Eight years ago, PC's were boring beige business boxes, and many computing enthusiasts got their kicks out of funny little "home computers", generally one-piece systems hooked up to televisions or cheap monitors, from companies like Atari and Acorn. The king of 'em all was a colorful little computer from Commodore called the Amiga. With a custom chipset at its core and a Unix-like multitasking OS, the Amiga delivered stereo sound, smooth animation, and high-color displays.

It was, we Amiga faithful were convinced, poised to take over the world.

In the fall of 1992, I was studying abroad in Oxford, England, and I had the chance to attend London's big Amiga trade show. Commodore was finally set to unveil the first major revision to the Amiga's custom chips. By then, Macs and PCs were catching up to the Amiga's graphics, and game consoles threatened to eat away at sales. Nevertheless, enthusiasm was high...

I remember when I went to my first amiga convention in New York - it was like an ephany!
it was in the late 80's and I finally saw a computer that could be used to make art!
I was sold from that moment on!
and I've never regretted one minute!

Nice article, I think I've read it before.

Anyways some people just can't live the nostalgia, trolling and blind evangelism abound in the comments section....*sigh* :-(

On a brighter note, I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on a Desktop A1200HD at the weekend, it's gonna be fun :-D

I won a couple of bids on eBay yesterday, so I'll have an A600 and a CD32 winging their way to me soon :-)
Can't wait to get the CD32 hooked up to my TV for some classic Chaos Engine action!

From this day forward, I still like to see the Amiga move on with newer OS versions and hardware.  Unfortunately I'm going to miss their custom hardware chips, but I rather not be enslaved by that Bill Gates crap he's still promoting and dominating.  So, there! :-P

I found a box full of old Amiga Formats, CU Amigas, Amiga Powers and The One Amigas. Many hours later, I was sitting on the sofa flicking through the February 1994 issue of AF when a thought occured...
"Where did it all go wrong?"
Here was an issue showing some great games, not to mention one of the best pieces of software ever to grace ANY platform (I speak of Lightwave), and within a couple of years the downhill gradient had become a cliff :-(
