Awesome. It's nice to see regular progress made available. Cheers to the development team.

Unfortunately, my system is still extremely crash-happy. I understand it's beta software, so some instability is to be expected, but I'm wondering if anyone else is having trouble? I just hope my board isn't damaged...

If you are experiencing random crashes, it is most likely an incorrect voltage setting or heat related.

OS 4 is quite stable in the meanwhile.

@ HyperionMP

Linux is stable, however.

Well, I'm sending the board in for the ethernet/DMA patch in a short while anyway, I'll have them check everything else.

OS 4 does not yet disable the CPU when idle. I don't know if Linux does that, but it makes the CPU run hotter than it needs to be. There is the beginning of dynamic power management, but real power management will come in a later update.

Stability issues are almost exclusively caused by wrong voltage settings. Refer to this (http://www.intuitionbase.com/static.php?section=notes) article by Stépane Guillard that sums it up pretty nicely.

I am a little confused - has Amiga OS4 been released?

Does it work on BlizzardPPC 1200's?

Finally - I was wondering - I think a long while back that I paid for some kind of coupon through Amiga Inc. towards OS4. Are those still valid?

@ Rogue

Some quick research shows that my VCORE is one setting too low (XPC7451RX800RE should be 1.64, mine is at 1.59). However, in the example in the linked article, the VCORE is intentionally set lower than suggested due to heat issues. Would such a small discrepancy cause such problems as I have?

Well, I'll have my dealer give everything a checkup when I send it in. I'll try to get a better cooler installed too - the only thing I've done to improve the system was to replace the thermal pad with thermal compound.

Cheers, and thanks for the help.

Matt_H:

Yes all Vcore's was set lower due to heat problems but you can get a better cooler indeed , well you should and at the same time get the vcore adjusted to the correct number.

It caused alot of problems here indeed with the voltage you use atm.

anyway dont attempt to do this on your own, make your dealer fix it incase of something goes wrong.

Best of luck on that and btw i have no problems here of staying up and running tons of {bleep} for days and days ....weeks is hard for me as i need to update my os regulary :-)

cheers

No stability problems here (touch wood) either.

When I ordered my A1 G4-XE ( from Eyetech) I also ordered a better heatsink to go with it.

Its still tiny in comparison to pc heatsinks but apparently larger than then "standard" issue.

Freescale lists a specific VCORE in their documentation, and says that the voltage should be within 50 mV. 1.59 should be within that limit still, but at the lower limit.

We encountered may stability issues with incorrectly set VCORE in the past, so I would suggest to raise the VCORE to the correct value, but make absolutely sure that you have adequate cooling...

Edit: Also, make sure that you clock it at 800 MHz. It's a genuine 800 MHz CPU, but I've heard of a lot of people that clocked theirs at 933 MHz ...

@Matt_H

I would also like to know if you have a Catweasel in your system. If you do, remove it and see if it gets better.

@amiga2000
The prerelease it out since time :-) It was free for EarlyBirds. Now if you buy an A1 (any also a Micro) you get OS4 prerelease until the final release.

@Matt_H
OS4 is rocks solid, sometimes i don't reboot my A1 for days :-) So if you have stability issue it is a vcore or installation problem. have you got the first update installed? Check Intuition base or AW.net (it is the official AmigaOne webportal) to find many threads about vcore. I have a 1,74 for my 1000Mhz G4.

@all
Enjoy the update! :-D

@MattH

Where did you get the (AFAIK incorrect) information that your CPU is meant to run at 1.64?

DO NOT raise it, because it is not meant to run at 1.64, it's meant to run at 1.6V, so 1.59V is fine.

Your CPU fan is probably inadequate though (I bet you have the "Sunon" cooler).

Regards.

@ reflect

It was the Catweasel! I don't believe it! The system has been very stable ever since I took it out. Some programs still crash, but the random lockups are gone.

I'll have the dealer check out the cooler and VCORE. Hopefuily that will solve the few remaining problems.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Argh, that problem again...

Luckily, we found the reason (a bug in Exec, I have to admit :-( ), and we're currently testing that.

We'll probably offer yet another update that will fix that in the course of January.

Unfortunately not... I haven't been able to find it, since the bug is really hard to reproduce here... Sometimes, it happens after a minute, sometimes it happens after an hour...

Ah, ok... I hope you can soon solve the thing.

For now thanks for the update and for your work.

There are two main partitions on my AmigaOne G4-XE system - Workbench and Programs.  Also have two small ones for browser caches and swap space (not yet in use of course).  I downloaded and installed this update last night.  At the end of it, the installer asks you if you want to reboot now or later.  Well, I selected now, which it did immediately.  However, it's apparently not a clean reboot because it invalidated my Programs partition.  My system refused to completely boot up after that.  I had to boot up with my Dev-PR Update #1 CD in order to get it to validate the partition.  Then I was able to boot up normally again.
