Title: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: sir_inferno on October 20, 2003, 12:42:06 PM
hi guys!
i bought an amiga 1200 from e-bay.
don't know the stats yet, need to open it up but anyway... I want to connect it to my network, but it ain't have a cd drive, and i don't want to get 500 floppy disks, stick sellotape to all of them  :-D  and then get every little bit of samba onto it  :-P .
But i noticed in the back of the box there was a parralel cable which i've plugged into my laptop and my 1200, and i later discovered a piece of paper saying amiPC etc. but there was no software for the pc, or the amiga for that matter. I e-mailed the guy and he said it was all lost when he moved house. I went to the amiPC website, and i e-mailed them to ask them to send me the software, but they never replied, they are probably defunct now or somthing...
I know the parrallel cable works, cause i made a direct cable connection to my computers with it, so that's ok. I looked on the internet for the software, but i couldn't find it. This is the search for it on google, n.b. the -engine is there cause it kept on coming up with the emulators:google search for it (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22AmiPC%22+download+-engine).

I tried using windows "direct cable connection" but it didn't do anything  :-( but that's probably cause the amiga wasn't expecting anything?!?!

The laptop runs windows ME, but that shouldn't matter, cause if  i have to , i can connect it up to another computer running both XP, and '98. The miag runs kickstart 39.106, and workbench version 40.42            . Please don't make me go through 500 floppied just to get samba on  :-P

teh win.

thanks

Try Amiga Explorer from Cloanto:

http://www.amigaforever.com/amigaexplorer.html

You don`t even need s/w on Amiga side for it to work. The PC stuff will do it for you!

or even AmiTrans:
http://www.ntware.com/workstation/terminal.html

thanks, but isn't that just for serial rather than parrallel?

ah haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa thanks mate, cause amiTRANS didn't accept a parrallel cable, and it also was only one way, which brings me onto my next point, what about the pc part?

All the software you need for the amiga and PC is in that archive...

I bought the commercial package for £10 from wierdscience which includes a parallel cable and an updated version of the software...

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, ok, i managed to run the pc stuff on my pc and it worked, but when i tried reading/running any of the stuff it just didn't happen. You know that enter parameters thing came up, and then it said something like blah blah is not an executable. Gimme some help here!  :-P i mean i'd read the readme but i don't know how to on the amiga, liek to you go into shell and type amiga notepad or somthing?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200

To read text files on the amiga type 'more filename' or 'multiview filename'. e.g. more readme

Also be careful when transferring binary files like executables that you use full 8 bits and when transferred that the exe protect flag is set
e.g. protect filename +e

ummmmmmmmm, i got lots of icons with different names like install, debug, readme, but they all got computer icons, and i got an icon with the hammer thing, called install. i did "more install" and it showed up the script for the isntaller, now like, how do i run it?

config and install, the two icons with the computer and the amiga say your tool cannot be opened when d-clicked, and the other two are the same icons but with drawers and they say the drawers cannot be opened :-?

right well i've had a look at the files in the archive seem to be fine... it should just be a case of copying the things in the directory "PutToPC" to your PC and everything else to the amiga. Then you should just be able to double click on Install... If your copying the files from your PC to you amiga make sure your copying the .info files over too... also I've put up the amigaguide files as HTML on my own webserver (my amiga). They will be there for the next 6 hours or so.... hope thats some help...

oh and before I forget heres the URL :-)

gosh, thanks a lot man, just 1 question, i double click on install, but which one, the one with the colorful icon and the computer on it, or the one with the hammer on it? and what do i type in the box that comes up on the hammer one, cause the one with the icon of the pc doesn't work, it says cannot run your program or somthing... :-?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: Ryu on October 21, 2003, 08:07:58 PM
should just be a case of double clicking on the colourfull PC icon.... assuming you got the filels transfered to the miggy correctly.... whats the hammer icon called?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: sir_inferno on October 21, 2003, 08:44:12 PM
in answer to you're question, it's called 'install'.

The comp icon is called 'install~1'.

But when i double click the 'install~1' comp icon, it goes something like "Your executable cannot be run".

and on the guide thing in said the files had to be "installed" using an installer  :-?

and it told me to download from here: ftp://ftp.luth.se/
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: Ryu on October 21, 2003, 09:36:45 PM
aha thats it then... the filenames have been truncated by windows....

rename install~1 to install.info

then it should run... though anything with a "~" in it is incorrect... the filenames must match the filenames the guide says you should have... stupid old 8+3 format...

 :-?  :-?  :-?  :-?  :-?  :-(  :-?  :-?  :-?  :-?  :-?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: Ryu on October 21, 2003, 11:21:28 PM
right i'll take you through the manual install process then... seems it might be easier :)

you will need to show all files on the amiga side, you can do this by pressing down the right mouse button to get the menu up, and goto window and then show, all files...

heres the step by step guide:

1. copy everything from the c directory to your C: directory (in your workbench partition (show all files) c)

2. copy PC2AmParallel.device from the devs directory to your Devs: (found in workbench:devs/)

3. copy everything from l to your l directory (again workbench show all l)

4. copy the igs.library from the libs directory to your libs: (workbench:libs/)

5. right now ive gone to the liberty of doing this bit for you (configuring it) ive assumed your using a standard parallel laplink cable so copy this (http://www.amiga.kicks-ass.org/PC) file and this (http://www.amiga.kicks-ass.org/PC.info) one to somewhere, make sure you put them both in the same place the PC.info file is the con for the PC file...

that should be it... now run the program on the PC then double click on the PC file you downloaded from me... and you should get a PC icon appear on your workbench, open it (double click) and you should hopefully see your windows drives there (all labelled C,D etc)

ummmmmmm, i'm using the official Ami2PC cable, isn't that a bi-directional one?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: Ryu on October 22, 2003, 11:42:33 AM
well i dont know, it might be.... anyway you can easily change it by editing the PC file....

I dont know I help and all you do is complain :-)
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: sir_inferno on October 22, 2003, 06:33:00 PM
 well this ain't a complaint, this is a question (like all the others  :-) )

am i correct in saying that all the files without .info are icons and so that's why they don't show up on my amiga workbench when i select all files?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: Ryu on October 22, 2003, 07:42:59 PM
no... all .info files are icons... all other files are not icons.... say you have a file called spoon, then spoon.info would be the icon for spoon... now if you had a program called fork but there was no fork.info then you can safely say fork doesnt have an icon and therefore wont be visible usually. To be able to view fork and any other files with no icons you would have to "show all" like I described in a post above ^^^^. I hope that helps some... im getting towards the limits of my help here :-)
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: sir_inferno on October 22, 2003, 10:16:53 PM
ahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa rite, so to view the file correctly, you have to have the info set up correctly, and because windows truncuated the file names, the .info was set up wrong, so the file was set up wrong... :-) is that correct?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: Ryu on October 22, 2003, 11:07:50 PM
that is what i said ages ago. I feel I have helped enough now so even a real dummy could do it :-)

Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: sir_inferno on October 23, 2003, 03:25:52 PM
finished my cornetto, now to work  :-)

i couldn't download you're files, mainly because i didn't have time, and secondly, cause internet explorer, nor getright acknowledged the file without an extension, so it was trying to download the folder... so maybe if you renamed it to anything... but besides that...

I follwed you're instructions, first time i think  ;-)  :-D and i managed to get a connection, by what i mean i ran the config file on the pc and then i ran "PC2AMIGA.exe", and it went:

amiga<-->pc transfferrer
Dos 7.0+ detected, using long filenames.
B4 it gave me the general error of "there could be one of four problems".

But nothing appeared to happen on the amiga, (probably cause the amiga has not been configured nor has it got anything to run) so i ran the file on the pc: PC2AMRES.exe it says this:

amiga<-->pc transfferrer
Dos 7.0+ detected, using long filenames.
Resident Installed

and in a big box of stars, it then says:

Microsoft Windows Program pop-up support

Your pop-up program is ready to run. When you have finished, press ctrl+c to exit this program and return to windows.

How about some1 other than the kind ryu gives me an answer?  :-P  :-D  :-P

P.S. does uppercase and lowercase matter for the files that i put on the amiga that windows truncuated?

amigaos isnt case sensetive i dont think, but its always good to use case :-) as for the PC... im not sure of, its slightly different in the commercial package i use, just has a config and a server, both are DOS programs...

anyway the files are still there for you to get... oh and you must run the PC side first then the amiga... if you cant get my files its dead easy to run the amiga config and follow the steps, anything you dont understand just click next, all you should need to do is tell it to use parallel and the special 8 wire if thats what you have.

oh and why dont you just shift click on my links to save as rather than try to view..... or right click, save as or whatever?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: sir_inferno on October 23, 2003, 07:10:59 PM
ummmmmmmmm, since i had to manual install because it didn't want to run installer, i thought you might have guessed that config didn't run either, so...

1.) where do i put the pc and pc.info?
2.) what do i run on the amiga side? and since my files are "broken"!?!?!? what do i do if i can't?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: Ryu on October 23, 2003, 09:07:29 PM
yeah I had figured that....

I had already said in a previous post you can put PC and PC.info anywhere you like, so long as their kept together... I have it directly in my workench partition so all I have to do is open workbench and double click on PC to mount the network. If it wont n run then well your screwed cos I dont know what to do....
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: sir_inferno on October 24, 2003, 12:37:29 PM
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, windows truncuated the file names, again, so i copied them over, now could i just have the name of the file (that i downloaded from you...)

and then do i double click on that to do the link?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: sir_inferno on October 24, 2003, 01:07:16 PM
anyway, think about it, if you keep on helping an amiga novice, i.e. some1 who only knew how to put things into an amiga drive and make the games work  :-D  oh and playing mods and watching pictures, then eventually you'll get to like cult member or somthing  :-)
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: Ryu on October 24, 2003, 01:56:56 PM
im sure ive already said the files you got from me are called PC and PC.info... they together (.info being the icon) are the moutfile for the network.... the moutfile contains the configuration. Stick them both ANYWHERE on your HDD, both in the SAME location, then DOUBLE CLICK on the PC icon once the PC side of the network is running, and it should work... if it doesnt then I dont know... it should be setup fine if youve followed my simple step by step instructions... The only way I can help further is if i drove down and did it myself.....
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: sir_inferno on October 24, 2003, 02:25:06 PM
nope, you've helped enough  :-)

but i just need to know the name of the Pc icon thing, cause mine is all mucked up... i.e. i'ts name is like PC2AG~1

all i need to know is the original name, is it just pc?
Title: Re: connecting via amiPC to a 1200
Post by: Ryu on October 24, 2003, 02:57:58 PM
oh FFS have i not told you its called PC a million times alread... plus im quite sure in the guide, which i converted for you gives you a list of all the files you should have and there names... im sure its not that hard to work out there full names from the truncated names using the guide....

Post by: sir_inferno on October 25, 2003, 10:30:59 AM
ummm, ok i've bugged you enough, i'll re-read the guide, then re-read it, then download some more files, shove them somewhere, and hope it works, thanks anyway.
