i guess 31GB must have seemed huge a few years ago, information taken from this site www.ftp-sites.org (http://www.ftp-sites.org)
ftp://ftp.amigascne.org/
* Total file number: 170,821
* Total file size: 31.12 GB
* System: UNIX Type: L8
* Directories in /pub/: amiga/, unix/
* Mirror directories: de.aminet.net/

Easily explained by the relative small size of the Amiga's software compared to current day Linux or Windows applications.
I keep wondering how programs so small can be so capable. Mind you, I'm not only talking about Amiga-software, but about older computers in general (all 8 bits machines, but also the Amiga and the Atari ST).

Wow, no kidding, it would all fit on a modern hard-drive now! :-o
-
YeeeHaaa! Time to download Aminet!
-
I don't think the whole of Aminet is that small. There are gigs and gigs of bland trance mp3s on it, though. Take off all the trance and workbench screenshots, and Aminet might actually be tiny. :)

I love aminet.
Its a source of quality and fun.
Just look at those things
with my name on them. :)
-
:-o We have been corrupted by other OS file sizes, small indeed.
(Downloading Aminet - 14 days 19 hours and 22 minutes to go) ;-)
-
challenge:
somebody make a HDF Winuae partition with everything from Aminet installed.
-
hmmm, yeah :)
Aminet @ 31GB:
Hundreds of thausands of usefull programs...
Winnet (theortical Windows software repository) @ 31GB:
About 60 programs... ;-)
-
Errm...
Does ftp://ftp.amigascne.org/ also contain Aminet? The /pub/amiga directory seems to just have demoscene related stuff :-?
Or am I being stupid? :-D
-
I was just thinking that....I wonder what the size would be for a windows equivalent ?
310 GB?
3100 GB ?
-
Aminet a few years ago was the largest application archive of all computer platforms, now I can go at my uni that has a mirror of Aminet (unina.it http://it.aminet.net) and copy it in my hd (http://amiga.org/images/subject/icon19.gif)

It's only 7 or 8GB without the music, pictures etc.
I'm amazed at how big "modern" software is rather than how small old software is.
-
Huh? It's more like 20 Windows Games.
-
Lazy programming, out sourced programming, people don't have to program within constraints, people have to program for so many possible hardware types, higher level languages compile worse than assembly or c, crappier compilers, little bits and pieces added-on by windows, lots of graphics in high color counts and high resolution.
Take your pick.

Wow I had no idea it was so small. I may just have to download it all myself. I have well over 200Gb of free space in my PC I think.....
-
I have all 52 AminetCD's here... each around 650MB...
650MB x 52 = 33 GB...
remove the commercials and guides, search indexes etc. and add the new files since last Aminet CD... then 31GB is very realistic. :-)

"Only" 31GB. :-o
