Title: Amiga.org domain sold
Post by: JamesR on April 01, 2004, 05:03:15 PM
Wayne Hunt, owner of the Amiga.org domain for nearly a decade, announced today that he has sold the domain to a pro-lesbian non-profit organization named Corazón de Amiga, Incorporated based out of Mexico City. The domain will officially switch over as of May 1st.

"They came to me with a decent offer and I took it," says Hunt, "It's just diminishing returns; the smaller the Amiga community gets the more they bicker and squabble about nonsense. The companies involved with the Amiga have proved they have no prayer of saving the platform - I'm just done."
Happy April Fool's Day 2004 from the staff and crew of Amiga.org!
"Also, you must admit there are more lesbians than Amiga users."

This is a great day for Amiga!!!

I welcome our new Sapphic friends to the Amiga community, and hope they will quickly set up webcams for us. Uh, so we can see the new additions to our flock, I mean.

The contract contains a 12 month non-compete clause, so aside from paying off all the bills that have been a direct result of this site, I'll be taking a bit of a vacation.  If, after a year, there's still an Amiga community left, we'll examine the possibilities at that time.

I'm just very happy that the domain itself will go to good use.

Just to be absolutely clear, Corazón de Amiga (very loosely translated -- since I don't speak Spanish -- "Heart of the Girlfriend") have nothing to do with the Amiga computer whatsoever.

It is an official support organization that provides advice, counseling, and resources to the Mexican Lesbian community.

I don't blame you Wayne. As much as I hate to see this site go, there is no way you could turn down that offer! As most will remember this lesbian group has been persuing Amiga.org domain for years and they finally put their money where their mouth is.

About time for a new car in the hunt family? :-)

Sorry for the timing, but it's no joke.  I find myself without a job, in debt, and a good offer was made and accepted.  I suppose everyone would take this more seriously if I waited until tomorrow, but the contract states that we announce it one full month ahead of time to allow time for an adjustment, which means I needed to announce it today.

Yeah, don't be crass.  Lesbians are people too.  We should all be donating whatever Amiga equipment we can spare to them - this could end up being the biggest influx of new Amiga people in 10 years.

What if someone at Hyperion created a few pro lesbian desktop themes for OS4?  This could really make a difference.

Hi to all,

If this is a hoax, nice one guys, you got me!
If not, it's a sad day indeed for the community, my best wishes to all at Amiga.org. :-(

Anyway, to the point of this post: I just looked at the WHOIS info for the site and found the following info:
Quote
Domain Name:AMIGA.ORG
Created On:26-Apr-1995 04:00:00 UTC
Last Updated On:09-Jan-2004 21:51:16 UTC
Expiration Date:27-Apr-2004 04:00:00 UTC

Note the 'Expiration Date' of 27th April, this seems to lend weight to the fact it has been sold.

But I'm left asking a couple of questions:

Why update the site to XOOPS 2 then sell it a month or two later? Surely it would have been better to save the hassle, unless amiga.org will carry on with a new domain?

Just my two cents!

Cheers,
Graham C

Heh,
Since this site will go down anywho, and basically probably wont come back, then I might as well say whatever I can.

Yea, i guess its kinda sucks that amiga.org has to go, but then again, I wont miss it. Everytime I would try to post information to users and basically stating that amigaworld.net may be an alternative, it gets moderated. I didnt flame nobody, nor did I say Amiga.org sucked, but still got moderated. So due to that, i have quit this site long ago. So its disappearance wont matter.

So why be sorry or whine about it going? Just find another Amiga website where we can still post.

Whatever Wayne does, let him be. Just dont expect me to be returning after that years time.

Good luck Wayne  :pint:

I didn't really belong to any of the other Amiga forums (other than lurking) so this seems so final.

Oh well, of to the AROS forums I guess.

Well...i dont know what to think at this moment...
This "Alekandra" Manuela Maricruz...(and i say "Alekandra", because such a name doesnt exist in spanish, it is Alejandra.
Her mail is full of wrong spanish. I mean, it has no sense the way she writes. For sure, the person who wrote that is not a native spanish tongue person. Othwerwise, why to write it in spanish, when this site is in english? Who will be understanding this besides me? Only people from Mexico, Spain and other spanish countries.
But again, it is so badly written...
I still cant believe its true...all of this...Please please..let it be a very bad joke, i want to awake tomorrow and see things "normally"...

just did a quick Google search for "Corazón de Amiga" with the quotes for an exact match and came up with:

Well directly translated it means "Heart of Amiga". Which makes no sense. If it was Spanish, surely "Amiga" would translate to something else...

I think this prank definately deserves an award, everyone who fell for it donate some money to the kitty, anyone?

I held off commenting for a while because I could just smell a ruse but I have to admit come the third day I was starting to doubt myself.

Still at least I never made any silly comment. :-P

> April fools rocks

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) threw a great April fool once. It was long before my time, when everything still was sent in black and white, two or three years before the first colour broadcast (probably in the late sixties). It was late in the evening and the channel hostess was to announce a program, when she told everyone this: "Turn of all lights in your home, and this broadcast will appear in colour.". And, around in the thousand homes, people actually believed her and switched off all their lights. A true classic Norwegian April fool is when the Wine Monopoly (state owned/controlled liquor stores) tells the news papers that they have a leakage, and that people must come and help them get rid of all the alcohol. People falls for it and shows up in crowds with buckets and milk pails...

The trouble is not enough people look at the adverts. That's why no specific announcement that this was an April Fool was made.

One of the cycled adverts is "And the Winner of the April Fool's Joke Competition is..." (I'm paraphrasing from memory I'm afraid). If you click on that it brings you to this thread. AFAIK the advert has been there since the 2nd.

So if this was just an expertly orchestrated April fool, what's the deal with the Amiga.org Domain expiration date of 27th April??? :-?

A Natural expiration date, noting the original creation date of April 27, 1995 which simply played into our hands.

In all, I can't take credit for everything.  I owe most of the original inspiration to James Russell, our Editor-at-large.  Glad everyone liked it.

Our original plan was to drag it out until May 1st at which point we would have announced it (if no one had seen the hidden text by then) but the other moderators on the site (who were intentionally not let in on the joke) started kavetching about how "foolish it makes them look" and how it was "damaging the site's credibility", etcetera ad nauseum (literally).  Sheesh, no sense of humor I tell ya... :)

Just wait to see what we have in store for next year...
