Title: Announcing the Amiga.org SoapBox.
Post by: System on March 11, 2004, 08:24:59 PM
Different from the general forums, The Soapbox is an area of the site where the administrators and users alike can share well-written opinions and editorials with the other site's members in a permanently archived, professional fashion.

If you are a registered user, you can even submit your own articles for consideration by our staff. Please be aware that we will reserve the right to run it through a grammar and spell check, but will not alter the premise of your submission.

Check out the Soapbox (http://www.amiga.org/modules/soapbox)

Fixed.  You need to log in to post, comment or otherwise contribute, but reading is open to the public.

;-) I will be interested in watching this one develop.  There doesn't seem to be a link to it on the front page, or on the Forum page, yet.  Will posts made here be visible from the front page?

The link is definately there.  Located at the top bar right next to images and before adverts.  Later it will be added to the Main Menu section.  I can't add it to the Main Menu remotely, otherwise it would have been included in Other Places already.

Depending on the ratings of the posted article vs the number of votes, I'm sure some of them will be posted to the front page as news articles.  Or if the posting is extremely good, they will get to the front page without any votes.  We are working on a module that will display the best articles (say top 10 with a good rating to votes ratio with minimum number of votes) as well as the latest three or similar.  Don't know how it will work just yet but I love the module and will continue to expand on it as the site develops.  If you vote on an article, vote on the composition rather than the content even if you disagree with it.  If you have something good cooked up, post it when you have the chance.  The module is new and constantly expanding, so better features are slowly coming along.

SoapBox has been added to the side menu at the left.

Just a heads up.  As of this morning, I'm seeing several bugs with the Soapbox module that I will be asking the developer for help on.  The largest of which is that when you create a comment in reply to an editorial, it -- for some stupid reason -- turns off the flag for "allowing comments" to that editorial, making the comments disappear.  How weird...  I'm trying to stay on top of it.

ok.  found the bug that kept removing the commenting ability.

Anyone here want to help us populate the "Historically speaking" column?

@ltstanfo

Sorry I'm not a gun nut, all I know is I ripped off KennyR's avatar and animated it for fun.

I actually like cats, but originally I was gonna go the gorey route possibley anime style.

;-) Yeah, it's a Beretta.  It's difficult to be certain from the small image, but it seems to be Beretta's M-9 model.  (Or in it's civilian designation, the 92fs.)

Considering that no one has actually submitted anything, it's hard to tell.

;-) A while back, you made a thread in Talk-about in which you mentioned that freedom of speech didn't really exist anywhere, at least in the classic definition.

(this one. (http://www.amiga.org/forums/viewtopic.php?topic_id=14898&forum=1))

In my first reply on that thread, (message number 22, page 1, near the bottom) I lamented the state of education in America and England, and its effect on the writing seen on the Internet.

While I doubt that the negative tone and flavor are what you want for every article in the Soapbox, I suspect that the quality of the work is about on a par with what one would reasonably expect from a column created by the site's rank and file members.

:-? Is that assessment about right?  Would a posting like that be about what you're looking for?
