Has anyone setup a network between an Amiga
and a PC ??
What cards did you use and how does it work??

Many networks their PC with their Amiga.
The usual setup is:
PCMCIA network card, about $50. Plugs into A1200. You may need a PCMCIA2/3 converter which is easy to get hold of (dunno the specifics).
PCI network card, about $15. For PC, first check so it's not already a mobo feature.
If you are going to network more than two computers, then you need a hub(?).
Software:
MiamiDeluxe or Samba for the Amiga
??? or Samba for the PC.
Other posters will fill in the gaps I guess. You can also use null-modem, but most people scrap that idea pretty quick when they realize how much better networking is (both easier and faster).

PCMCIA network card, about $50.
My 100mbit card was 5 eur.
Anyway, the setting up a network between amiga and pc is like any system. Ethernet card, TCP/IP stack, setting up the networking parameters. Done.

So I can use an Ethernet card from Software hut??
My son says he can get the PC card with HUB
software at CompUSA for just a few bucks.
And these machines will talk to each other
with no problems ??
I have an A3000d and a PC 350mhz.

Get an X-surf2 ethernet card for your amiga.
What OS are your running, btw?

I have an A1200 and I was given for free a 3Com EtherLink card model 3c589c :-D ! I asked the same thing and people said to me that it is a pain in the arse to set your Amiga to access a LAN.
In my work we have a LAN and plenty of windoze/linux gurus. I decided to surprise them by setting up my miggy to access the LAN. I downloaded the 3c589 drivers from aminet and I have Miami installed. I was told that all I will do with the current software will be to be able to ping the migy and nothing else :-x ! I wonder if this is true, or Miami will allow me to access the web through my miggy.

I'm running an A3000 w/ WarpEngine 040-40 mhz,
MultiFace I/O , CyberVision64, 80 megs ram, OS 3.9.
My PC is a basic box Pentium 350 mhz
Sooo ... is a network more trouble than its worth ??

Miami only supplies the TCP/IP-stack .. If you just install that, then yes, about the most exciting thing you can do is ping back and forth.. (there's also a telnet client with Miami, so you can connect to servers running the telnet daemon).
If you want to browse the web, get IBrowse or Voyager.

When it comes to just setting up a TCP/IP connection for the purpose of accessing the internet, you should have no problems once you get a network card for what ever Amiga model you own. You'll need a TCP-IP stack for this, something Miami would do.
Also, I recommend using a hardware router that connects directly to the internet. Makes things easier I think. I use the Lynksys 4 port router and haven't had any problems with it. The router also adds a decent NAT firewall which will make your LAN stealth to the outside world, unless you decide to open up some ports.
If you want to setup file sharing between Amiga and PC, that too is possible and I have done it between my A4000 and WinXP box. It works quite well actually, I can browse my Amiga directories on WinXP just like any other network drive. To do it, you'll need to get a hold of Samba for the Amiga, which is freeware. There should be instructions included with Samba, so you might wanna get that now and take a look to see what's required in the setup (can't remember off hand).
If you want to do printer sharing, well, I can't help you there... If I remember correctly, printer sharing wasn't implemented (or was buggy) in the Amiga version of samba. It's possible it has been fixed.
Good luck!

My PC (WinXP) has an ADSL connection to internet and is also networked to Amiga (I have two ethernet cards on th PC). I use X-Surf2 on Amiga 4000 with Miami Deluxe and Samba. PC and Amiga can share resources and access them in either direction without problem (no other software is needed on PC). Furthermore I can access internet simultaneously from Amiga and from PC. However I had to install a freeware proxy on the PC (no further harware needed).
Samba configuration is a little bit tricky, but if you follow the docs you should have no problem. You also have to set up the TCP for the Amiga<->PC LAN.
The connection to internet from Amiga is as fast as that on the PC!!! ;-)

Didn't the built in NAT work for you? (internet connection sharing)

I tried with ICS, but I couldn't make it work properly, so it was a lot easier using a proxy. :-D

Yer but if you've got a busy network, you'll want a switch, which apparantly are traditionaly more expensive because more than one pair of computers can use the switch at once where as only one pair of computers can use the hub at once, as far as i know.
If you need a switch/hub go to ebay! I got my from there for about $50-$60 dollars for an 8 port 10/100 switch!
Bargin!

So you guys suggest the following:
-Amiga with a network card
-Miami
-IBrowse
(so far I can just access the web with my miggy through the LAN, right?)
-Samba
(To share resources)
Am I correct?

You are correct. ;-)

It's a little different..
A hub simply repeats to every port what any machine sends.. This results in a lot of collisions -> slower network.
A switch on the other hand sends the data only to the destination machine. If it can't figure out who gets it, then it's broadcast to everyone.
You might want to check out This FAQ I quickly googled up (http://www.faqs.org/faqs/LANs/ethernet-faq/)

I'm looking at doing this too.
Check out this page:

for some instructions on setting up samba.
