The NEWS that a new worm that propagates on Windows machines is spreading-
From The Washington Post, courtesy of Yahoo! News (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1804&ncid=738&e=6&u=/washpost/20040119/tc_washpost/a29926_2004jan19) comes this warning of a worm, called "Bagle" or "Beagle", that arrives as an email attachment (.exe file) to an "e-mail with the subject line "Hi" and "test : )" in the body text".
Bagle has spread to computers in more than 100 countries, according to MessageLabs, an e-mail security company in New York City. Bagle also tries to download an unknown program from one of more than 30 Web sites located mostly in Germany and Russia. . . . . indications are that as many as a million computers have been infected so far.

What I find funny, Lempkee, is that there are ACTUALLY people who run executables from people the don't know???
I got this and all it said was 'Test' with a smiley face. It had some gibberish text after than and then said 'this is a test'. What kind of moron do they take me for? Straight to the trash can it went. :-?

Actually, I think it would be much cooler to do the entrepreneur thing and develop serverside virus/worm scanning software. And then use the millions of $$$ you rake in servicing the ISPs of the world to sponsor software development for your favourite platform. :-D
First of all, .EXE's (or any executable/script) should not sent through email from the ISPs server to the users personal email box, only text with suitable attachments. 8-)

You'd have to sell at least 6 PCs to buy an AmigaOne :-D :-D :-D

darthx: sure i didnt say its easy and cheap to get an amigaone , but people do get FED UP with virus's and trjoans, i am sure there is like only 1% of every normal user on pc who doesnt know what ANTI-SPAM is even..
i know of people who read every spam mail they get....really lame :)
the kitty with the gun:(HEHE) yeah its funny but then again pc is so "normalized" atm that people who never should have had a computer has one, thats just like with cars :) , there is alot of people who shouldnt have one :) or a liscense even :)

Keep in mind that there are some virus and/or trojan programs out there that don't even have to be opened on the PC in order to do their damage. Simply viewing the message in a preview pane is enough to activate them.
Again, I place the blame for these virus and trojan problems in the majority of the world squarely on BOTH the writers of said programs and Microsoft. If M$ didn't have so much bloat crammed into their software, which leads to all sorts of holes not to mention it being slower then heck, huge amounts of the things that virus and trojan programs try to do wouldn't even be possible.
That's one of the main reasons why I like running my Amigas. "Security through obscurity!"

Not to worry. That's what my Amithlon box is for. ;^) One click of a monitor swtich and I'm on my 'Miggy'. Sadly, I got Amithlon for the 'cheapness' of having a decent amiga system again, but not having to pay for an A1200 with an 040 and decent ram. I'm still stuck using WinUAE for my old games, though, 'cos I can't get the Amiga version to really work at all. =^\
hmm....maybe I should have bought another 1200.... :-(

What I don't understand is why this virus has hit the headlines, there's nothing remarkable about it at all...

Keep in mind that there are some virus and/or trojan programs out there that don't even have to be opened on the PC in order to do their damage. Simply viewing the message in a preview pane is enough to activate them.
Solution: don't use an email program that uses the IE engine to display HTML mail.
Outlook Express and IE are very insecure.. I really hate running ad aware on family members' boxes, since they're always running a load of malware that IE allows to be installed without even notifying the user.
I like IE but I'm forced to use Moz Firebird on Windows boxen.. I just don't want the hassle of malware any more.

The media likes to attempt to keep our minds confined to simple thoughtless issues, so that we never see the BIG picture, and never aspire for more than what they feed us.
Aside of this, I often wonder how the masses seem to still find scripted sit coms and the so called reality shows entertaining. I mean, COME ON, that crap is totally predictable, you already know what will is going to say to grace, like...
...you expect 10,00 winblows trojans and worms to be written every year.
dumb dumb dumb down society, keep us paranoid and simple, ready to give up rights that we never knew we had. :/

Agreed - also its "exploiting" the standard Win User practise of clicking on .EXE Attachments in E-mails without taking heed!
Its like how putting a WET PAINT sign on something guarantees the truth of THAT statement will be tested!
The NEWS Site cautioned that the next version may by-pass that particular (operator action) practise?

That's funny.
The prevalence of viruses on Windows boxes is down to the popularity of the OS and not AmigaOS's amazing security features. If the Amiga ever does become popular again, an awful lot of self-satisfied, smug and complacent Amiga users are going to get stung when their machine becomes the target for worms and viruses.
I would use an Amiga for the internet, but then again why would I want to pay good money for a web browser that can't even cut and paste properly?!

Yup, I got caught by a bit of a java applet that could overwrite my IE settings in the Windows Registry. Little such-and-such would redirect my homepage to porn sites and similar. And I have a very up-to-date virus checker, and it's firewalled away to be damned too :-D Seems you're just not safe...
