to say some words to you.
First, i want to say a big thank you to everyone, who finds a bug and let me know.
I know, that there are still some language bugs.
This was because of the structure of the database, the BBoAH is running on.
We changed most of the language related scripts to present the BBoAH in your prefered language.
Some little changes have to be done at this time and we are working on it.
I want you all to stand by, until the database was filled with the needed fields and also new needed scripts where written too.
Until this work ist done, a little bit of "denglish" is unavoidably :-(
Known bugs:
-Recent Updates
FIXED (completely english now)
-Updates RSS Feed
A new script have to be written to generate a language specific feed
-Site FAQ
only in german at this time
-Submissions
FIXED (completely english now)
-Page Footers
FIXED (followed a link now in german and in english)
- Category headers
Catergory headers within the main frame wehere displayed in german at this time.
New scripts have to be written.
- Hardware page header
FIXED (Connection now prints CONNECTION and not ANSCHLUSS)
Our most important goal is, to keep the BBoAH running in future and provide it with more features, such as additional database requests (Browse by contributor e.g).
I thank you for your patience!
Regards,
Mario Misic
