We regret to inform you all that the AmigaEast Show May 28-29 2005 has been cancelled. Many people and companies had expressed interest in the show, but the money did not come in to support the $6000 needed to run the show.
As a result of not being able to put the additional $2500 prepayment the time slot was sold to another event in the hotel. All the work and logistics had been done, but too little money came in. There is still a possibility one could happen at the end of the year but it looks as though I would need to front most of the money myself. Anyone who gave a credit card # in to order tickets for the show or banquet have not been charged anything and any checks have not been cashed and will be disposed of properly. I would still like to look forward to doing another show in the northeast of the US and am open to ideas.

$6000 for having a place for a show seems to be a huge amount of money to raise.
Maybe someone could help you with finding a cheaper or even better, a free place.
Was it in NYC ? If so, I do not think it is very convenient for people not living in town.
-
I think a cheaper place would be in order. It is
sad to see all the hard work go to waste.

$6000!! Wow!,
Next time lets just have it at my place for free :-D
-
$6K ?
Bugger....
You could fly over and attend Big Bash for less than that !!
Sad news though.. Is there no way you can find a cheaper hall ?
The hall we use for Big Bash (http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/the1dogzbollox/detail?.dir=175e&.dnm=8f72.jpg&.src=ph) is £12 per hour and is close enough to my home to run a wireless adsl link.
surely you could hire a community hall for a few hours ?

:-(
This is sad to hear. I was all set to go.

The problem is that NYC is an incredibly expensive place, not only to live, but to do anything like put on a show. They're used to MUCH larger people putting on shows that don't blink at $6,000 for a show.
It's similar to the fact that a million dollars in NYC might buy you a medium, well stocked apartment but you could buy a 4000 square foot house here in Huntsville for 300k.
Toss in the fact that the community interested in spending money to attend (usually from long distances) is shrinking and I wouldn't bet that Amiwest itself will last a couple more years.
Now, a show in the middle of the US, say Saint Louis or Denver? Much closer to everyone outside of New York, and it would be much cheaper to put on. I think Kermit had the right idea by putting on a "cross-platform" show a couple of years ago, but the problem is that the cost of supporting multiple platforms in a show drives up the cost of the show itself. Maybe. Dunno.
Years ago, I thought of putting on a show here in Huntsville, but it never really took off due to a number of factors, including location.

What about the St. Louis shows? Those were very central geographically. It'd be nice to get those going again.
If I can get off of work, I'll try to make it out to AmiWest for the first time this year...
-
How about West Chester, PA as a venue, the former home of C= ? I'm sure that there was a meeting hall somewhere in the area there that could have hosted the gig?
-
How about moving it up state?
-
Has the idea of the Philly area, of Valley Forge been talked about? Commodore used to hold shows in both places that worked out rather well. Granted that was a long time ago.
-
Seems to me the answer is to see about non-profits that would let their property be used for cheap, or even free.
Also, i think it'd be cool to not have it IN NYC, but nearish. Maybe Penn, NJ, or "upstate" NYS (New Yorl State).
I like the West Chester idea. I bet the town officials would be pleased to host it.
When is the next St. Louis show anyway?
-
I guess that whole "central location" thing just went over everyone's head... :)

When is the next St. Louis show anyway?
Unfortunately, Bob Scharp stopped hosting the Saint Louis show about 4 years ago (2001 was, I believe the last one). The other show I truly miss is the Columbus show (in Ohio). It was a great deal of fun.
Amiwest in Sacramento is a fine show, but it too is simply in the wrong part of the country to be accessible by most American Amiga users. The last time I went, airfare from Huntsville was incredibly expensive.
What we need is a real parent company that actually commits to putting on a show or at least being a major sponsor the way that Gateway did with Saint Louis.

I agree! Bring back the show to St. Louis. It was only a few hours for me to drive there and enjoyed every minute of it when I got there....except for McDonald's terrible Sunday morning service (they got swamped with a lot of people, they didn't even have a drive-thru!). Heh, don't know if anyone remembered me at the St. Louis show back in 2001, but I was there, I laughed, I bought too many things as I wasn't supposed to have, but I had fun! I even had gotten to see Dave Haynie in person as well as Sabrina-Online's artist Eric Schwartz and our retired Petro Tyschtschenko! :-)
Or I could name a few places in Chicagoland to suggest... *hint* *hint* :-D

While I know it's not a replacement for an entire Amiga event, you could always get a few tables at the East Coast Gaming Expo and show your Amiga love there.
Tables are cheap at $15 and we're expecting well over 1,000 people this year.

Chicago. Not central. Central? Saint Louis or Denver.

I've never actually gone to a show, but I always enjoyed the St. Louis shows, because I knew I could attend...and I always took the weekend off...and then something always came up, but even so....
would be nice to miss shows closer to home :-)
