Hello,
I was wondering, what is the best Quake port for the PPC Amiga, as i won a Blizzard PPC! I already own the Clickboom original Quake for the 060 but i want PPC speed! :-)
Regards,
-
The port from Frank Wille http://devnull.owl.de/~frank/
And there are two GL versions somehwere, which are a bit buggy, but I
can't find the URL atm.

:-D we want quake world GL :-D
-
quake world GL has been on amiga since forever , i use it alot still.
anyway the best quake port on amigappc, is "BLITZ QUAKE!" that is soooooo cool and sooooooooo fast!
try it , btw it wont work on bvision so get that mediator and voodoo3 :D
cheers

Thanks for the reply guys. I tried out QuakeWos and that was a big improvement indeed, both graphics and speed. Current problem is i cant get the CD audio going, but i think i can fix this problem. If not, i'll post again! :-) Thanks again guys!

well then you should checkout BLITZ QUAKE! (aminet) ...

Well if you tell us how to make it work on our BVisions, then we will check out BlitzQuake ;)
As i recall cd audio was setup via settting the devicec/unit in an env setting. It should all be in the suppliedd docs of whatever port you use.

set the env variables env:quake1/cd_device and env:quake1/cd_unit according to your settings.

set the env variables env:quake1/cd_device and env:quake1/cd_unit according to your settings.
How would i do this?! Would i do this in the tooltypes section or a a command line in shell when starting up QuakeWos, same with the other options, ie: mem, etc.

ENV variables are settings or data that the entire system has access to, you don't specify it when you start Quake, but at some point before using the SetEnv command in a Shell window.
e.g.
SetEnv ENV:quake1/cd_unit 0 sets the quake1/cd_unit variable to 0.
If you open the ENV: directory in Workbench or DOpus, etc, you'll see there's a quake1 directory and a file in it called cd_unit. That's just a text file containing '0'.
That's how Environment Variables work. Everything in ENV: is lost when you reboot, however you can save it to ENVARC:, and the system will restore it on boot-up.
Sounds familiar? This is the same system used for the 'Save' and 'Use' options in Workbench Preferences. If you Save, the data gets written to ENV: and ENVARC:, if you choose 'Use', the data just gets stored in 'ENV:' (which is usually on the RAM disk.)
So if you wanted to set these variables permanently:
SetEnv ENVARC:quake1/cd_unit 0 sets the quake1/cd_unit variable to 0.
Hope that helps you :-)

@that_punk_guy,
Thanks very much for that information. I will try that. Is that the same for the other options?
Regards,
-
Yeah, you'll have to do:
setenv ENV:quake1/cd_device cd.device
setenv ENVARC:quake1/cd_device cd.device
(replacing cd.device with whatever cd device you use) too. I haven't used Quake, so there might also be other options you can set this way, but I don't know about them :-)

Yeah, but thats just for the CD device, i am on about the memory limit, etc.

Is it possible to play PC<->Amiga users vice versa on multiplayer? :-?

Yeah. Amiga Quake players can beat up their PC, MAC or Acorn buddies AFAIK!
-
yep i used to play quakeworld for one of the top uk teams in the european leagues and there was a uk amiga player who used to go on the practise servers and i know a couple of mac players as well. Always felt sorry for them though with their 20fps and 200ms ping as i pranced along on 77fps solid regardless of the action and 25ms ping due to adsl :)
i finally have a working 1200 again, well its in bits on my lounge floor but it works enough to play xtreme racing! may have to try amiga quake for a laugh at some point once i get a cd drive plugged back into it.
-
Quake PPC now works with the CD ROM drive. So i can listen to the CD audio! :-) I don't know all this works but at least it does! Thanks guys for the help.

Hi!
BTW: With Martin McKenzies QuakeGui it is also
possible to set the ENV Stuff using a GUI. Should be on Aminet I think...
