i'm posting this on it right now!

Very nice,  a automated install, that still  uses my old settings.

The Zip-Archiv support has been dropped with this release.
Just select in the installer "Basic" instead of "Complete".

Does this public beta business mean that some time in the future, UAE will be commercial?

WinUAE is a derivative work of UAE, which is licensed under the GPL, so WinUAE can't be commercial in the closed source sense. However, the current maintainer could start charging for binaries as long as the source code is made available. Such a move would be quite atypical for an open source project such as this. Even if that did happen, there's nothing to prevent someone like me from freely distributing binaries.

Obviously, there are ways to work around GPL restrictions, but let's hope Toni, et al leaves things the way they are.

I just cannot put into words how excellent WinUAE has become over the last year or so, and how much the application has matured. Stability and compatibility are now almost perfect, A500 mode particularly, and the updated GUI is excellent too. I particlarly like the tooltips introduced in this new version. Huge thanks to Toni for all the hard work put into WinUAE!

I'm not too familiar with the GPL license, but if people made their own binaries for WinUAE, would they be able to use Toni's GUI? I know WinUAE is based on UAE, but because the GUI is just a front-end for the UAE code, is it covered by the GPL license? Just curious!

Steve.

Yes, this release is very nice. It has excellent mouse handling and using it with a tablet is fun. Great work.

It's not just a front-end, it's linked with the binary. WinUAE also messes with lot of the UAE code itself. It's all covered by GPL.

Piru's right. Toni would have to decouple the GUI from WinUAE and release a new version of the GUI using both a GPL license and a separate closed source license. Obviously, this wouldn't accomplish the closed source goal. It would only give Toni the ability to separately license the GUI source code for use in a wholey separate closed source project. But like Piru said, WinUAE is much, much more than a GUI for UAE.

Not as far as I know.  I think in this case, it means it's a beta release toward WinUAE 1.0.  It's just referring to the maturity level of the code, and getting us used to WinUAE reaching version 1.0 soon.  :-)

Well no, WinUAE is still covered by GPL.  But you are not buying WinUAE but Roms, OS, Other Amiga Apps, Videos which are on there.

I can see why you would say that but it isn't correct.

The best just keeps getting better!

I am using this on my desktop PC with little or no problems. Just out of curiosity, I loaded it on my laptop and I'm seeing some weird behavior with RAM allocation. Sometimes I do not have the ability to select more than 32MB Z3 fast RAM (I was able to switch to 128MB and save my configuration when it worked). Also, the available amount drops when I increase the RTG RAM. This is probably normal for machines with tight resources, but strange to see on a laptop with 2GB RAM and a 32MB video adapter.

I will try downgrading to the previous WinUAE and see what happens.
