Title: New Netscape Browser?
Post by: JamesR on March 31, 2004, 08:46:29 PM
Mozillazine.org reported today on a couple sources that have indicated that AOL has decided to release a new version of the Netscape browser likely based on Mozilla 1.7 (it had been pretty much taken for granted that Netscape 7.1 would be the last of the Netscape browser releases).

Read the article. (http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=4544#27)

Perhaps the AmiZilla (http://www.discreetfx.com/AmiZilla.html) project (which has a booty of over $8700 now) can eventually get a Netscape-branded browser on the Amiga yet!

Hmm...? Why would Netscape be more likely to be ported to Amiga than Mozilla? $8700 is really not a lot of money when it comes to licencing this kind of thing...and even if Netscape accepted it, they'd just give you access to the source. Back to square one.

I find this very odd.

AOL give Mozilla to the community, sign up with MS to have IE as the default browser, then ask for a new version of Netscape?

AOL's logic is not clear to me on this.  I had thought that they had given up on Netscape.  Besides if someone wants to use that technology they should go download and use Mozilla or Firefox (which is my favorite  :-D )

Wierd :-?

Having "spun off" Mozilla, they're free of any contractual obligations to pay for the actual development of Mozilla itself.

As such, like anyone else, they can take Mozilla at zero cost, slap on a few bits to it (apparently there's a small community of Netscape diehards who can't live without the AIM and Netscape.com webmail integration), and have a no-brainer product.

They have no need to "market" it (not that AOLTW  were doing much better than CBM prior), but it'll keep the ad revenue from drying up on all the portal-cancers they've grown.

(Chances are they also noticed they had some sort of semi-profitable Netscape license still going with some slow-moving institution... And/or that slow-moving institutions still standardized on "Netscape" are captive audiences for the ads and portal sludge.)

I was actually glad to see Netscape die.  Dammit, AOL!

The article was posted yesterday.  Someone is a very bad man if they posted an April Fool's yesterday.

If Mozilla is ported, Netscape is ported. I was just saying that if no new versions of Netscape were to be released, it would be impossible to finally get "Netscape" on Amiga. Mozilla's the same thing, true, but for years Amiga users have wanted to use "Netscape" and now that we know there will be new versions of Netscape, it's again a possibility.
