Leuven, Belgium. - December 25, 2003
Hyperion Entertainment and the OS 4.0 development team are pleased to announce that OS4 development has now sufficiently advanced for a comprehensive Developer Pre-release of Amiga OS 4.0 to be distributed to all current AmigaOne owners shortly after the New Year.
In view of the fact that quite a few of you reminded us that you do not have broadband internet access, the original idea to offer an initial version of OS 4.0 for download was abandoned in favor of an "easy to install", self-contained distribution on CD.
Whilst this will obviously entail more cost to Hyperion and require more time for duplication and distribution, the upside is that we will be able to provide developers with everything they need to start developing for OS 4.0.
The developer material will include sample source-code, an initial version of the AmigaOS 4.0 SDK as well as native OS 4.0 compilers (GCC 2.95.3, GCC 3.4 and VBCC) and cross-compilers for various platforms (Linux x86/PCC, Mac OS X etc.).
The Developer Pre-release will require an upgrade of the AmigaOne firmware which was bumped from U-Boot 0.1.1 to U-Boot 1.0 and which is currently undergoing final testing.
Further details will be announced shortly.
Hyperion Entertainment and the OS 4 development team would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your continued support and patience.
The fact that you are still here, 10 years after the demise of Commodore, has been a tremendous encouragement to us during these 2 years of laborious development.
Make no mistake: your patience will finally be rewarded with the fastest and most powerful incarnation of AmigaOS ever.
Merry X-mas and a prosperous 2004 to all of you!

Good news for us amiga1 users. :-) :-) :-)
-
Huzzah! I can't wait!

Hopefully this question will be answered soon: If I'm not a "current" AmigaOne owner, is it too late to buy an AmigaOne and purchase the pre-release CD?

I think that you can order now or very soon an AmigaOne from a reseller and have the EarlyBird offert. A1 already produced and in stores have the EarlyBird offert (OS4 beta+OS4 when finished).

YEAH!!! d:^)
That announcement must be the best christmas present ever....!
Now I just hope that us mortal CyberStormPPC users soon will get AOS4.

Good news for the A1 owners! Finally! :-)
I congratulate you to your decision to send out CD's instead of a download only solution.
Just out of curiousity, will there be a download option as well, and will the ROM image be included on the CD together with the flashing tools, or will they be distributed separately?
Make no mistake: your patience will finally be rewarded with the fastest and most powerful incarnation of AmigaOS ever.
Bold statements! ;-)
I guess we will be able to compare different option side by side at the very next public show (when is the first show in 2004 scheduled? Could it be AmiGBG the 17:th of April?). That will be interesting! :-)
Anyway, congratulations to you at Hyperion. It seems that the results of your hard work will finally have its baptism of fire! :-)

Great news!
As a non-A1 owner, I am still interested in the AOS4 SDK. I wouldn't mind taking a look at any documentation to get a peek at what's new under the hood. Is it possible for non-A1 owners to get ahold of this???

Simply fantastic!
I have been waiting a long time for this. :-)
Now I can finally start making use of my AmigaOne and start programming for it.
-
This is brilliant news!
Thanks Hyperion.
I look forward to guidance as to how to upgrade my UBoot as I haven't yet (Had it since June 2003).
Personally, I'm looking forward to playing with Dockies. Has ANYONE created any Dockies yet? Volume controls, online controls, babel fish like plugins, download progress meters, mouse distance-o-meters, weather forcasters, lemmings start & exit doors with lemmings walking in/about/then back out again, trashcan drag n drop plugins, YAM e-mail notifications plugins, emulators in a Dockie (Speccy, UAE, MAME), calculator, a paint pot in a Dockie that you can knock over with your mouse & smear across workbench? ? ? Anything?
Just wondered since I haven't seen any Dockies announced.
FuZion.

. . . a comprehensive Developer Pre-release of Amiga OS 4.0 to be distributed to all current AmigaOne owners shortly after the New Year.
Those were the important points that (it seems) some missed!
In honour of this auspicious event -- I have changed my avatat! 2004 is the year of the regeneration!

Firstly, congrats and thanx to Hyperion.
I trust this will be made available as a free download; it is in the interests of Hyperion and of the Amiga community in general that the maximum number of developers are given the opportunity to code applications for OS4.
Apparently the ROM Kernal Manuals are being rewritten/updated to cover OS4.0, does anyone know if these will be included in the beta 4.0 NDK? (These would presumably be useful for OS3.9 programmers like myself, as they would presumably cover (for the first time) OS3.x technologies such as ReAction, datatypes, NSDs, etc. Or a list of what else will be included, for that matter?
I notice that cross-development systems for MacOS X, etc. are provided, is a cross-development system to run on OS3.9 also provided?

>I notice that cross-development systems for >MacOS X, etc. are provided, is a cross->development system to run on OS3.9 also >provided?
Cross-Compilers exist for:
- AmigaOS 3.x
- LinuxPPC
- Linux-x86
- Windows
- Mac OS X
- I think also some Unix-dialects, not sure about that
right now
And of course a native OS 4 compiler :)
