Title: #### Fusion!!
Post by: Matt_H on October 17, 2003, 12:04:39 AM
Crashed immediately upon starting the emulation and now my DH2 is considered a write off and DH1 is full of checksum errors. Fusion itself is on DH2. Nothing I can do now except reformat and restore from backup. Grrrrrrrr!  :-x

Anyone else have any problems similar or know of a better solution?

Ironically, ShapeShifter worked perfectly with the same settings.

My sincerest sympathies, That happen to me too! That is why I give a warning on the website.  (I am assuming that you tried fusion after having visited my new website.)

Mac On Amiga (http://maconamiga.amigaworld.net)

In short, if you are gonna use fusion, use a second hard drive. or save your hard drive partition info before you start.
Still, I would strongly advise on the former.

I'd actually had it installed before, but never rebuilt the Mac partition after I bought a new hard drive.

It's bombed out on me before without trashing drives...

Did you have a mac partition open and mounted on the Amiga side when it happened? I'm convinced that's the trojan that causes the Hard drive to rip itself to shreds.

I'm very careful now, when I transfer stuff from the mac side to the amiga (or vise versa) I always shut down the mounted mac partition on the Amiga side)

So far I have had fusion running for over 4 months now with no problems, then again I have it on a second hard drive too, so I'm not too worried.

Is it worth all that effort? You kidding? yes! there are some great goodies available on the Mac side!

Nope. The partition was not mounted on the Amiga side. Good thing the Workbench partition wasn't damaged, or I'd have a useless hulk under my desk.

Lesson to all: Back up your stuff.

@ Matt_H:

I feel your pain. I lost a small HD I'd formatted as a Mac partition. Well, not so much lost the HD, just the accumulated data on it. Silly me couldn't figure out how to back the silly thing up, since Toast didn't like running emulated.

@Mikey_C:

Tell me, O Inspirer of Mac Emulation, what AmigaOS flavor are you using when you run Fusion? It used to run fine under OS 3.1, then gave me some problems under OS 3.5 (lost the HD then), and refuses to run properly at all under OS 3.9.

ShapeShifter? I never could get that thing to work at anywhere near the speed of Fusion (under OS 3.1) or even at all (under OS 3.5+).

Oh yeah, a warning: BEWARE!! Mac HFS has got to be the first ever self-destructive filesystem I've ever seen. The REAL challenge of Mac emulation is seeing how long before the filesystem eats itself. Makes me wonder if Apple designed it like that intentionally. On another note, forks suck. I hate them with a passion.

What size HD were you using? Do not use partitons over the 4Gb limit!

Hello Peter!

Nice to see you on here :)
Hope that I have done your old Fusion FAQ and setup some justice at it's new home. (I will add full link to your site under "About" later on.)

Personally, I'm using a 4.3gb drive, of which I'm using about a meg in total split into 3 parts.

The only thing I'm desperately trying to find for download is Marathon (the original) that is such a great game.

I may have that problem as we speak. :-( Basilisk 2 crashed once about a month ago and i got a checksum error in my Apple Mac partition and my Workbench partition. Both of these partitions repaired themselves but i still get some trouble sometimes from the Workbench partition. Anyway, if this problem persists, i will have no choice but to reformat the partition or the whole HD. Thankfully though, i have backed up all my important goodies! :-)

@Mikey_C

Great Mac emu site you have there! Very nice indeed! :-) Did you have Fusion available as a download once?! If you don't mind me asking. Also would you have a "spare" copy of Microsoft Office for Mac for me to buy! Sorry! That last one was cheeky! Oh yeah, and is Basilisk really that bad?

Regards,

Hey No one is forcing you! :-)

Personally I think it's worth the little effort as it opens up a whole new arena of software :-)

In my previous incarnation of Mac emulation, I had both ShapeShifter and Fusion working flawlessly. I used Fusion because it was faster. I also used to have the Mac drive permanently mounted Via CrossMAC. I didn't do that this time. After a crash then, I'd get a CrossMAC error message about invalidation but a soft reset would clear that right up. Maybe CrossMAC serves as a sort of buffer? I'd look into it, but ####! The files are on my trashed DH2!

This time, I had just gotten MacOS reinstalled under ShapeShifter when I decided to switch over to Fusion for speed. Big mistake. Yes, the Mac partition is above 4Gb, but it also was before. And I'm running 3.9. Go figure.

@ Lempkee: What video driver are you using for speed in ShapeShifter? Built-in CGX is pretty weak...
